  1. Leave The World Behind stars Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke. I was initially drawn in by the trailer. The actress who plays the daughter in one of two families was genuine and the beach scene was intriguing. I didn’t know whether it would be an M Night Shyamalan type film or something more of a mystery / suspense. Most of the main characters are either likable and interesting or annoying cliches. Then there is Julia Roberts who manages to be dislikable and annoying as an angry bitch. An actor can plausibly portray a rotten character you dislike yet you don’t feel they are so grating you want to fast-forward the stream to skip their screen time. I did fast-forward some of Julia Roberts. She is such a bitch I didn’t buy the moments when she eventually softened and was to display redeeming qualities so she might be forgiven. Also, it was a lot to chew in one mouthful when in those same scenes which she shows a softer side she also is interested in cheating on her husband and in the process betraying her children. Those moments were failures and instead enforced how full of herself she was. In part it was the way the character was written but I also see this as a weakness in the acting ability of Roberts. The story was interesting enough maintaining the question of whether this was paranormal or mundane close to the end. There are two families. The actresses playing the daughter in each family were excellent. I mentioned one actress but the daughter in the second family is especially effective calling out everyone perfectly understanding their motivations and behavior. She shared the insightful perception with Julia Roberts’s character but her character was grounded and mentally heathy. Her character’s presence made everything bearable enough to see the film through. It was refreshing in contrast to Roberts and when the cliche characters were so lame. There is enough here that this could have been great with some adjustments. There is evidence of a formula in the story. This is a case where they could have exploited the strengths and sured up the weaknesses along the way had they only comprehended the opportunity. But it appears they committed some aspects to cliche from the start and did not adequately reassess the project as it proceeded. Two adjustments would have made a big difference: dial Roberts back and give the son and Hawke characters the strength to consistently take action on empathy.
  2. Curious, what happens when the stage lighting is blue?
  3. They are not different in every aspect. For instance, movement can be conveyed in music, actual physical motion, in stagnant form, literature, a still image / picture as well as in a motion picture. The performance / parts concept applies to creating something which flows. A part tends to have a start and an ending (a rough transition) when it is not desired and/or presenting undesirable consequences / artifacts. My example in the Wick films shows how even with the preparation involved as you described the results are similar to thinking "parts" when "performances" would serve the objective better. By the way there are coinciding preparations when creating parts and performances as well. The existence of these preparations do not prevent rough transitions or guarantee smooth transitions. There was a film with Anne Bancroft and Shirley MacLaine called The Turning Point. There is a scene which called for one to shock the other by flinging a beverage in the face of the other. In order to get the most plausible effect they did not inform the victim what was to take place. Ultimately they got their shocking reaction as a drink was flung in the face. Imagine how difficult it would be to remain unflinching knowing a drink was about to be tossed in your face. One is approaching it as a "part" the other is approaching it as a "performance." There was no opportunity to anticipate and begin when they did not know what was coming. Thus they probably avoided having to do multiple takes, (parts), by filming it as a performance. The scene flowed naturally with its action and reaction. I hope this makes sense.
  4. The second one had my heart pumping. Something I thought was really cool, the two Matrix sisters formerly brothers did not ask L Fishburn back for the recent Matrix film. I didn't notice his name in the credits other than as an actor but I suspect Reeves is a producer in the Wick franchise. I like how he made Fishburn a key figure in Wick chapter 3.
  5. In an alter-universe, I read you were looking forward to the next John Wick chapter. I ended up watching the first three this past few days. They are better films than I anticipated. How this fits here is in one of the sequels there is a series of scenes. They were clearly shot as parts and would have benefitted from being shot as performances. The shots are of a single different bad guy security guard walking his route then he gets jumped by invaders. There are three identical scenes back to back each sharing similar pace and activity arcs. The biggest flaw is that the bad guy seems to know when he is going to get jumped. He should have looked like he would have continued his rounds if not jumped of course. This also happens with brush painting of pictures in fine art and probably sometimes painting walls of buildings. The stroke of the brush ideally continues off the canvas instead of stopping at the edge. This, so the illusion of a scene or in the case of a building wall the surface edge is not distinguished by the character if the brush mark. The canvas or wall should not be emphasized unless it is intentionally to be part of the effect. Hope this makes sense.
  6. Saving mode can feel good but the rate is increasing at which prices are going up so things are more expensive month by month and it takes a lot more when you do spend. Consequently, the good feeling comes more from knowing you might have or would have spent instead of seeing a nest egg grow.
  7. Regarding both having two cases of VD, they both also have two cases of Tone. Just in case you really don't see it, the top knobs are V D and V D. The bottom knobs are Tone and Tone. The pedal is "TWO overdrive pedals in one box." This info applies to the real one.
  8. Funny, I tried to make a post here and quoted someone's existing post. The forum software would not allow me to submit the post because it contained words not allowed. Yet those words were within the quoted text that already exists in this thread. In fact one of those words is in the title of the thread.
  9. Sorry OT: I was thinking of Free The Tone and thought you were posting about Matt Schofeld, (at least pre-Covid on his SVL guitars. I am not a fan of the Fender Strat he is using currently. It seems to color his signature Two Rock even though John Mayer plays a Strat through his own signature Two Rock. However I think Mayer's Strat tone sounds smaller and toy-like for lack of a better way to describe it.). So Surfergirl this pedal gets along with the amp you use?
  10. Donald Fagen must be an idiot savant. He has created some respected music, like it or not. He supposedly made a big deal out of John Lennon suggesting people do away with everything when the song's title "Imagine" is repeated throughout the song.
  11. @analogika do you remember these details? Are you using references to get the history in properly?
  12. How about a synth that can turn into a pizza? Beck had a guitar synthesizer melt on stage in South America during the Blow By Blow era speaking of blow.
  13. Forever I have wondered how one distinguishes themselves as an oboe player.
  14. I had a friend who took up his father's trade buying out the father then branching out starting other machine shops. He recruited a senior machinist from the father's competition. One day he got a call from someone inquiring about this machinist. Turned out he was a world renowned and sought after oboe player. He hated the musician's union so much he had abandoned a career as an accomplished orchestral oboe player and chose to work in a machine shop.
  15. "Neon blue burrito" :-)) I have yet to see the Avatar films. I saw references to Dances With Wolves and although I enjoyed DWW I don't care to see it again in any other package. I have been curious about the 3D but not enough to make a theater viewing of an Avatar. I have passed on seeing it streamed. Speaking of cerebral, did you happen to see Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line? The general public likes meat and potatoes served one way. Sometimes they will accept something different and then that becomes the new thing, for a while at least. Not saying it compares in depth but I saw a lot going on that wasn't spelled out in Meet Joe Black. Ironically, I felt sympathetic towards Pitt's character. Maybe he played it too human? That can work both ways. Back when Kevin Costner played Robin Hood, the character of Sheriff of Nottingham was the one I was rooting for because Alan Rickman portrayed him so richly. I suspect the studio test screenings, subsequent reviews and viewer comments might have reflected the same sentiments. It was a disappointing follow-up for Costner and DWW fans. I will avoid Rebel Moon (TY DB).
  16. Here are some ideas: Watch videos of famous old timers like Michael McDonald, Richard Wright and Elton John. Notice how they look and don't look. Practice relaxing and imagine you look like them instead of you. Really feel it throughout your face, eyes and mouth. If this doesn't work wear a hat which casts your face in shadow.
  17. The tech could improve beyond the pessimistic outlook. One day they might design a perfect storm and come up with an AI entertainer which is essentially an every popular trait soup.
  18. Another effectively used to pull you in by Don Henley is the opening bass synth of Dirty Laundry. Similar effect is the anticipation created at the beginning of In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins.
  19. The creators would be wise to keep that a secret as long as possible if AI musicians exist. Give the AI a chance to become a hit. Once there, then reveal the true identity or don't. It would be the kiss of death to announce that a brand new artist is entirely AI. Guaranteed, too many people would reject it outright whether it is good music or not. The day is coming when this plays out. Perhaps it will take at least one generation growing up while competitive AI music coexists. People will eventually accept it. Also, there will always be people who don't.
  20. I just learned the great actor Tom Wilkinson passed away December 30, 2023. As a fan of good cinema I count Tom Wilkinson as one of the top five greatest actors to have lived. Although I never saw a film just because he was in it, I trusted I would enjoy the film when I discovered he was in it. My favorite film with Tom Wilkinson is Michael Clayton. It is filled with great performances but in my opinion Wilkinson's is the character every performance revolves around. Other Wilkinson films to recommend are Sense and Sensibility, Girl With a Pearl Earring, In The Bedroom and Shakespeare In Love. I was unaware of Wilkinson's passing at the time but I re-watched Sea of Love with Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin that day. An interesting thing about Al Pacino, he can look the same and speak with the same voice in various roles yet he manages to be plausible as a different character. Pacino and Barkin have great chemistry together on screen. I think this may have been the first time I saw this much of John Goodman. He is a one size fits all actor. He typically does "John Goodman." I appreciated the freshness of his performance given his youth and relative inexperience. I looked on IMDB and I must have seen him in The Paper Chase (highly recommend this too). I don't recall him and which character he played but he might have been the guy with the huge thesis that blew out the window when they were studying for finals.
  21. I like some of the early modular synth sounds, usually the bassier ones. In the early days this sound was frequently used in a way that tended to blend into a less prominent sound space. They might have used cellos without the synth but they used a distinctly synthesizer sound. It was not meant to be mistaken as a traditional instrument. By doing this they gained all of the richness of a synthesizer sound. No one uses a synth with that sound in that manner anymore. An example is what is on Elton John's All The Girls Love Alice. Another is on The Beatles' Abbey Road, Here Comes The Sun The way the Moog is used on Here Comes The Sun replaces a few traditional orchestral instruments. They found sounds that were useful but not intended to fool people. If they thought a flute fit somewhere they used the one that sounded flutish. Sometimes they sound like strings or flutes but they only resemble and do not suggest a budget-friendly alternative as synths were frequently used later on. I re-listened to these on YT before making this post. Of course the sound quality is lacking. In the early 80's I acquired a special copy of Abbey Road. It was vinyl. This was just before CD's hit. I cannot remember what it was. I know it wasn't a Japanese import pressing. I also had a high quality audiophile system at the time. The individual elements of this copy were distinct. The Moog on Here Comes The Sun was more prominent and sounded like it was in the room. I remember the first time I listened to that song in this quality format on this quality system. Hearing that bassy synth come in was a great moment I have not forgotten.
  22. I imagine the promoters are referencing Winterland, corner of Post Street and Steiner Street San Francisco, California USA before it was closed New Years Eve 1978. The real The Grateful Dead played the final concert that night for 6 hours into 1979.
  23. There is Teleprompter You guys probably already considered things like Keynote and Powerpoint but I did not see them mentioned so here they are mentioned. Best Teleprompter Apps for iPad How To Use Your Mac Device As A Teleprompter
  24. Some very funny comedians are serious hard workers about it. Steve Martin and Michael Caine appeared in a film together, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Public perception of Caine and Martin is opposite of their personalities off screen. Martin is serious while Caine has everyone laughing. Like Laurel & Hardy, the brunt of their jokes and seemingly weaker of the team Tom and Stan were the ones coming up with the skits. The Smothers brothers were locals. Attended college just over the hill and had a winery for 39 years up the road. Tom Smothers had a lovable stage persona. The Smothers Brothers had announced a post-retirement comedy tour to take place in 2023. That would have been something to see. We all need to be able to laugh faced with today's politics.
