Sometimes a tiny sequenced production of a portion of a song can make a huge difference to the setlist. I don't like the risk of tap tempo for cover band gigs but even without tap tempo, sequencing can work well. If the drummer's time is reasonably consistent, you can trigger four bars at the original bpm, then trigger the next four, then the next. Everybody aligns as the sequence runs. No sweat.

This technique also works with an arpeggiator as well.  As you mention, the drummer needs to have good meter-

Eric thanks for your thoughtful response! I haven’t spent much time on the Stage 3 at all, though after reading your post I did look up some videos on the A-B panel button. So, basically, you have two sets of front panel settings per Program. Lots of Arturia plug-ins have this as well. From what you and MathOfInsects say it seems like this is the first Stage (or any Nord?) to address the section level and the part-within-a-section level from the same panel, without having to flip from one mode to another.

Math, I feel ya on the split points thing. I mean, there are enough of them that I can more than manage, but for a pro instrument at this price point, players should be able to choose something besides a B/C or E/F split if they want.

    Hi, Steven-

This new architecture was introduced in the Nord Wave 2 minus the Piano and Organ sections-

  3. Here in Vegas, many of the bands use tracks for keys, vocals, etc.  I am an old-school entertainer, I would never play in a band that uses tracks.  You are locked into a specific arrangement and improvisation is virtually impossible.  You do what you can with the instruments you have and make the songs your own.  As long as the signature parts  are there, all is good. Something even more annoying to me is pop/rock bands who play with iPads or music stands.  Everything should be memorized, you cannot play to the audience if you are looking at a sheet for chords or lyrics.  Just my two cents-

  4. I have seen Fellini Satyricon, My Dinner with Andre, and Blow Up, all excellent.  My pick would be a pretty obscure Kubrick film called Barry Lyndon.  It is a kind of period black comedy/farce.  Extremely funny, sarcastic and probably the most beautifully filmed movie I have ever seen. Kubrick had special lenses developed by Zeiss so that the entire film was shot in all natural light.  There are indoor scenes using candles and moonlight scene that is out of this world. I recommend highly-

  5. My experience was similar.  I subscribed to Keyboard in 1984 and kept the subscription until EM gobbled it up.  I kept that for a year and then cancelled for all of the reasons stated.  Keyboard was unique and really packed with information, reviews being my favorite.  I actually would love to see a magazine that was similar to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, nothing but objective gear reviews, no advertising at all.  Need a good mailing list and a bunch of cash to send out the first issue. Based on the response to that,  it may or may not succeed, but buying all the gear to review would be tax-deductible.

  6. My Pool forum (forums.azbilliards.com) allows voluntary contributions for $35 a year.  You receive added benefits and a banner next to your profile showing that you support the site.  I don't know how much yearly revenue you need, but even if you got 10% of the users to contribute, that might be substantial enough to not employ ads-

Has anyone tried the keyboards of the Nord Stage 4 88 vs Nord Piano 5 ? According to Piano Man Chuck, he advised that the Nord Piano 5 was more piano like in action since the Stage 4 needs to cover double duties with Organ and Synth work. I ask this because the organ sounds in the Nords are usually looked on as close to being the best, but not quite as good as dedicated B3 Clones. So if running Organ from another module or keyboard, it would not be necessary to purchase the Stage outside of the All-In-One convenience of layering and stacking sounds along with the new 3 instances of the synth engine on the Stage.

I was also wondering if anyone here thinks that the Stage 5 synth is superior or on par with dedicated synth keyboards like the Summit or ASM Hydrasynth? I know it's a little early to ask these questions, but was hoping that someone would have auditioned in a store that had them.

I did have a Nord Stage 3 C that I was playing from a Roland 88-Key Midi Controller, so was wondering if the feel is significantly better or worse also.

    Warm Regards,

        Anthony

I can assure you that the synth in the Piano 5 is just a sample playback unit with limited controls and not comparable at all to any dedicated synth.  Your Stage 3 has an actual synth engine, which is already much more powerful than the sample player in the Piano 5 or Electro series.

This!   I have been in rock bands since I was 12 and never have used cheat sheets of any kind.  Lyrics, chords, changes all must be memorized.  It is really difficult to relate to and entertain an audience while looking back at an iPad for chords or lyrics.  I personally think it looks really unprofessional for a pop or rock band to have music stands, iPads, or any other kind of device other than your instruments.

  9. I think the most important change in the NS4 is the new Layer architecture taken from the Wave 2.  The also used the Effects per Layer and the Arpeggiator from the Wave 2.  This I believe is a transition that could lead to an even more flexible and modular design in the future where:

The Extern feature could be moved to the Piano or Organ layers instead of losing a synth.  I think most users need more synth rather than two pianos or two organs

An instrument that had 1 Piano, 1 Organ, 3 Synth and two dedicated Extern sections like the NS3.

A completely modular design where the customer could order the specific Layer configuration they needed.

Another couple of thoughts - I use the "flat" not angled arms on both tiers. Not sure one set of angled would be wise given the vertical play between top and bottom.

And as DJKeys above notes, forget about the K&M carry bag - flimsy and useless. I had a carry bag made of heavier material, and large enough to handle the stand with both arms (that won't totally retract into the pillar).

I bought a generic lighting equipment bag that was sturdy and padded.  It lasted 7 years until I sold the Baby Spider.
