You didn't turn off the "base" GSM functionality: phone calls and SMS.

Was it an iphone? Bet the bubbles were green...

From a weight/portability standpoint, it would make more sense to build that capability into the keyboard stand.

And I've done that with my stands. But it adds to the "long dimension" of the stand (i.e. its height) which makes it that much more cumbersome to transport. My keyboard stand fits between the wheel arches in my car, but add my "chicken wire" rear support tiers, and it has to fit behind them. Which is where my boards need to go, because of their length.

I'm hoping that "a board in a a deeper box containing only extra air" doesn't add too much to the overall weight. But I guess it depends on the construction material/technique.

I can see reducing length for carrying on your back, fitting across the back seat of a compact car, squeezing between the dresser and the door jamb.  But not having any controllers on the left does that.  So does offering a 76/73 variant - neither affects the ability to trigger notes across the playing surface of the keys.

+1. As I've said previously, I'd love to see a "deeper" 73/76 board with enough unused top-panel to allow me to rest an upstairs board there.

Ideally, the FOH would have to adjust for band volume and EQ -- and very little else.  I explain what we've done to our sound tech for the event, and they are always good with it.  Less work for them.

Chuck, do you hand FoH a pair of XLRs for house L/R and nothing else?

In other words, how much of the Key Largo magic is the Jensen transformers/DI, and how much is the rest of the mixing circuitry?

  6. Plenty of small mixers will do fine for submixing keys - but only the Key Largo has those magical Radial DIs built-in.

They missed out big-time by excluding a way of incorporating a monitor mix from the desk into the "local" outputs, but excluding it from the DIs. The KL8 fixed that, but it's a different product in a very different form factor.

I prefer the feeling of playing acoustic pianos on the SV2 over the SV1, but I am certain that has to do with how Korg calibrated the new piano patches for the RH3 vs. any changes they made to the action itself.

Interesting, I didn't particularly connect with RH3 action in either the SV1 or Grandstage, but that was for AP specifically.

I liked the CP88 action very much, but I'm happy with the GHS of the CP73, MODX8 and others, so - as others have mentioned - tastes vary.

So if there's no strings attached to both of you demo'ing each other's gear for sale, why not wait to ask the question of which you prefer until after you get to try it?

I would be straight with the other guy: "I'd be really grateful if you bring the CP, but please understand that I might not like it - just as you might not like my SL88"

  9. I don't understand all of this (I think "synth users who now some secret code or path..." is missing a verb), but I don't see synth manufacturers fundamentally introducing "slight errors" to upsell customers to more profitable alternatives. They might compromise specs (such as a cheaper DAC) to cut costs and hit a price point, driven by competition from other vendors, which is slightly different.

Fundamentally, sounding good is more about the player than the instrument.

    Cheers, Mike.

  10. I like the "swappable-battery-in-the-column" design of the Maui.

But I can't help feeling that piano and acoustic guitar have similar requirements for sound reproduction: "loud enough", clear, uncoloured, no super-deep bass. (Lots of 8in woofers used by forumites here). I would be tempted to get an acoustic-guitar amp with a second channel that can take a line-level signal for keys - something like the Fishman range.

Is battery power and column stand design important to you?

    Cheers, Mike.
