In guitar-based cover bands, I sometimes think the guitarists want the keyboardist to play a role similar to the sound guy: make the guitars sound good and otherwise stay the hell out of the way.

Well, that's not as bad as it sounds, provided it cuts both ways. Any musician's role in any band is to make *the whole band* sound good - and "staying out of the way"is a mark of a mature musician (particularly in riff-based songs - think Stones where the rests are as much part of the riff as the notes). In a typical keyboardless song (AC/DC, Weezer, Green Day, Blink 182...) I tend to be the Malcolm to guitar Angus in the verse, with my Wurlitzer. Chorus adds organ - but not too much.

Guitarists, on the other hand... they often dislike good drummers and bassists because they don't want to feel the groove.

Well... there are lots of guitarists out there, so you will always find a lot that fit any description. I've played with lots who love a solid groove (and contribute to one), and plenty for whom volume is the ultimate prize. And many others as well.

Hell, add a built-in clip or holder for the tablet while you're at it, or make a keyboard with a flat surface tilted towards the player and some way to affix the tablet.

Of course. Now you're cooking on gas!

I’d like to go back to a simple workstation to put together tracks to accompany myself solo or hopefully even better a duo or trio.  I tried with the MODX6 but it doesn’t go far enough.  I am pretty set studio-wise. It would most likely replace my Kurzweil SP6.

Sorry I'm late to this thread. Do you want to "put together tracks" in your studio and then use them to "accompany myself" live? If so I would recommend a separate keyboard and something like Logic on an iPad to playback the tracks. A large graphical screen for laying down and editing tracks will beat any workstation's built in sequencer.

Interesting.  Since the laptop or tablet is assuredly the sound engine for a controller like this we hear more often than not that players are content to use the onboard 3.5mm out and go to a DI box.  Or something like the Key Largo where they can mix USB audio and their hardware synths.

Yes, imo it makes more sense for a keyboard that makes its own sounds be able to act as an audio interface - that way you can have one set of outputs for both built-in and laptop or phone/tablet sounds.

If your device actually has a headphone socket, then you're fine. That limits you to laptops, and older tablets/phones. (It's why I bought a 2019 iPad Mini when the 2021 model was already available). But newer tablets/phones only have one connector, and that will be used for connecting to the keyboard controller. So a controller with a built-in audio interface makes sense for users of e.g. the latest iPads. Add USB Power Deliver to charge the tablet while it's connected for bonus points.

(Bluetooth MIDI is an alternative way for controllers to communicate with sound sources without occupying the connector).

Yeah but either cable is an easy find, in fact one probably already has several spare micro USB to Type A cables laying around, I know I do.  What I don't have is a micro USB to Type C, and perhaps that is what should be in the box, but most computers still have Type A ports (Apple often being one of the quickest to ditch ports outright).

Agreed - I'm more concerned about the durability of the micro connector.

    I soooo wish there was a ~23lb GHS keybed in a CK73

Since you'd be willing to go up to a 23 lb 73-key for something with a keyspan and feel you'd prefer, you might also look at a Kurzweil SP6-7, it's 17.53 lbs, 76 keys.

You want hammer action @danskeys? I'm with you - a CK73 with the 73 keys from the (presumably now discontinued) P121 and CP73/YC73 would be great.

Presets require digital control. So for example, the values of true analog potentiometers cannot be recalled digitally. So the only way to build a preset system for them would mean building a contraption that physically moves the knobs to the locations that yield those values.

I remember seeing a picture of something built this way, anyone remember what that was?

I did hear of a company that fitted rotary actuators that could rotate analog(ue) pots under digital control. They fitted them to classic preamps, EQ, compressors etc and offered a remote/cloud service where you could run your DAW project through their rig and your automation lanes would control their gear.

    Cheers, Mike.

  10. I would personally avoid anything with a TP/100 action. I tried the SL73 Studio a little while back and didn't like it. It was similar to the Electro 6 HP set up alongside, so I suspect it will be similar to your Stage.

I quite like the P121 action - it's way ahead of the SL in my view. Built-in audio interface is useful, but as you say no pitch/mod wheels. Add a little two-octave controller if you want those.

What's your budget? Could you stretch to the Studiologic Numa 73 - which has the updated TP/110 action (I haven't tried it but many reports are positive). Or even Yamaha's CP73?

    Cheers, Mike.
