Stage 2ex both 88 and compact 73- I've used the Ext for ipad/Mainstage, but didn't know it could echo prgr changes???  Can the Stage2??? That would be awesome.

Not exactly “echo”, but you can configure program X to send Program Change Y on its External sections when it is selected. So send PC X to your Nord, get PC Y out of it.

This does require you to configure all your programs in your Nord to send out corresponding program changes. It’s not simply an echo.

Oh, it was just the more 'fun' to play vs their other stuff. Def not a Nord fan but will use if a must.

Interesting. For me it was “just another pure-clonewheel” like many others out there. I feel the same about the Nord Piano, it’s just another stage piano. The Electro, Stage and Wave are more interesting because they’re less obviously comparable to other models from the competition.

Worst case scenario, hopefully we can assign one of the knobs or encoders to be the 9th drawbar - with the knobs below the touchscreen, that might be a possibility. Nowhere near as useful as an actual fader though.

Earlier Kurzweils assigned mod wheel to the 9th fader when running their organ model. I would tolerate this as a compromise, rather than being ideal.

Agreed, depending on the setup.  If you've got a few different controllers and/or sound modules that can use USB for both MIDI and power, then you can have just a single USB cable connected to each device and eliminate some power supples rather than one or two MIDI cables plus the power cable.

For example (since this is a Numa thread), the Numa Compact 2x can run off USB power and act as a second keyboard for organ/synth.  Also there are many controllers like the Crumar drawbar and pedal controllers, almost all keyboard/button/knob type controllers, and some synth modules like the Roland Boutiques that can run purely off USB.

Don't fall into the trap of "thing A has USB, thing B has USB, therefore I can connect them together to achieve something". Every USB interaction requires one thing to be a "device" and one to be a "host. You cannot play a Roland Boutique from a Numa via USB, as they are both USB devices (only). Some keyboards can act as a USB host (MODX, Fantom, Kronos, RD88, Mojo I think, a few others) - and that's priceless for alleviating the kind of problems I would run into using a ES120.

For 5-pin DIN, there seem to be a lot of interesting solutions now that let you connect multiple USB MIDI devices along with 5-pin DIN and even MIDI over ethernet. They also provide extensive routing/filtering/remapping capabilities if you need it.  For example https://www.iconnectivity.com/mioxm and https://www.bome.com/products/bomebox

There are, but if - like me - you simply want a lightweight hammer-action controller, it's a pain to carry an extra device, and connect it to both boards, and to power - never mind the additional expense. Compare that to a single MIDI cable.

That's a slippery slope. It's not politics, religion, etc... Things related to the playing of music, gear and so forth should be allowed, provided they don't involve ad hominem attacks or promote unethical/illegal behavior. Jim's entitled to his views here, which are largely accurate and do evoke concern. But in the end, everyone's opinion should be welcome - even ones that some might find too strongly worded.

I was struggling to find a sensitive way to articulate what brother Allan has succinctly expressed in this short paragraph. Thank you @allan_evett

This session was me consciously giving away parts that I can play well. To get better human balance between the two of us.

Your entire post is a masterclass in what we folks call "arranging". Superb.

I will be playing that bassline on [...] I Wish

As well as the main keyboard riff, and the synth lines in the intro, and the horns?

I'd expect it to have the ANX engine in addition to the FMX.

Would score highly on the cool-o-meter.

What else were Montage owners asking for?

YC's organ model is the obvious deficiency in the current Montage line-up.

    Probably 1,000 or under.

I like the Casio PX5S as a controller. Light, decent action (my opinion), six sliders and four knobs. No expression pedal or aftertouch though.

I would steer away from controllers with Fatar's TP100 action, but that's a subjective thing. Actions starting "TP4" are much better, but much heavier.

  10. Interesting topic. In a (pop/rock) band context I'll typically play with "one right hand" (LH does nothing) or "two right hands" (piano/organ or a similar split).  If I'm playing (say) an Elton John number which calls for a full LH+RH piano performance then @Docbop's advice applies. Roll off some bass EQ, or maybe don't wander so low down the keyboard.

Of course, on Elton-style material, bass is often playing roots low down, so even if you intersect with the bass player, you won't clash.

I played Queen "Don't Stop Me Now" on Saturday, another LH+RH example. The second bar of the pre-chorus (F7 chord) has the bass moving to a high Eb ("burning through the sky...") - and that's where you could get into trouble. I'd forgotten that change, but I instinctively eased off the LH volume and rose an octave to get out of the way.

  11. I admire anyone who tries to stretch the boundaries of their instrument. Just I admire guitarist who sets aside the hat  and the blues scale, and plays some fingerstyle arrangements of piano pieces (or harp, or whatever). I don't see Lachy's playing as an alternative to lead guitar, but rather as taking the clav further.

get the Nord Stage 4 HA73 - yes it's heavier at almost 37lbs - but as another commenter succinctly pointed out - the case alone with my NS2 was an extra 20lbs weighing in at a total of approx 60lbs.

Choose your case carefully. I have a NS2/76 hammer (that's got a proper hammer action, not the crappy HP action) which weighs 36lbs and I can lift it in a soft bag without wheels. A heavier case could get you back to where you started.

If I was designing a 73 note board it'd be from C-C! No contest, or from C to E, a 76 note board.  I wonder if most people are like me, they want and need those lower notes more than the highest.

Yeah, for a hammer-action downstairs board those lower notes are more useful. (Isn't C-E 77 notes?) I often find myself wanting that low D. However ...  I know that if I had a low D and C, I'd want the Bb. Perhaps an A-C 76-note board?

  14. K&M 18807: https://www.k-m.de/en/products/keyboard-stands/keyboard-tables/18807-universal-holder-black

I wanted something that will attach to my keyboard stand, and support my monitor speaker. I had previously mounted the speaker in front of me (behind my keyboards) but this obstructed line of sight between  me and the audience.

The K&M mounts at 45 degrees to my Stagg MXS-A3 stand and the build is of the usual robust quality you expect from K&M. Here it is supporting my Studiospares monitor. (The Laney wedge on the floor doesn't travel with me to gigs).

And here's the rig fully clothed and in all its jewel(le)ry: monitor arm, ipad holder, mic boom and a little doohickey to hang a tambourine (or IEMs).

The whole vibe of Purple Rain would have been different?

Funnily enough, in one of the bands I work with, we do a "West-of-England"-tinged bluegrass version of PR, and I dial up an accordion patch. Natch.

(If you're intrigued by what West Country-inflected bluegrass sounds like, search for famed "Scrumpy-and-Western" band The Wurzels. Just don't blame me if you're too weak to take it).

I use 2 keyboards (sometimes 3) for my live rig [...]  I have been looking at the Radial Key Largo which would work but it doesn't have a headphone out so I'm hesitant to purchase this unit.  I would need 2 main xlr outs as well.

So requirements are for 2-3 line inputs and a headphone out.

    - Do you need stereo inputs?

    - Do you need any mic inputs?

    - Do you need a foldback input for a monitor mix that does not get sent back to FoH? That's a critical requirement that not all equipment gets right.

    - Budget?

    Cheers, Mike.
