  1. For me the starting point depends on the sound. Sometimes I will tweak presets or my existing programs or combis and sometimes it is easiest to start with the default blank slate. I know some decent online videos on subtractive synthesis, but what is your rig?
  2. She passed away in 2022 at age 73. She unable to tour after 2012 due to medical reasons. I never knew much about her. I probably heard her on NPR and didn’t know it. It’s a shame she was great. Check out the piece on the other thread. Her speed lines are incredibly articulate. I love how she swings this Satie piece that many of us probably played growing up. I think I will find time to mess with Gymnopedie today.
  3. I met my wife in 4th grade. She is great. Playing was never a problem because when we were young we needed the money. It was never a ‘hobby’. Band Life and Family life is separate. Never had rehearsals in home. Never wanted the two worlds to mix. Met a few characters in music I don’t want near my family. My children are good musicians. They don’t want anything to do with gigging. Good for them. One is an engineer and the other an RN working on her DNP degree. If I had never played piano I might have amounted to something.
  4. 125-500hz. A lot of muddy nastiness to be found there.
  5. I think she is just a very articulate player and the piano has a responsive action. It doesn’t sound overly gated or weird to me. Thanks for posting. She is great.
  6. I have used a small EV sub but NOT for additional volume. If you want volume get a 2nd FRFR cab or figure out how not to need more volume. I used the sub on the sub out on the 3300. It gave me more low end than I ever needed. In hindsight I think the sub was counter productive. I don’t kick pedals or act as bass in an organ trio. It made the low end to efficient. Something I got from Goldy was to pull out the lower bars to get more breakup. Leslie breakup is a product of mashing the gas AND pulling drawbars. It was fun but I didn’t like it. The sub gave me too much bass …. Which is what it is supposed to do. Hell I don’t what I’m doing. I just try things.
  7. No. I think you are way more right than wrong.
  8. I like the way I use XK overdrive. My overdrive is either the Vents overdrive or from the cabinet. These days it’s practically the Vent all the time. But I use the XK OD to goose the real OD if I want to go full Uriah Heep.
  9. Play the SKx live. It is more portable than half of my XK-33c rig. (XK3c). If you want it to ride above an 88 then the big question is what to use as an upper tier. I use this and it works great. https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ZStd2Tier--on-stage-stands-ks7365-ej-pro-heavy-duty-folding-z-stand-with-2nd-tier Otherwise I setup in an L. The Mojo should work as well as the SKx.
  10. I'm with Max. I like the PC4 on slow stuff, mostly old standards and classical pieces. My favorite piano is #5 Recital Piano set to one of the Heavy Velocity curves (Heavy 1 or 2). The piano darkens and brightens nicely according to dynamics.... but it feels too slugish for the stuff I do on Blues and Honky Tonk gigs. When I set the Velocity curve to Light 2 the response is quick but the pianos becomes harsh for me. Maybe I just haven't got it figured out yet. I gig with curve Light 1 right now. It still is harsh if I get heavy handed. It's good enough to get the job done though and its like 28 pounds. My other stage piano is like 60 pounds.
  11. I guess I have played both then. I now do a guitar gig and the keyboardist’s plays a Forte 7. I have a PC4-88. The Forte is better action hands down. It reminds me of the top line Yamaha Balanced action. The PC4 has a great deal of adjustability. Every curve I’ve used comes with a trade off. I find it playable. I bought it due to board weight. You put in enough reps on the board you shouldn’t have any issues. Gear is overrated. I set the board depending on material.
  12. My Vintage suggestion wasn’t about nostalgia. It’s basis was getting something decent for $400-600. Most important thing is to start learning fundamental technique.
  13. Lessons and a synth with a good action. A used Triton would be cool. Fast crisp actions. Even a DX7. Lots of stuff will do.
  14. Dad thought Chet was the gold standard. Dad would comment on other players and say ‘they work too hard when playing, they need to relax like When Chet does it. ‘
  15. I am firmly in both: - Play it like the record camp - Make it your own camp There is a difference between making it your own and laming out because you won’t learn the part. … But you what you have to do to do the gig. Been there. Done that. 90% of the time if I make it my own it becomes more complex because … well I’m a big spaz that over plays too much.
  16. For playing solo, especially in the comfort of home … I love Ivory. The pianos are beautifully voiced. For playing in a loud cluttered mix I have no luck with it. Maybe if I did not specialize in playing loud shit it would work. Live I rather take my chances with Triple Strike.
  17. My favorite cover. Better groove and less spastic. … and it uses what sounds like the Shakuhachi patch on the D-50. This is the version I did when this version was current.
  18. They don’t suck. It’s what I use live but APs are not the strong point of the platform. FWIW I love the EPs.
  19. As far as I’m concerned … the strength of the Kronos are the synth engines. I have quite a bit of gear. The rig depends on the gig. I’m a fan of the Rev2 but I can usually cover everything I need with a F06 and Kronos 2.
  20. I don’t know anything about Conn Leslies so I didn’t post. I assume the pin layout may be unique. Captain Foldback may have a pin layout as a download. This may require a custom piece. Is WesG around?
  21. I’m curious and maybe this isn’t the right place. But… Am I the only guy that doesn’t worry much about form. If I have section charts then I’m usually good to go. It’s like I just feel the change when they happen, probably from the bassist if there is one. But I generally don’t think much when I play. I guess I’m just weird.
  22. FWIW - I used a pair of ZXA1s in a Country gig … probably around 2010-2013. We did a group of tunes where the bassist played acoustic guitar and I played LH bass. These were bass guitar and upright bass sounds. The EVs were great at this. I don’t think it is difficult for most any FRFR powered speaker to cover bass guitar sounds. Really fat synth bass is probably a very different story. PS - My cabs are solely for self monitoring and for stage sound only. They are wedges that don’t need to throw very far. Coupling with the floor as a wedge probably enhances the low end.
