  1. Well that is interesting and worthy of discussion. So you are saying.....the VR09 has the VK7 and not the VK8 sound engine....which probably includes the 760. This 760 I got has been an amazing discovery because ....trust me ....it holds its own and then some up against.....Crumar Mojo, Viscount Legend and HX3. I have module versions of all the above .The thing about the760 is Its Clarity.....and the fact that the Leslie sim interferes with the percussion a lot less than the Crumar and Viscount. The HX3 does not have the same level of quality of chorus vibrato as the other three . ..........................................................................................................................................................................  I may have to start a separate thread for VK8/ VK8m/ VR760. I am not sure that those who bitch about Roland have....for example spent much time at all with the VK8m in sim bypass mode. That is why I was hoping the. VR09 might be in that league. Are you sure the VR09 used VK7 engine?

  2. I don't know ....I am not sure that the VK7 is the same engine as the VK8 or the VR760. I have renewed interest in Roland clonewheels after picking up a 760 at a price almost too good to pass up.The 760 is very impressive .....I had a VK8m and I don't remember the Leslie sim sounding this good. The 760 seems to have Superior electronics or something.....also interesting is that all the keys play organ tones.  But there is the aggravating issue that it will not do upper and lower split...I just don't get it

  3. Hey ...I am still up for talking about the VR09 especially since I found out that the chorus vibrato warbly percussion issue was fixed a few years back. Hammond Suzuki people love to bitch about Roland clonewheels but I always liked the sound since the VK8. I recently heard a YouTube clip of Lonnie Jordan of War playing a VK8 and it NAILS his his classic sound of All Day Music etc. And if the VR09 really does have an organ engine equal to THAT I need to get my hands on one . I did get a VR760 recently but still cannot get a lower manual split ...........................but upper manual has really surprised me.....great CV and better Leslie sim than I remember from the VK8m I had. Is the VR09 in that league?

  4. I hate this !!!! I learned so much from Brazil '66....definitely recall hearing Mas Que Nada and really liking that they kicked the groove up a notch from the Ipanema days etc . Loved Lani Hall....it was so great that Herb Alpert gave us this. Such a neat intro to samba ....what a contribution.

  5. Jazz + also mentions Don Patterson's sound. I am also a big fan of Don Patterson.....just listen to his touch on cuts like Easy to Love with Sonny Stitt. I got to meet Pat Martino on a Joey D. rental and really picked his brain for anything he could tell me about Don Patterson. His memory was not entirely clear but he said Don was a true genius and was his favorite organist. It's so sad that Pat,Joey ,Dr Lonnie etc. are all gone now. I was so lucky to meet them through the rentals ,a lot of which happened through Tony Monaco and Sal Azzerelli...who is also gone.                                                                                                                                      I seems to me that Jazz+ is trying for a more shallow C/V sound similar to B-2 or C-2.On the Mojo I also turn percussion levels way down and almost always use slow decay at about 95. I hear Don Patterson using what sounds to me like slow percussion decay.                                                                                         I apologize for what might seem like too much name dropping but it was just such an experience to meet and work with some of these people. I just feel like I have to share it.

  6. I have the Mojo desktop....and also have several other modules including Viscount ...and HX3. I am  similar to Jazz +.....I do not use the Leslie sim and have never quite come to terms with it. I really do like the Mojo without Leslie sim.. instead I use  C3 chorus vibrato. The model organ I use on the Mojo is 1973 C-3....I have a very rare Hammond 1973 B-3 so I am used to the sound of a mylar cap tone generator. My B-3 was used as rental to Billy Preston ,Joey D., Dr Lonnie ,Tony Monaco and many others.                                                                                                                                                                                                         I especially got comments from Joey and Tony that it was rare to run into a late model Hammond without issues.Billy  Preston offered to buy it but he wanted to trade me a 1955/56 period B-3. He said he was looking for that sound of a later Hammond but that good ones are hard to find. Anyway ...the Mojo desktop really nails that sound and of all the clonewheels I have, the thing that helps make it sound authentic is the overdrive which is very natural sounding. Occasionally I regret not taking up Billy on his offer because I would imagine having Billy's instrument might bring monetary value ....but I guess I will never know.

  7. I got a Roland VR 760 and the owners manual is a nightmare! I am trying to get the split function to send information to an organ module and it doesn't come close to explaining how to do it even though several people in a previous post say it can be done. Their explanation doesn't make sense to me. Just because one person understands something doesn't mean they can make it clear....just look at about 10 YouTube music lessons.

  8. At least a few years ago when I mentioned liking Roland the haters were out in full force. One of them was a prominent Hammond Suzuki endorsee who even went so low as to suggest that I had some inadequate body parts.....there had been some discussion also that quite a few of us were not wild about Hammond Suzuki . Anyway maybe that is past.                                                                                                                 I haven't had opportunity to get my hands on the VR09 since I re discovered the Roland 760 but I hold out hope that the organ sample is the same as the 760.  Roland doesn't seem to be as serious as they were in the day of VK7 and VK8 etc.but I would have owned a VK8 back then if the keybed didn't double trigger. The 760 does not do this

  9. As far as "the rest" go ...I just picked up a Roland VR 760 and I am amazed at how good it really is. The chorus vibrato is comparable to both my Viscount and Mojo modules. But two things really surprised me. The first is the keybed but the killer is the Leslie simulation. This is not the same Leslie sim that I remember from years back on a VK8m module. This Leslie does not seem to affect the tone of the percussion....a big problem on one of the more popular clones. The only problem is that the VR 760 does not split upper and lower organ so I had to make a lower manual controller  There are a lot of Roland haters on this forum but I am liking this  Roland as much or more than anything I have tried.

  10.  Hey ...I am not supposed to say something like that about RICK BEATO am I ? Overkill is overkill....sports , music you name it. I haven't seen him at the Olympics but I imagine it has generated quite a bit of buzz....and kudos for being outlandish and this isn't  your grandfather's Olympics.

  11. Well...I finally resolved this to some degree. I am using a second manual hooked up to a Viscount module. This does give me the chance to quickly compare Viscount and Roland and set up two completely different sounds....for example the lower manual has Leslie sim on and the upper has a jazzy CV sound.

.I can't recall if I have ever had two different organs set up at the same time but it is kind of neat. I am running through a mixer which limits using expression pedal on lower.                                                                                                                                                                                                            I love the Roland but cannot understand not giving organ split capability. Who knows....I might end up playing two clones at once. Two organs opens up a lot of possibilities. I may pursue SRX cards to get some different EPs.....For now this is a lot of fun

  12. Scott to the rescue! Again....I have trouble navigating internet and online manuals because I am working with a tablet and hotspot from my phone. ,The manuals are a bit unstable and I can't just read them like a book. And once again it can be a bit difficult to comprehend....but I am noting which pages I need to reference.                                                                                                                                                                   But again.... how I got into all this.A super deal appeared in an ad....I sort of jumped on the opportunity to revisit Roland clonewheels. The other sounds are secondary to the organ.                                                                                                                                                                      Though the organ sound is great  but all of the other Rolands from this period have limitations

or other issues. VK8 had that weird double triggering thing....the keys tended to bounce and make multiple contact. This for some reason does not.I also am seeing that the Leslie sim in this may not be the same as the VK8m. Something is definitely different .I almost never see the ,730 locally but I am very curious about the VR09. They show up from time to time. The 760 organ sound is the one I am looking for how ever I have to get it

  13. I am thinking about starting a new topic that would cover Roland tonewheel organs and possibly other Roland keyboards. One of the aspects about posting about this 760 was that I was totally unaware of the expansion cards. I don't think that an expansion card is what I need based on some of the prices being asked but I might be interested in some of the electric piano options.                                                                                                                                                                                           I still am baffled about how to get to MIDI edit assign function as listed on page 70. Since I have been using mostly organ I really haven't gotten to all the pianos, synths etc. but it looks like I will be using a module for left hand split. Another possibility is using a Voce Micro B I have had forever.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    I want to particularly thank Scott and Elmer for hanging in with this. Another factor I have noticed about the VR 760:is it's CLARITY.Somebthing tells me that other companies might be cutting corners here. Also the Leslie sim does not affect the tonality of the percussion like some Sims. Also the percussion does not get louder like some other as I said..the 760 sim sounds like a different animal than the VK8m as I recall it...................anyway thank you for putting up with all this.

  14. To answer Elmer's question this is not a swiss army knife scenario. I am primarily interested in the 760 because of the organ sound engine....sample ,model whatever it is.  The VK8 from around this era had multiple triggering issues. The VK8m module will not give you Leslie sim bypass unless you get the unit modified. I was vaguely aware of the split issue but it's been awhile since I heard about it.                                                                                 And Thanks to Scott....I may have missed the page 70 reference  the first time. And yes I remembered the older VK8 having good keybed. So I was kind of looking for that. This unit showed up quite unexpectedly and at a low buy it now price. So I am trying to make it pan out.And also of interest ...this has 76 notes if organ ...which I have never seen before. I thought it would be good but I didn't think it would be this good. Killer chorus vibrato and better than you would expect Leslie sim

  15. Also....the lower manual audio could probably be run through a mixer....but having on audio source would also be nice of course. Having two sets of audio out would make it hard to gig but I could get by at home. I may want to transfer this thread to a general Roland organ discussion. Because of what I have discovered I strongly think that a lot of people could benefit from the awareness of how good the older Rolands really are. As I said....the ,760 holds its own next to Mojo Viscount HX3 etc.  for what I am looking for

  16. I am back now to finding out if I can trigger a midi organ module from the split section of this keyboard. I did listen to SRX card....not wild about it. I am looking at online manual but there isn't very much info....there is a step that is saying I am supposed to be seeing a UTILITY screen after pushing Edit button....that is not coming up. So I am back to finding out if anyone has triggered midi from the split point.

  17. Why did I get the 760 rather than the 730 etc.?I was looking for THIS sound and this keybed. And yes price was a factor. If this isn't going to work out I will be able to offer it elsewhere for a pretty reasonable price. But it's hard to believe.....no bass split. Were they trying to get you to buy accesory sound cards....not sure. Also my initial experience with VR,,09 was NOT good. With the first CV they offered up...yuck.Havent heard a 730 but.....list price was pretty steep. Plus I like older Roland. 99 percent here seem to have to have the latest....not me.

  18. Well thank you for the ultimate keys examples.I will look into it.And Scott pretty much made it clear that there are not going to be enough any upper lower organ splits coming from a stock760.....which seems unimaginable to me. Hopefully my last split question would be....could the split function trigger another midi sound source? I have several module options. I may have to consider flipping this and try to go back to something like the VK8m or even maybe consider the VR09 ....hoping it really is as good as this organ.....

  19. The real reason I got this was.....I wanted to revisit what Roland was doing with clonewheels back twenty years ago because I remember how much I enjoyed my VK8m module .                                                                                                                                                                                                                   At that time Roland had the VK8 which had key bounce issues, the VK8m module which would never bypass the Leslie sim without serious outboard modification and this....the VR760  I had a hunch that the 760 would not have keybounce issues and I was also aware of the bass split issue because a friend had a 760 and told me that. So this is the first time I have ever played or heard a 760.                                                                                                                                                                        I was able to get this for a song as they say. Roland was definitely serious about it's Hammond emulation apparently. It's holding its own and MORE against everything I throw at it. I am also surprised the Roland haters haven't shown up.

  20. One time as a joke I hooked up a VK8m to Casio and hid the module under a blanket. I was renting a Hammond to Dr. Lonnie Smith and I had the Casio in the dressing room. So said to him to come check out the Casio. You should have seen the look on his face when he tried it. I waited till the end of the night to show him what I did. He said it was the best  non tonewheel  thing he had ever heard.....this was 2010 or so

  21. The weight doesn't bother me. I was surprised when I carted it away from the sale. And if this thing doesn't do split it has a shallow case so I may do a dual manual thing. What I would like to know is.....is this 760 the same organ engine as the VR09. I mean....this thing sounds Outrageous!!! It really has a live CV sound....3rd harmonic slow percussion.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  I walked away from the VR09 when they had that silly vibrato in the CV. Plus I don't think they skimped on the electronics in this it's very clear sounding compared to.....some others. I have Viscount Mojo and HX3 modules here. Not going to say which are mud. I just can't believe the people who bitched about Rolands in years past.I got called some ugly names.
