  1. Yes! Warrior is on my 80s 'feel good' playlist when I'm feeling a bit nostalgic. Didn't Benjy post here in the forum years ago? Couldn't find it in the search, but I remember him asking some tips on gear, Scandal was going on tour (or I'm going insane). From the date he passed away, would have been prior to 2012. Dig this video from 2018, she still rocks.
  2. Drummer, always. Did have a rather unique experience, got invited to play with some folks a few months before covid hit. Drummer had some kind of mental handicap/condition - don't know what it was, but it's relevant for context. Hhe was in his late 50s, lived with his sister's family and she drove him to practice. He practiced like crazy and was easily the most prepared member as far as learning the songs. The guitar player was friends with the sister, and got him in the band as a favor since is was something he loved - which I thought was great to help him with this, and I think we should be accommodating of people's needs and special situation. As far as I know, he was not able to hold a job nor have much of a social life. It was difficult chatting with him. However, he was constantly disruptive. We would finish a song, we would be chatting among ourselves on what we liked, what needed improvement, and all that, and he would start playing random stuff, and it took a few minutes for him to stop. He would sit still for a minute, and the cycle repeats. Guitarist shrugged when I spoke with him about it a few times. Covid came along, and life got turned upside down. But, I would probably have quitted if Covid had not come along - it was just ruining it for me, even though I enjoyed the whole group (there were a few other factors, especially with his sister). However, I do hope he continues to play in bands one way or another. Maybe a topic for a AITA thread.
  3. You're not their target demographic anymore, Robert... 😀 I guess they are shooting for different audiences, really. Whether it's effective or not, only they can answer.
  4. Revived this one due to a new 'lost in translation' find. Found this in a manual for a headphone - 8th line make not sense, it reads - "Connector - 2x monkey of 3,5 mm" Rack my brains, it looks like they translated "Jack" to the word for monkey in Portuguese. This is correct when talking about a car jack (to change tires), which is colloquially called monkey in Brazil. 2nd line they also used the wrong translation, but wasn't as off. "Buzina" is a car horn. Horn is one that is frequently mistranslated, as they have multiple meanings. Some hilarious movie lines in the past.
  5. Also a feature not typical found... HDMI output for an external input.
  6. It would be cool if people posted photos of themselves with the gear as well. At least for me, I think it's cool to match faces to the names.
  7. I like this idea. A printed photo with a handwritten note would be a thoughtful gift. Kind of reminds me a professor in college. She was a bit of hard ass, but when the class was done I got in my mailbox some photos of an external event (this was 1992, so a real photo); I thought it was really cool. I hope I still have them and can scan them when I do get around to finishing my project.
  8. I still have one, with one of the PLG AN and PF. Curious what your interest still is, as the newer motifs have a much more comprehensive sound engine. Frustrating that they skimped on the full s30/s80 ROM, which is why I put the PF card in at the time (used it live in the early 2000's) since the pianos it did have were dreadful. The knobs is still a big plus IMHO. The import functionality was good at the time, but limited. I've tried to sell mine locally (unfortunately too much hassle to try to sell outside of Brazil), without much interest. Time to give it a shot again.
  9. It sounds a bit one of these 'vocal aahs' patches typically found in synths. I like the covers on David Bowie's concerts with Gail Ann Dorsey doing Freddie's parts. Cool piano comp, but it changes the vibe a bit
  10. Happy (belated) Father's days to all! (Different day here in Brazil, but I'll join in...) My dad taught me the first notes on a piano (plays guitar, but could play children songs on the piano). Will always cherish that. First musical memory I have. I'll leave these here - hope she enjoys the journey as much as I am.
  11. AKAI has tried this concept on "VST in a controller" and abandoned it before. I understand this is different as it adapted the MPC workflow to a key controller, we'll see.
  12. My wife and I are working from home. This has reduced immensely our gas bill, especially me (70km commute daily roundtrip), so this in itself has not triggered any decisions. Gas prices here are about $6,50 / gallon, but if you figure in purchase power parity is is a huge chunk of people's budgets. We're moving to a new office next month, but don't expect to go more than once a week to the office, and my wife is going to continue 100% WFH. Not gigging so not a factor. However, the whole conundrum with everything that is happening is prompting some major reflection. We're moving to a house next year where I'm installing PV solar panels, so this may speed up my decision to have an electric car.
  13. Don't disagree with how complex it is nor the impact, but Ukraine is NOT the biggest food producer. It's around #10. It does, however, supply heavily to countries with a bigger percentage of population of risk, and the war has created a domino effect with will hugely affect food availability.
  14. Fully agree. Around 2008 got introduced to a band called Within Temptation. Very interesting use of distorted guitar with orchestral arrangements, but what you described fits their lyrics also perfectly.
  15. Haven't listened to lately, but the first two albums were a insufferable listening experience. I actually enjoyed some of their tunes, but their extreme wall of sound / 0 dynamics compression approach makes it unlistenable for much time for me.
  16. Closer translation to the last one is 'Horny groupies" 😂
  17. I just purchased both a iPad Pro (USB-C) (which will be my music tool and I need to understand if and what of my old gear works), but also a last generation 'base model' iPad (9th gen) with the old lightning connector. I can do a test over the weekend if you'd like. This guy to be clear - https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1664332-REG/apple_mk2p3ll_a_10_2_ipad_wi_fi_256gb.html/overview
  18. Popular rock/pop singer from the 70 / 80s. Several hit songs that my generation fondly remembers (cool compositions with lyrics often tongue in cheek or provocative). One of my favorite artist in this genre here in Brazil. Frequently referred as "Queen of Brazilian Rock" (well deserved) Got special tickets for a small venue concert (don't think they went on sale) through a friend in the ertainment industry, with her and her band circa 2001-2002 (several changes over the year, but her husband has always been the guitarist and composer with her). At one point they stop the concert (up to this point large rock band), other musicians leave the stage, just her and her husband. "Look, let us know what oldies you want to play... just jot down in a piece of paper and come over here and give to us and will give it a shot. " And so they did - a few they had to scratch their heads to remember. They must have done this with 15 songs (shortened versions), just her and her husband on acoustic guitar. It felt like they were in playing in a party with friends.
  19. I think it was in this thread, but the links don't work and no images...
  20. In the past I used to dig for midi files that sounded close and then opening up in a DAW to view the notation when I was in a time crunch and exceeded my ability to transcribe. Required a bit of clean up, but worked. If you have to transpose to the key the band is playing in, it's easy. Even purchased some professional ones at the time which were incredibly close and helped me learn the tunes. Used to print them out for learning, but not to take to practice. As far as general notation (not directly what the OP asked, but...) - My personal 'fake' book were the chord changes annotated with the lyrics, but keeping the measures as evenly aligned as possible so I knew the changes without having to annotate sheet music. Worked for me, and helped me organize practice (specially the singer's timing...) Crude but it worked.
  21. The problem I see is that apple frequently changes form factor and connector type on the iPads, as well as impacts of iOS updates. The Alesis io dock tried to hit that market in a way, and soon after apple changed from the larger connector (don't remember the name) to the lighting connector, and now to the USB-C for a lot of the newer iPads. The montage does allow some integration to an Ipad, don't know what else.
  22. And different certifications by country / group of countries. Also have internal power supplies adjustable from 110/220. I think the draw from a lot of keyboards is too high for switching power supplies (please correct me), and most have a traditional liner power supply Heat generation from the power supply has to be figured into the design.
  23. Translating songs is very difficult from what I notice. Having a young daughter I'm familiar with both the Portuguese version and the English version on a lot of Disney tunes. To keep the general meaning while making it fluid, having the syllables line up, and all else is a dauting task. I feel a bit divided on the issue as on one side I see a tremendous work on the part of translators, on the other side I lament how much of the original intent was lost in a lot of the lyrics. I used to scorn a lot of the translations, but listening closer - as well as much bigger effort from translators - I came to view it differently and respect and applaud the effort before, but appreciate that I can listen to the originals. Take Let it Go from "Frozen" - I thought the general intent was kept in the Brazilian Portuguese and the translation really well done, the Portugal Portuguese was weird (quite different translations), the Latin American Spanish was quite good as well. It helped that they got some excellent singers for the local versions (The gal from Bulgaria gave me chills even though I couldn't understand a word). I though some of the frozen 2 songs didn't translate quite so well, however. I've seen a lot of Broadway/West End musicals in both the original version and the Brazilian Portuguese version, and I commend those involved. "Mamma Mia" was one I was sure they would botch up, and it worked out well, even if they had to rework a lot of the choruses which most people remember (having spent a lot of time in Europe in the 80s I listened to a lof of the songs and remember the lyrics). Luckily they didn't translate the Queen songs for "We will Rock You" here in Brazil (but did in some of the european countries from what I remember), which was a relief 😂 One translation that appalls me a bit is the 99 Luftballons / 99 Red Balloons. I thought the original German lyrics was clever and well constructed, the english translation was a mess.
  24. I have this one - it's very stable and sturdy. https://cosmomusic.ca/products/quik-lok-lph003
