I suppose- given the nature of this thread- I should have provided videos to compare.

As I recall, ”Revenge” was the first single from Ministry’s first album.

Compared to “Jesus Built My Hotrod”, the first single from Psalm 69, featuring Butthole Surfers’ Gibby Haynes on vocals.

  2. The Scorpions “Still Loving You” is still one of my all-time favorite songs to sing when my love life is bringing me down.

And let’s not forget Uli Jon Roth, shown here laying down one of the better opening riffs in early hard rock/classic metal…and knowing full well he’s done so.  (FWIW, “Sails of Charon” is another fun singalong song for me.)

And if you look at performances decades later (even after the one posted below), UJR is still playing that song with casual brilliance and awareness of how tasty those licks are.*

    * how tasty?  Let’s just say it’s one of the few songs Yngwie Malmsteen has covered in concert, and he plays it relatively straight up.

  3. I was just reading that Al Jourgenson is planning on winding down Ministry in 1-2 more albums, and that one may include reworked tracks from OR be a complete re-imagining of Ministry’s first album.

For those unaware, Ministy’s first album was a minor synthpop hit, but was so at odds with AJ’s inner musician that he burned the masters at a BBQ and hasn’t listened to or played any of the songs in 40 years.  if you’ve ever heard subsequent Ministry albums that pioneered industrial rock, you’d see how radically different they were.

    What changed?

Well, not his opinion of the final product.  Rather, he was taken to a show where a band did ONLY covers of that album.  He saw that there was something to the songs that people liked.  So he’s considering redoing those songs in his more characteristic style.

  4. Ok, Teh Interwebz et my post…

Cor-Tek have announced that, not only have they acquired the rights to DOD & Digitech pedals, etc., they’re actually rehiring the people behind several of their most highly regarded products.

Not exactly cool new pedals, but rather, the promise of things to come!

    Therein lies madness . . .

Couple of thoughts, watching this - First off, the website describes it as a DIY kit, but there are number of sites selling what appear to be completed units? I'd want to be sure which I was ordering, especially as they're not cheap.

Second, it really wants to be part of a Modular Synth rig. All those CV I/O's on the top panel want to connect to something, and some functions are only available by patching in other CV devices; your Guitar won't do anything useful with those jacks.

There are a number of true Analog and Virtual Analog Synths that feature Audio In jacks, which will allow you to process your Guitar through some of the Synth's functions, particularly the Filter Section, and any onboard effects. In that regard, you're not turning your Guitar into a Synth, you're just using parts of the Synth as an effects Processor.

If you're curious about the Roland TB-303 he keeps referring to, check out the Behringer TD-3-SR. It's a clone of the original, at a fraction of the absurd prices for an original, vintage model. ($129.99 for the Behringer at Sweetwater, versus $2,500+, wherever one turns up.) BTW, you CAN'T patch your Guitar through the TD-3-SR. The original TB-303 was a Groovebox, arguably the UR-Groovebox, but IMHO, $130 is a fair price for how it sounds.

Final note - Banana plugs allow you to stack plugs, so you can have one CV Out, say an LFO Out, controlling more than one CV In, let's say Osc1 Pitch, and Filter Frequency, so you get Pitch Vibrato and Filter Sweep clocked to the same LFO Waveform and Rate. The trade-off can be that there's only so much Voltage to go around.

Yes, I've been doing this far too long . . .

I strongly suspect that the musicians who use this pedal with a guitar are multi-instrumentalists who are ALSO using it with some kind of synth rig

  7. Re: coil splitting

Rio Grande is the first (but not only) pickup company I know of that has been selling a line of humbuckers that are actually a pair of their singlecoils in a humbucker housing, wired to act like a humbucker.  Which means that when coil splitting is enabled, you get the exact sound of one of their singlecoil pickups.

RG has at least 2 such humbuckers in their product line: one using a pair of particular Strat-style singlecoils, and another using a pair of their SC-sized P90s.

  8. BTW, in the interests of absolute clarity & honesty, I don’t see anything wrong with buying a guitar basedrimarily or sometimes EXCLUSIVELY on its visual aesthetics.  I just try not to if the price has been boosted too much because it’s someone’s signature guitar or some such.

For instance, I own a Fernandes Ravelle* Goldtop with the classic Seymour Duncan Jb/Jazz humbucker pairing.  It was once owned by a buddy of Reeves Gabrels.  The price wasn’t inflated by that last fact.

Years after I bought it, Fernandes released a limited run of guitars featuring a finish by Japanese artist SHIN.  The Ravelles in that run were functionally identical to the Goldtop.  I REALLY wanted one, but never pulled the trigger.  The markup on them was relatively small as compared to the non-SHIN versions; I just never had the cash before my favorite design sold out.**

    * Essentially a LP homage with a different body shape.

** repeating my history with the brand.  Back in 2003 or so, I passed on buying a Star Wars themed Stratclone because I didn’t know the brand.  Before I figured them out, they were sold out.  They’re a bit pricier on the used market these days.

As far as used Guitars, here's one that I'd grab, if I had $1300 to spend. The Heritage Guitars were made by Luthiers who'd worked on some of the iconic Gibsons, and stayed behind in Kalamazoo to keep doing what they did best. Yes, it's better than a Gibson, IMHO. The Heritage H-140 used

I can almost guarantee you that if you don't buy the Heritage, someone in here probably will, at that price . . .

I just noticed: that comes with a case!

And it’s practically the favorite finish for Ace Frehley.

The Les Paul, SG, Fender Strat and Tele are the most copied guitars, I believe. Unless you are set on having the Gibson name on the headstock you may want to consider some options. I know when I got Stat it had to be a Fender, but now I would at least consider other brands. A few Years ago when considering another guitar I looked at Reverend.

    https://reverb.com/item/59454147-reverend-guitars-roundhouse-ivy-outfield-guitar-blem-0163

I actually own a Roundhouse from back when it was shaped even MORE like a LP.  Great brand, too.  Got 5.

    mJtNhfI.jpeg

L-R: Rick Vito sig (hardtail); Roundhouse (original version); Manta Ray 390 LE; Flatroc 15th Anniversary LE; Sensei RA

As noted, there’s a lot of companies making LP clones (and copies of other classic guitar designs), so it’s really easy to find one that suits you.  Some even streeeeetch the definition of LP into 25” or longer scale lengths, tremolo bridges, and other things absent from the originals.

If I wanted a very Gibsony LP made in America, I’d probably look at Heritage.  If I were looking at something more affordable and still true to the visual aesthetic, I’d look at Japanese companies like Navigator, FGN, Tokai, and so forth.

Then you get into brands like Carvin/Keisel, Agile, Reverend, Godin…I could go on and on.

And of course, there’s guitars that emulate the LP tone without being all that close to the visual aesthetics.

IOW, there’s never been a better time to shop for an LP type guitar than right now!

So what are you looking for in your LP?

  11. To be clear, I have nothing against Epiphone.  I’d probably buy one of their Dots, SGs or some such.  But so far, of the 5 LP-style guitars I own, none is a Gibson or Epi*, and only one was over $1000 new (most of my guitars were purchased used).  And maybe it’s just me, but I’m not seeing the value here.

Barry Slipher, is there something besides the aesthetics that is drawing you to this particular guitar?

    * and for the record, none of my “Strats” or “Telecasters” were made by Fender or Squier

Should I fork over the money for a Epiphone Adam Jones Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar(Heffernan Rose Skirt)! Asking price is $1,299.

My rule of thumb is that I don’t generally buy signature guitars unless they offer some mechanical/ergonomic feature that is otherwise hard to find, either alone or as a total package.  Aesthetics alone generally wouldn’t qualify for me.

This is not to say that I don’t have sig guitars, because I do.  But they tend to bundle features not commonly found together.  Some are for guitarists whose names I didn’t recognize when I bought the guitars.

And I really didn’t notice anything unusual about that Epi.  Is there something about it that sets it apart from other LPs?
