  1. I have come to the opinion that the classic P90 sound is a LOT like what many players use pedals to get their Strats & teles to sound like. They’ve become my favorite singlecoil type…so far.😉 Of my 5 Reverends, 2 have P90s, as does one of my Fret-Kings* and a Rock Beach custom. And mixing a bridge HB with a P90 in the neck (and sometimes the middle, too) has become one of my favorite configurations. As for aftermarket ones? My go-to for noiseless ones would be from RailHammer, but theirs ate HB sized. Rio Grand makes P90s in the standard sizes, but also singlecoil-sized, HB-sized, and almost uniquely, humbuckers made by pairing 2 singlecoil-sized ones in a HB housing (for splitting). I also recommend Vintage Vibe, Lollar (found in some Godins), Bareknuckle, and The Creamery. (The latter made the HB-sized one in my Rock Beach.) And I understand the Seymour Duncan P-Rails are pretty good, too. * the perfectly acceptable stock Wilkinsons were upgraded to Bareknuckle Stockholms. No regrets! It was because the ones in my Reverends were audibly better, essentially as good as the Stockholms.

  3. I forgot to post this when it first came out. Better late than never!
  4. I seem to remember you posting about that here. It may be why I haven’t pulled the trigger on one. But I’m still looking. However, if Dean really is going under. I might want to score a second Cadillac- new or used- before that happens. I always wanted to have one to drop some Bareknuckle Rebel Yell humbuckers into, and I didn’t want to alter the TC one I have. Nothing wrong with its pickups, for certain.
  5. I got my Deans in 2003, shortly after Zelinsky’s second (?) stint in the company. After that, he cofounded DBZ, but left them, too. There’s some DBZ designs I’d love to own, at least one of which has been discontinued. They had a double cut design reminiscent of a Gibson E355 or some such, but with different ergonomics. The body was broader, but amazingly flat- maybe a finger’s thickness at the edge. His current company is DZPL. They had/have some innovative stuff I’d like to get my hands on as well, including one (again, discontinued) design that echoed the flat one he made with DBZ. But instead of a E355 style body, it was a pancaked LP.
  6. He might still do it. He hasn’t been associated with Dean in over a decade. His current company- #3 for those keeping track- is Dean Zelinsky Private Label. They don’t have a V in their product line, but that’s usually immaterial when you’re talking custom work. https://www.deanzelinskyguitars.com
  7. Dean Guitars isn’t my favorite electric guitar company, but they were my first. I bought a Special Select EVO (LP clone) and a Time Capsule Cadillac back in 2003, and I still own and play both of them. Now it looks like between their loss to Gibson (under appeal), the departure of several prominent artists from their lineup, and an ugly battle between the mother and son who currently own Dean (and other companies) together, things aren’t looking good. This guy does a nice summation of the issues bringing the company down. Goodbye Dean. Silver lining: if Dean DOES go belly up, perhaps the company’s founder, Dean Zelinsky, can buy back the IP he created all those decades ago.
  8. There was a place I used to go to- long out of business- that made a lox pizza. Essentially, they cooked a pizza crust naked, and then slathered it with cream cheese while still warm, adding red onions, capers and nova lox. IOW, it was a classic lox bagel in pizza form, big enough to share. SOOOO good!
  9. I don’t know if serious AB fans would consider me one, but I have all the albums. Definitely a solid band with goooood songs.
  10. Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh! WANT! (For no good reason.)
  11. I just heard about this band called Dirty Honey making some noise on the charts. So I gave them a listen. They remind me of the 80s/90s band Kix- mainly because of the singer- and they have a solid heavy blues rock sound typical of that era. I hear echoes of G’n’R, Bulletboys, Dirty Looks and The Black Crowes (as well as others). All in all, a nice mix. I don’t know how much I like THEM vs the nostalgic appeal, but I’m definitely going to give them a chance to win me over.
  12. Been a minute and a half since I’ve heard that one!
  13. Looks tasty! For clarity, I’m assuming that’s a dry sherry, not a sweet one, right?
  14. Re: psychobilly Bands I’m a fan of: The Cramps, Rev. Horton Heat, Tiger Army. Bands with a caveat: Stuart Baker a.k.a. Unknown Hinson. I have to mention him, because he does fun music, and many would also know him as a voice actor from Squibillies. BUUUUUUT, as of 2020, he’s revealed himself to be a bit of a jerk. He took verbal shots at Dolly Parton (WTF, dude!) and espoused several far-right talking points, including some “light white-supremacy” that cost him his job on Squidbillies AND caused Reverend to immediately stop production on his 2 (really good) signature guitars. IOW, he’s a poster boy for separating an artist from his art.
  15. I’m a fan of rockabilly, psychobilly and rockabilly revival. In the last category, the career arc of Brian Setzer (with Stray Cats and as a solo artist) looms large. And Setzer opened the door for several other great acts to carry the torch. One of my faves is Imelda May. Here she is on Later…With Jools Holland performing “Mayhem”. A few years & albums after that appearance, she divorced Daryl Higham (the lead guitarist in the band) and they went their separate ways. Imelda has continued releasing albums, and has guested with other artists like Jeff Beck and Sinead O’Connor (to name just a couple). However, Daryl didn’t fade into obscurity. He formed Katmen with Strat Cats drummer, Slim Jim Phantom and eventually joined by Al Gare. They have been releasing their own quality rockabilly music.
  16. I can’t say I’m a big fan of Damon’s- either in Blur or Gorillaz- but there’s enough killer tunes in his discography that I have great respect for his work. Both bands have songs I’d consider essential listening for their time, and I have a few albums by each. Some of my personal favorites:
  17. Man, have they fallen since Jeff took over! I know lots of happy Carvin owners, and one thing they all pointed out was the quality of the customer service. But since Carvin became Kiesel, there’s been a steady stream of people complaining about how they were treated by CustServ. Some have even named certain personnel in particular as being unprofessional. I’m sorry you’ve had this experience. When I bought my first 2 electrics, I went with Dean. One was a Special Select EVO (a mid-level LP clone) and the other was a Time Capsule Cadillac (expensive limited edition). Like you, one of the ones they sent the wrong one- the Caddy. But instead of holding mine hostage like in your situation, Dean delivered the correct guitar via personal delivery by the regional sales rep. (They even offered me a discount on the incorrect Caddy, but there was no way I could afford it.)
  18. Another song was released from the new Hives album. At this point, it’s clear their hiatus has NOT changed them.
  19. I like PRS & Opeth. I almost bought a PRS as my first electric, but I didn’t understand the used market back then.😕 And I’ve actually gotten my 77yo mom enjoying some Opeth as well. Mostly the more prog stuff without the death growls, as one might expect. For example:
  20. I suppose- given the nature of this thread- I should have provided videos to compare. As I recall, ”Revenge” was the first single from Ministry’s first album. Compared to “Jesus Built My Hotrod”, the first single from Psalm 69, featuring Butthole Surfers’ Gibby Haynes on vocals.
  21. The Scorpions “Still Loving You” is still one of my all-time favorite songs to sing when my love life is bringing me down. And let’s not forget Uli Jon Roth, shown here laying down one of the better opening riffs in early hard rock/classic metal…and knowing full well he’s done so. (FWIW, “Sails of Charon” is another fun singalong song for me.) And if you look at performances decades later (even after the one posted below), UJR is still playing that song with casual brilliance and awareness of how tasty those licks are.* * how tasty? Let’s just say it’s one of the few songs Yngwie Malmsteen has covered in concert, and he plays it relatively straight up.
  22. I was just reading that Al Jourgenson is planning on winding down Ministry in 1-2 more albums, and that one may include reworked tracks from OR be a complete re-imagining of Ministry’s first album. For those unaware, Ministy’s first album was a minor synthpop hit, but was so at odds with AJ’s inner musician that he burned the masters at a BBQ and hasn’t listened to or played any of the songs in 40 years. if you’ve ever heard subsequent Ministry albums that pioneered industrial rock, you’d see how radically different they were. What changed? Well, not his opinion of the final product. Rather, he was taken to a show where a band did ONLY covers of that album. He saw that there was something to the songs that people liked. So he’s considering redoing those songs in his more characteristic style.
  23. Hadn’t realized Knobs was gone- haven’t been looking lately.
  24. Ok, Teh Interwebz et my post… Cor-Tek have announced that, not only have they acquired the rights to DOD & Digitech pedals, etc., they’re actually rehiring the people behind several of their most highly regarded products. Not exactly cool new pedals, but rather, the promise of things to come!
