  1. OK...an update 4 years later and after taking about 18 months off from playing.

I still love this guitar, it"s great for playing surf & classic rock. It still feels good. But the honeymoon is over. Nothing serious, just that I have found one thing I"m considering changing: the pickups.

Don"t get me wrong- the stock Wilkinson HB and miniHBs are still very good. I"d buy another one of these no question.* But they"re just a little muddier than the HBs I have in my best guitars, so I want to bring this guitar up to the next level. I"m sure I can find genuine upgrades out there. I know I can go brighter. I know I can go higher output.

The crux of the issue- if I do this- is the miniHBs. Because the only miniHBs I"ve played are these Wilkinsons and the RevTrons in my Reverends, I"m unclear as to the bigger picture. The RevTrons sound more like the FillerTrons that inspired them, and I really like them, but those aren"t for sale as new pickups.

I"ve heard comparisons between miniHBs from other brands and the (same sized) Firebird pickups, which ( like the RevTrons) seem brighter.

Which brings up the wildcard: the Ventura has Fret-King"s Vari-coil control, which is similar in function to Reverend"s Bass Contour knob, in that it alters the sound of humbuckers into a singlecoil like tone.

So I"m wondering, if I do this, should I stick with some brand"s miniHB or should I risk trying a Firebird style HB? Are there any of either that stand out to you who have used them? Or are there other miniHB options I haven"t considered?

    * in fact, I have a couple in my watched list on Reverb, etc.

  2. I have one- and a Fernandes Ravelle with a sustainer- but I don"t really use either much. Not that I don"t LIKE them, but more that they don"t fit my playstyle all that much, which is very rhythmic.

...not that I"ll ever let either slip my grasp! Every once in a while, I want to go on deep space explorations, and either tool is a great tool for such a journey.

  3. Yeeks! How does a virtual monopoly fail?

Is yours the only market they"re in, or is your island one of many of their markets?

    As for the frozen bread...

I"m here in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, and I know of a few restaurants that import French bread baguettes and mini-baguettes from New Orleans, many from the same bakery, Gambino"s. In fact, it"s sold in big boxes at one of our local chef/restaurant supply stores. And it"s pretty good. It may not be quite as good as fresh back home, but it does compare well with the local alternatives available from the Vietnamese (basically French) bakeries here.

A grocery chain here called Market Street has a decent bakery as well, but all of their dough comes from some centralized professional kitchen. All they do at the store is the final bake. And while their stuff isn"t as good as some of the teeny-tiny bakeries scattered around the metroplex, they"re definitely a step up from the pre-bagged stuff in the sliced bread aisle.

So whether or not the Love"s alternatives will be worth a damn will depend HIGHLY on who is doing the baking and how they handle the dough or loaves.

  4. A quick note on the Radiator models.

For some reason, when they brought the Radiator back, they changed the body a bit (it"s chambered or Semihollow, depending on which review you read) and went for humbuckers instead of singlecoils, but kept the full-frontal pickguard aesthetic.

However, good used ones of the original version can still be found. Here"s one with a mirror pickguard:

Oh yeah...and here"s a Triumph with the natural wood clearcoat finish!

  5. The pickups in the Triumph are indeed singlecoils (I can definitely hear the EMF fields generated by stuff in the vicinity) and AFAIK, are not actually P90s. They seem to be wound in-house, and I have found out about them is that Godin calls them 'low noise', which does seem accurate. I can"t say if they"re like gold foils because I"ve never tried gold foils,

The Triumph- and my Godin Belmont- are both being eyed for some kind of open G or C tuning for use with slide. I looked at various versions of both, and of the ones listed below, I"m looking hardest at the bolded ones.

    Open C (C,E,G)

    Repetitive: C-E-G-C-E-G

    Overtones: C-C-G-C-E-G

    Popular variant: C-G-C-G-C-E

The bolded variant is pretty close to NST, which I already use; could be good, could be bad. That similarity could help me, or it could trip me up.

    Open G (G,B,D)

    Repetitive: G-B-D-G-B-D

    Overtones: G-G-D-G-B-D

    Popular variant: D-G-D-G-B-D

This is the Keith Richards version. I know 'Keef' doesn"t use the 6th string, but...I"m not him, sooooo...

  6. I have a RR HSC I picked up for a funny-shaped Fret-King. Maybe I"ll give it a try for size. Hell..I have Gator & Fender cases around as well. so why not?

    Food for thought!

As for the Triumph, I actually haven"t tried surf with it, which is odd for me. Perhaps I"ll give that a whirl tonight as well.ðð½ðð½ðð½

  7. Thanks for the info!

    Re: price.

I have so many pedals that can use expression pedals that even if I bought CHEAP ones, I"d rack up a hefty bill. Now, I realize I don"t really need to do that- I"d only 'need' as many EPs as I had pedals on a board that could use one. Nonetheless, I"d aim for quality over quantity, even though it could add up quickly. I"m not hard on my stuff, and I"d rather opt for something dependable.

  8. Right now, it"s still strung and set up the way it arrived. The intonation is fine, soooo... We"ll see what happens when I restring it. Since I"m considering using it for slide in Open C or G, it will need a setup anyway.

As for the case, it"s been in an Epiphone LP case all this time, but I really need to keep looking. A Tele case might do the trick. Thanks!
