  1. I used a hacksaw to cut down various parts of keyboard stands. Just make sure you have an adequate supply of elbow grease.
  2. I actually bought a polycarbonate Chapman Stick back in the late 80's- I thought I could transfer my keyboard technique to it, but admittedly didn't apply myself to it. Emmett did practically hold my hand to help me get started, a wonderful, gentle soul. Very sorry to hear of his passing, but 85 is a life worthy of celebration. Here's the inimitable Rachel Flowers playing one for the first time... [video:youtube] A year later she was doing concerts with it...
  3. What is there a gang of Angry Banjo Players who hate keyboards DDOSing us. Angry Accordion Players; the Angry Banjo Players attack the guitar forums...
  4. There's literally nothing like a distantly vintage, well-loved synth being reissued in the modern day, and having it meet your expectations- like the Minimoog Reissue. But even better is having a distantly vintage, well-loved synth being reissued in the modern day, and having it exceed your expectations. I briefly owned a Waldorf Microwave I back around 1990-ish, but stupidly sent it back. Ever since then I have wanted to reacquire a MW I but missed out on auctions. The price for a vintage, Nextel-trashed, have to ship from Europe then re-do the power supply for 120V vintage MW I was going for around $3K once it was delivered and usable. Then Waldorf did this: Instabuy, and I have been thrilled ever since...!
  5. I get an email about once or twice a year, very rare to get a phone call. I go back literally 30 years with them. Same salesperson, no lessâ¦
  6. I am not a fan of the Dead (hoo-boy, but my brother is!) but I am pretty impressed with how well their auction seems to be going. I guess Deadheads don't mind parting with thousands of dollars? In comparison, the Zappa estate did an auction some years back, and I don't remember many items even getting bids.
  7. I have locked myself out for about 17 years now...
  8. The only reason I haven't ordered a Hydrasynth Deluxe is because I already own several PolyAT controllers, but I am still tempted because the Hydrasynth sounds great, even for a "well-designed soft synth with a hardware GUI." Oh, and because I ordered a Waldorf M- I had always wanted an original Microwave I but they were just too expensive, and usually too beaten-up looking for $2500. Actually pretty clever for Waldorf to price the M at what the vintage rack pieces are going for... I would have thought the patents ran out years ago, considering the Ensoniq synths were made in the 80's, but I don't know the applicable patent laws. I do think the lack of PolyAT controllers was more a result of expense and manufacturer inertia- thinking there was no demand. ASM seems to be proving them wrong!
  9. My 2016 MBP 15" is holding up, but I will get the new 16" when it becomes available. Upgrading every 5 years seems reasonable to me. I do use all 4 USB-C ports in my studio, so with the expected 3 USB-C ports (plus MagSafe, SD card slot and HDMI port) I am hoping there will be a multi-USB-C hub available.
  10. LOL, you are talking to a physician who still uses paper charts...!
  11. Showing your age, Lady, that was back around 30-odd years ago! However, it is extremely encouraging that ASM put it PolyAT in the Hydrasynth, if anything I hope their parent company licenses the use of their keybed for other manufacturers, or maybe Evil B may come thru with something. But right now I am extremely tempted by the Hydrasynth Deluxe, in case anyone was remotely wondering...
  12. Damn right! And we would still have floppy drives! So you are saying floppy drives are still standard? For all we know, they would be if Apple hadn't forced the rest of the industry to innovate. Each time, they were chastised by the PC world when they changed or eliminated something, but then everyone followed suit in short order. Again, cable connections may become obsolete if everything from charging to file transfers, etc. becomes wireless.
  13. However that is an important consideration for hand-held devices, and nanotech in the future. But then again, if everything goes completely wireless (charging, etc.) then I guess it becomes a completely moo point. [video:youtube]
  14. Someone is always thinking you are desperate to sell, so they try to lowball. On Reverb I do set the low limit, so I never see the ridiculous offers. Anything otherwise insulting I just ignore. If they really want it bad enough, they will keep trying, just be patient and stand your ground. Another thing is people offering a trade of some sort; on Reverb I put Not Interested in Trades in the description, in the hope that they might get the idea. Overall, Reverb has been a good experience, I haven't done any eBay selling in quite awhile. I will also offer stuff here and on Gearspace, and usually do ok there. Haven't tried Craigslist in years.
  15. I have always wanted a µWave I, this is almost (but not quite) up there with the Moog Reissue as far as a dream synth for me.
  16. I deal with a lot of retired people in my practice, and two things I have been told repeatedly: 1)"Ever since I retired, I have been busier than ever!" (especially if they started "part-time" consulting, etc.). 2)"My health was fine, then everything went to $#!T when I retired!" Not sure why this would be related, I think it is more a function of getting older...
  17. Yeah, maybe that solo could have been Vox-y, but at least it was an organ solo! I just remember it fairly well because I loved this song when it came out, and noticed the solo incidentally. Since then, I haven't heard much Hammond in popular music save for some background work, and definitely not in anything contemporary. But then again, I couldn't name a Taylor Swift song if my life depended on it. Sleeping Satellite was unfortunately the only thing Tasmin Archer charted; it's too bad because she has such a wonderful voice. I hadn't seen either video prior to my linking to the USA version. So as I kinda suspected, Hammond is used in more "classic" songs. These days I am digging more into Tony Kaye-era Yes and Jon Lord/Deep Purple; more distorted (and less Leslie-dependent) tones. I do definitely like Hammond for "pads" because it is a cleaner sound. Years ago I saw ELP play Tarkus in concert, and Emerson had turned to his GX-1 for "Stones of Years" instead of sticking with his Hammond, which I would have preferred. There are even YouTubes of ELP rehearsing where no Moog are set up, and their Brain Salad Surgery pieces actually sound great with just Hammond. Again, I wish I had money/time/space for a decent organ setup...!
  18. No, there isn't a new forum dedicated to Hammond organs, but I was kinda wondering why so much attention is paid here to Hammonds, clones, chops, rebuilds, refurbs, plugins, Leslies, Leslie simulators, free B3s left at the side of the road, etc. Sometimes it seems like half of the active threads at any given time. The last time I can remember a "pop" song having a Hammond solo was Tasmin Archer's Sleeping Satellite (starting at 2:47) back in 1992: [video:youtube] Thirty years ago? So are all you actively gigging organizer people playing mostly older classic rock, blues, etc? Prog rock tribute bands? Or is there some modern genre that uses a lot of Hammond that I am not aware of? FWIW if I had the time, money and space I would love to have a two manual Hammond Clonewheel with a modern Leslie cab, but then again I am a frustrated old prog rocker...Yes covers, anyone?
  19. DAMMIT! I told them I wanted a five octave version! I guess there is a such thing as too many keys, huh? Yup, it's a 2-fer deal - more polyphony, and more keys The joke is that I had lobbied for a 5-octave keyboard ever since the Hydrasynth came out, and they go and deliver 6 octaves! The C-C range choice is interesting (my GEM S3 is 76 keys E-F), but I am not complaining...
  20. DAMMIT! I told them I wanted a five octave version!
  21. 4-unit under keyboard rack: Furman power strip on top, two empty spaces, Focusrite Clarett 8Pre on the bottom. Not much use for rack gear these days, but I am always on the lookout for a Waldorf Microwave Iâ¦
