kudyba
For the past 2 days, I've been "hit" with 4 separate AOL Instant Messages from users with girlish names all spamming me to go to porn sites. I've now learned to block them before even accepting the AIM but for crying out loud how the hell do these losers dig up a screen name?!? I don't have an AOHELL account--it's only for AIM--and only a few people know what it even is!
Dwarf
Every now and then I get an ICQ message from an ICQ account that doesn't even exist (the account changes each time). It's always spam, always for porn. I wonder how they know I ... I mean, I wonder why they think I'm into that stuff? -- Rob I have the mind of a criminal genius.....I keep it in the freezer next to mother. Even if you don't have an AOL account but use AIM they can get your screen name. Sorry but that's the way it is. They bought ICQ too so yer stuck there too. The other thing they do is buy that stuff from anyone and everyone so your info could also have been sold to them by someone who got it from some forum or other, web site & etc. Life's a bitch, then you get spammed! :D :D :D Our Joint "When you come slam bang up against trouble, it never looks half as bad if you face up to it." Tedster
Damn shit of it is...AOL plays so "high and mighty". I remember when our kids were younger, they got in some chatroom and ended up in a flame war...and AOL cut us off. No problem, thanks actually, because it always seemed like some anal hall monitor was watching your every move. But, like you said, a lot of porn spam comes from AOL users somehow. But, the last straw was when I started getting telemarketing calls from AOL. :freak:  "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"

Gus Lozada
Originally posted by kudyba: For the past 2 days...
Bob, you've been lucky. I have received SPAM messages since I was only a user of AIM (couple of years ago) and now that I'm an AOHell user -that will end up soon- I suffer of that on a DAILY Basis. It gets even worse in the AOL mail account. I always delete over 10 spam e-mail messages. Arghhhhhhhhh  BTW, the names of those "hot girls" are quite easy to recognize... The Studio Pet-Rock
Man, this shit's happening on yahoo messenger as well now. I've gotten plenty of "Instant Spam" over the last few weeks. Pretty lame.
Wewus432
I turn instant messaging off most of the time. In AOL go to People-Buddy List-Setup-Preferences-Privacy-Block All. It's just annoying to me when I'm already doing something on the computer to have to stop and talk if I don't want to.
Rim
Find more info about it at CERT . By the way, "social engineering" is, in lay man's terms, tricking people. It tries to take advantage of people, not technology (although technology is used). Basically, you shouldn't accept any "calls" that aren't in your buddy list and definitely don't download or click on a link from someone you don't know. aka riffing Double Post music: Strip Down http://rimspeed.com http://loadedtheband.com
