Jimmy Webb Talks About the Great American Song Writers

Recommended Posts

So many amazing nuggets here in this edited moment from the Rick Beato interview with one of my favorite American song writers, Jimmy Webb.  Very interesting studying the chord structure of Wichita Lineman, his comments about Burt Bacharach, and so much more.  Enjoy!

Interesting how he played the relative major substitute of the original's vii at 7:46. It jumped out to my ears as an ethereal but ill-fitting reharm.

That song is filled with harmonic surprises.

Webb is a brilliant writer: great sense of atmosphere and mood just in the chords and phrasing he chooses.

The legend speaks. He's forgotten more about the art of the American pop song, than many will ever learn. Certainly more than I will.

My favorite album is Ten Easy Pieces. Maybe because he is accompanying himself on the piano.

Like Bruce Hornsby, he digs deeply and so naturally into his musical American roots. Much gratitude to Rick Beato for this interview. ❤️
