The Pogues, often I have been in a better place on Xmas Eve, but tbis has often reminded me of how fortunate I am to so be. Vale

Shane MacGowan, irascible frontman of The Pogues, has died at age 65

I don't know in the others parts of the world but here in Europe, during '90s, the lesson learned from the Pogues, their mix of punk and folk, led to the rediscovery of folk music by younger people and made it significant again.

For me it was the key to picking up the accordion, conquering the front of the stage and above all understanding the profound meaning of popular music.

Not a small thing for a kid (like me) who grew up with synthesizers first and MTV then...

He was the primary influence behind a celtic/punk fusion band I was in for four years in Boston in the late 80's through early 90's.

I saw him perform at a celtic festival in San Jose in the 1990's and he was amazing as a live performer. One of the festival's highlights.

I first heard Fairytale of New York on the radio late one deep and dark December night.  I was galvanized.  What a transcendent, uplifting composition.  What a thrilling performance.  The other day, in the wake of Shane’s death, I saw that it had been voted the number one all-time favourite Christmas song in the UK in some survey.  I don’t know about the legitimacy of that survey, but the song has remained at the top of my favourite Christmas song list ever since I first heard it, right up there with Joni Mitchell’s River.
