Modifying a new stand

Recommended Posts

I purchased THIS STAND. I have been on a quest for a keyboard stand where the top board gets as close as possible to create a better dual organ experience. If you look at stand, I was able to reverse second tier brace so top tier would hang over bottom keyboard. This allows me to place Mojo61 forward to the proper position. The only issue now is, the Mojo61 is too high. It appears if I added more screw holes to the full length of the stems, then the two boards would be close enough.

I know there are those people here that have modified their stands. (BTW, why doesn't manufacturer just drills as many holes as possible?) I'm drilling into two sides of the four sided stems. I'm assuming the integrity won't be compromised as there as still two solid sides.

Anyone have good (or bad,) experiences modifying their steel keyboard stand? Obviously, I can't return if I move forward with the modification.

I actually like how this stand looks. I could even add a 25 pedal board, if I so choose to and it is not an Apex stand, which gives me PTSD in relation to the 25+ years of playing GB.

thanks

I haven't drilled into this particular stand, but I've drilled out the On-Stage Z stands for desired height settings with no issues.

What is your bottom board in this rig? If it's something with a bit of a flat top to it, even just a few inches worth, then that stand you have is a prime candidate for the world famous @tonysounds mod, where you place the front feet of your top keyboard directly on the bottom keyboard, and use threaded rod with wing nuts and crutch tips or similar to hold up the back end of your bottom keyboard, and just leave all the factory 2nd tier attachments at home.

Details here https://forums.musicplayer.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/2373769/WS550_Mod_for_2nd_tier

Just double-check the diameter of the holes in the horizontals of that stand - 3/8" threaded rod fits fine through the QuikLok WS-550 but your stand might be slightly different.

I wrap a piece of black gaff tape around the threaded rod (the long way!) to make it disappear visually.

I modified this stand with two assemblies shaped like letter F on their side. The assemblies were made from 1" square aluminum and only required two holes drilled into the stand . With the F assemblies on their sides my Hammond sits on the long section of the F. With this method of course, there is no height or tilt adjustment. That's OK for me. I made sure the Fs were dimensioned so the distance between the two boards was right for me. And I prefer the Hammond sits flat like a console rather than tilted. I could not paste a jpg here and failed at pasting a link from our website. So here's a link to our website gallery. https://www.mojo-rhodes.com/gallery There are two images showing the F's at around 1/3 down the page and again about 3/4 down the page.

I got in touch with Technical High School and the metal fabrication teacher told me to bring them over on Monday. Hopefully, he oversee some students and get some experience and I won't have to mess up the stand. I am going to have them just add as many more holes.

I saw the pics of your set up. Very nice. I'm hoping I can get Mojo61 even closer.

I got back the modified second tier stems from Technical HS. I got to commend them. The teacher had six students working on it and learning. A great win-win. They even painted the new holes.

I also wrote a letter to Griffin, makers of the stand and told them I was adding holes and that they should consider doing it for a more versatile stand. They wrote me back and said they will ask their engineers and it might be on future iterations of stand. They owe me big time.

Okay, enough with all the holes and adjustability nonsense.

Time to whip out more pictures of the discontinued On-Stage 2-Tier Z Non-Adjustable "RED BARON".

Doesn't hold the 2 boards very close together (can always take it to a welder's shop to fix that), but very few parts to come loose or get lost... a predicament that used to curse me, now gone forever.
