Eric Iverson
My doctor wants me to come in and give blood. Who does the think he is? DRACULA?? Got me to thinking - do I know my blood type? I THINK I remember reading that it's "B negative" but am not sure. {I try not to let it affect my attitude toward life.) I guess I can ask him when I see him, so I can put the information in my wallet, in case I ever need a transfusion. Do you guys know yours? Just out of curiosity. PS I think that only "red blooded Americans" should be allowed to play guitar in public, and maybe "blue bloods" like Sir Paul McCartney or Sir Elton John..... if Elton even PLAYS guitar.... Larryz
It says O positive on my dog tags. I hope the Army was right when they did their test back in '69...my mother always disagreed with their findings. Maybe I'll get re-tested some day just to check it out! Take care, Larryz
DocPate
@Larry, my dog tags said AB. Ive given blood before and it wasn't question.
desertbluesman
I am AB positive I think. I gotta give blood to my primary care physician every year, at the same time I ask him to write a prescription for all my other specialist doctors as well. My PCP has a blood lab draw in his own office which is a 15 minute wait with very few if any ahead of me when I go. If I go to Sonora Quest Blood lab it is 50 people in the room and many probably have communicable diseases, I refuse to do that anymore. dbm If it sounds good, it is good !! http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=143231&content=music
d halfnote
O neg, so I can give & get from all y'all ... ... which is exactly the way I like it & the way it should be. However there are abt 30 diff blood type categorization systems; look 'em up to see what's what abt 'em...someday it might be important. BTW, I doubt anyone's gonna get anything contagious from the mere act of giving blood unless yer in someplace like Crazy Cousin Bob's Blood Shoppe. It's a good thing to do; how ya think they save many ppl's lives ? d=halfnote
Eric Iverson
I used to give plasma occasionally, 30+ years ago or so, and everything was from a sterile sealed package, used once and then thrown away, so the risk was minimal. There are POSSIBLE risks to receiving blood, but in most cases the need is urgent and so the benefits outweigh them. And they do screen blood donors, I am told. There is one religious group that is totally against blood transfusions; they'd rather see people bleed to death - literally. No further comment; I don't want to start a religious argument. d halfnote
The good thing is that such beliefs affect them not others---thank goodness nobody's bombing plasma ctrs ! d=halfnote

whitefang
B+ here, too. Said that for years on my Red Cross donor card, and I think they'd know a few things about correctly typing blood. Sharkman
I'm O positive and the last time I checked, I was CMV negative. CMV stands for cytomegalo virus. Since I wasn't exposed to that virus, my blood donations to the Red Cross went to newborn babies who couldn't survive getting exposed to CMV. I used to donate as often as I could until I found out that the Red Cross made some good money by selling my blood. All I got was orange juice and a cookie. I rock; therefore, I am. Larryz
My experience is just the opposite of yours Sharkman...I was told I can't give blood as I had Malaria from my time in Viet Nam. I'm not sure if it still would hold up as my excuse for not giving blood as I hear they take just about anybody these days! I would have to check into it before giving blood, if I ever decide to do so. +1 on the Red Cross or a blood bank should share in the rewards if you have a special blood that they need... d halfnote
Sharkman, so b/c an agency earned some money after the costly expense of collecting blood for the general benefit of society, which is just one of the many efforts the make (such as free housing for fire/flood victims, etc), you want to dis them like they somehow ripped you off ? No wonder yer "Sharkman" . d=halfnote

No wonder yer "Sharkman" . Heh! Sure, if he wants to, he can SELL his blood at one of those plasma centers springing up all over. But they no longer pay cash. They give you a CARD(much like a gift or debit card) that I notice isn't accepted most anywhere. Plus, he's gotta step over all those previous "donors" lounging at the front door holding tight onto the wine bottles in paper bags. For nearly 30 years I gave blood whenever the bloodmobile showed up at the plant. The sight of my GALLON PINS used to annoy the hell out of my Jehovah Witness cousin. jimmac
O positive here. The B neg is pretty rare I think. I car pool with a lady that is B negative and is on a transplant list. Keep hoping she will get lucky. Jim
surfergirl
I imagine it has been an expensive year for the Red Cross. Fires, mudslides, hurricanes in the US and the humanitarian crisises around the world. I won't fault them to much if they make some money selling blood. According to their website the American Red Cross helps 181 million people outside of US every year. 1 in 25 people around the globe receive aid from the Red Cross. Jennifer S.
