NGD: ERMAGERD!

My year in gear has been pretty damn good. Some nice pedals (no, I didn't do any NGDs for them), and a few good-to-stellar guitars.

And the most recent acquisition ranks among the best I own. It is a RockBeach RB-T, made by our very own Gregory "Boggs" Bogoshian. It arrived the same day as my Reverend Manta Ray 390, solve been going back and forth between them the past few weeks.

The body is the last from a huge slab of Claro walnut. Originally bought for one guitar, the slab was so big, Boggs figured he actually had enough wood for 2 guitars. I said I was going to ask what he was going to do with the leftover wood, and hadn't even considered the possibility of making 2. He said he would give me a special deal. Then he said he had just started making his own version of the Telecaster. I didn't have ANY t-style guitars in my collection, so then I said, "Well, then, let's make 2 guitars."

(The first one was a CamelBack CB-III, which he made me last year, NGD here: https://forums.musicplayer.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/2534815/1 )

Well, when I opened up the case, the first thing that hit me AFTER its looks was a smell. It smelled of fresh cut wood and spice. Well, I KNEW the guitar had a finish on it, so I contacted Boggs about it...

He said, "The body core wood was the Kelela I (finally!!) convinced you to go with and is a significant part of the spicy smell. It is from the South Pacific. Also, the Port Orford Cedar neck will contribute some of that as well as the pistachio fingerboard. The pickup bezels were made from the small bits of leftover AAAAA Birdseye Maple that was used in the midsection of last year's RockBeach guitar."

Well, there you go- it is one part guitar, one part potpourri!

One thing about this second project was I wanted to really make it mine. I asked him to incorporate a Fleur-de-Lis motif onto the guitar, somewhere, somehow. I suggested that he could get the pickup covers engraved at Greasygroove.com. He said he'd look into it and also discuss things with his finish guy.

So I was a little disappointed when I noticed the utter lack of engraved pickup covers. Then, as I turned the guitar around for the photographs, I noticed that his finish guy had worked a subtle magic. Instead of what I suggested, he had incorporated little FdLs all over the guitar's body in the finish with slightly different color/texture/transparencies in what he used. They're nearly invisible straight on, but as you move around, you can see them.

And the pickups? The original idea was to have a HB in the bridge and a HB-sized P90 in the neck, and to kind of emulate early hot-rods. It was to be somewhat subtle in appearance, but with a lot of power under the hood. So l was going with BareKnuckles- probably a Nailbomb & Stockholm. But a guy over at Ultimate-guitar.com going by the screen named MrFlibble hipped me onto The Creamery, and after a few emails back & forth with them, their Dirty Shirt HB and HBS P90 got the nod. (Still thinking about that BareKnuckle combo for something else, though.)

Let me tell you: pickups like these are what you expect when you buy boutique. Tuned to NST (CGDAEG), I ran through surf, prog, classic rock, Latino-rock and metal progressions, and the guitar killed with every one. The articulation is precise. The tones & harmonics are stellar. When I want clean, I get CLEAN. When I want punch, HULK SMASH!

So there it is, one of the early RB-Ts!

This is the third guitar I own with P90s, all purchased within the past year or so, I have to say I have been deeply impressed with the tone that they deliver, and wonder that I haven't tried them out sooner.

I mean, I know that some (not all) of my surf, space, spy & reggae idols use(d) standard singlecoils quite often, but it sounds to me like I can get closer to what I hear on some classic recordings using my P90 axes. There's just more tone to play with.

This is the culmination of a 2 year, 2 guitar voyage with Boggs. I have to say that I have no reservations about his skill, and would definitely recommend anyone consider him if they're looking for something a little different.

The only thing I DON'T like about this axe is the PICK-UPS....But not them in particular, but rather that light colored wooden BED they each seem to be sitting on. Looks more like CORK, and detracts from the overall nice aestetic of the instrument. Would look better if just the pick-ups against the body WITHUOT the little "seat".

I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!

I would have to see it in person before making any judgement on the pickup surrounds...they look cool to me as is but they could always be changed and I'm sure Boggs would accommodate any idea you come could come up with Danny if [you] wanted them changed. I would consider matching the pistachio or Kelela. I might even consider more chrome with the naked lady trucker or some flames in the design since it is a HOT ROD!

Thank you, guys, for the kind words and the feedback. The pickup bezels were made from some "leftover" AAAAA birdseye maple that was used in the midsection of the first guitar I built for him. I used it as an artistic "tie" to that first guitar. The contrast with the top wood was spectacular in that first guitar and it DEFINITELY draws attention to the player on stage. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and your mileage may vary, but that was the thought behind the choice to use the birdseye for the bezels. To make sure they were a little different, I used a different orientation for the top and back Claro from the original guitar as well. The bottom of the guitar shows the Kelela coloration looking like it was almost bleeding... almost like "road rash"... Pretty spectacular!
