I heard Chester play solo at Bob Scleicher's birthday party in Oakland a couple years ago. I expressed to him that I hoped that he would be getting out and doing some non- Santana type gigs. So it looks like that is finally happening.

I hope the community supports him in this and that he continues to play out doing what he wants to do.

I also hope that Tower of Power invites him to "sit in" from time to time. I haven't seen their anniversary DVD yet but he must have been part of that. He really set the standard for funk organ during that time with them.

I kind of felt that he was buried in Santana, perhaps that was a part of why he isn't there now.... I don't really know.

It's going to be an awesome show. Lots of great organ greats are in town just for this show. It's actually a Dr Lonnie Smith tribute - he'll be inducted in the organ hall of fame.

Dave, I sent you a pm awhile back - did you get it?

I probably can't do anything before the gig but would love to see you guys.

Cool. I am definitely going to be there, and Audrey is trying to cancel some appointments so that she can join me.

I have a funny feeling that the music will sound somewhat better than the Youtube that Moe posted above. ;)

Wow. What a great show this was! The last set was Chester Thompson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, together on two B3's, with Chester's smokin' band -- Ron E. Beck on drums. Whew!

Got to meet Brian (aka bhodaway10) in person for the first time too. Very cool. :thu:

Yesterday was a great concert. I was talking to Pete today and we both agreed it was a night that people would talk about forever.

The house was packed with tons of organists, musicians, etc. Chester Smith played first, then several organists were inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame, then Chester Thompson played, Lonnie got his award, and the finale was Chester Thompson and Lonnie playing two numbers - Willow Weep for Me in 6 (like Lonnie's record) and If You see Kay aka Pay It Back.

Chester Thompson's set was very cool. He started with Wayne Shorter's Speak No Evil and then ended the set with Squib Cakes.

Wil didn't play but was in the audience. Today is his birthday.

The whole concert was definitely recorded and shot in video (multiple cameras). I'll ask Pete if he's going to release it.
