  1. True. Their behavior says more about THEM, than it says about WHO they're bashing... Old No7
  2. Very well said! As Mark Twain also said: "Don't let college get in the way of your education!" It's not an "either, or" situation; I think Rick's videos and analysis could actually encourage students to seek more music education. Having options, and creating excitement in and an interest in music and music education is a GREAT thing! And if he makes a few bucks doing it -- well, good for him! Old No7
  3. I do enjoy his videos -- and Mike Rowe is correct, his enthusiasm is contagious; coupled with his musical knowledge and industry insights, he's interesting to watch. Thanks for sharing. Old No7
  4. Really well done! ~ Ambitious undertaking too ~ (I'd suspect the original was done by 2 or 3 band members...) I'm thinking if you add any more boards to your studio, you might need two more left feet! Old No7
  5. Excellent -- thanks for making this available to others! Old No7
  6. Great story -- and an even greater inspiration! Thanks for sharing the story and images. Old No7
  7. BEST internet posting of the week! I take my SK Pro 73 out -- but I'll cry for sure if anything happens................ Old No7
  8. Thanks for the heads up! FYI, you can get 2- or 3-paks of those from ebay for less (per each), shipping included. Old No7
  9. "Wooden Ships" (below). From an old Irish proverb: “There are good ships and wood ships, ships that sail the sea; but the best ships are friendships, and may they always be,” Old No7
  10. Had to add this -- just saw it elsewhere... Old No7
  11. It won't -- they only open up a small pocket to put the new lens into. When they fixed my detached retina -- by cutting into the eye, inserting the gas bubble, and then laser-welding the edge of the retina and welding the eye closed -- they also flushed out all the floaters that were in there (leftover from the partial tear I'd had many years earlier). That surgery is risky (5% chance of total vision loss!), but in the end they saved 99% of my sight (with just a slight loss where the retina was welded and has some scar tissue) -- and I would have lost 100% if they did nothing, so it was a no-brainer for me to get it done. But it's a good thing I never got pulled over by the cops afterwards, as the iris in that eye was >3/8" for 2 months and took another 4 months after that to gradually return to its normal operation, as the scarring and laser work were so close to the nerves that control the iris. I'm told there is a procedure they do for the "eye flush", but except for injecting the gas bubble (which my retina needed to secure it), I believe it's pretty similar to the work they did on me -- but it is risky, as noted above. I wouldn't recommend it (and neither do my docs), unless the floaters & webs are so bad you can't function. Good luck to all! Old -- and happy to be getting older -- No7
  12. I sure hope this doesn't turn into one of those "Well, if you were a real musician, you'd roll up your sleeves and use your ears to learn how to do it, just like how we learned back in the 60's & 70's -- and not just ask here..." But since it's about MIDI (1.0 released in 1983) -- maybe not... Anyway, I'm an old-school keyboardist who has 3 boards, all with MIDI capabilities that sits unused so far. I'm pretty sure there's actually a book by the above title, but I'm also pretty sure that's not the best place for me to start. And there may be some informative videos over on youtube to help too. That said, can anyone suggest a good introductory book or guide to start my journey into the "How To" of MIDI? Thanks in advance. Old No7
  13. Gotta add another comment... My wife's younger brother died suddenly and way too young at age 50... Ever since then, my motto is... "Getting old" is better than NOT getting old! Cheers! Old No7
  14. Well, our eye docs obviously disagree... I wanted both eyes done on the same day, and they would not do it. For me, the 1st cataract was great -- 20/15 vision on the checkup the next morning. 2 weeks later, I suffered a detached retina and was legally blind for 3 weeks while the surgery healed and the gas bubble they injected (to push the retina back and keep its shape) was absorbed. That eye had a torn retina 12 years earlier, but I was told the FDA reports a <5% risk of detached retina following cataract surgery. My risk was obviously higher -- year, like 100%! Still, due to potential higher risk in the other eye, they made me wait 3 months to do the 2nd eye (which was the better of the two, luckily), so I just went without glasses for those months. No problems with reading music charts, or anything -- as long as it's an arms-length on out; anything closer or with small print, and I do use cheaters. But that's OK, as I wore glasses for 58 years anyway, and I'm enjoying being glasses-free for the most part of the day. Lastly, everyone I know who got the multi-focal lenses complains about the hazards of driving at night, especially on a rainy night. One of my best friends claims he lost 50% of his night vision due to those lenses, and he won't/can't drive at night any more. A few folks get multi-focal in one eye and fixed in the other, and they say it works, but it took many months to train their brain & eyes to use that setup. As a boater, hunter and target shooter, I wanted the sharpest distance vision I could get. Old No7
  15. Not here in Maine -- you can be asked to show documentation for a service dog, and/or any other mutt being passed off as a service dog -- without documentation -- can result in misdemeanor charges being filed. One can buy "service dog" vests on fleabay even if it's not legit. As for me, my Black Lab provides great emotional support. And his name (really!) is "Jack Daniels". And if he's not allowed where I stay, then I bring the other Jack! Old No7
  16. Interesting -- Can you tell us which brand/model has worked the best for you? Thanks! Old No7
  17. I sold off my RD-88, but +1 to those tips -- as that's just what I would have said. Search this forum -- and on Google too, as there's some helpful tips and tricks out there if you look for them. The manual isn't all that great (it's written in "Rolandese", I suspect) and some of those posts will give you much clearer instructions on how to do things. Edit to add: Search for all the free and available downloads on the Roland website too, as I recall there were long and large lists of all the scenes and tones, and parameters. Old No7
  18. My wife suffers with this and her ENT recently said there is "nothing he can do to help her" -- but then he tried to sell her some VERY EXPENSIVE ** hearing aids (that she does NOT need) which would be programmed to add in some white noise to "mask" the tinnitus. With the white noise added, yeah, then she probably WOULD need the help of hearing aids. ......... ** Sure sounds like he is trying harder to HELP HIMSELF (to my money, that is!!!!) Her decision ? ? ? She's going to try acupuncture for 6 weeks, to see if that offers her any relief. I will keep you all posted. Old No7
  19. Me too, after reading all the posts above. 😉 That's very appropriate for this; as he wouldn't be getting the flack he's getting on this forum if he'd stayed in his lane. Old No7
  20. A search on this forum for this song title came up empty... (Except for EVH playing it on guitar...) I'm currently exploring the sounds from my SK Pro to perform the iconic "Won't Get Fooled Again" synthesized Lowrey organ sound from this just-as-iconic song by the Who (some say he used a Hammond, and one video shows him playing it with one). Anyhow, the SK has an organ patch called "Wont Get Fooled" and it's pretty close, but it needs some tweaks. It has the square-wave tremolo set at the correct depth and rate -- which matches up exactly with the BPM of the song when I play it from my iPhone -- and it has an Ace organ tone as the foundation. I've played around some using the Farfisa or Hammond tones, and still haven't settled on "the" organ sound I will use yet . But I did add a flanger effect to help enhance the sound, but I'm finding, to my ear at least, that it's missing the sound of the filter sweep... * Has anyone added a polyphonic synth tone -- which could have a filter sweep added in time to complement the tremolo (maybe every 4 beats), as controlled by the LFO -- and allocating that into the mix with the organ sound? I haven't gotten to test it yet, but it seems it could do what I want. * Or are there another SK Pro options and/or settings to play with? Thanks in advance for any ideas! Old No7 ps: "Won't" get fooled is the title, yet the lyrics of the song say "Don't" get fooled... And our drummer asked me why??? My thoughts are that the title is a statement by the band, saying that they "won't" get fooled again; and when they sing it, they're telling the listener to "don't" get fooled again.
  21. Not related to any one selling site, but when I sold a Mojo 61 recently it arrived at the buyer's home in great shape. What I did to better protect it was -- to double box it -- and luckily I had the extra cardboard to do it. It was put in a decent padded gig bag with some bubble wrap around it, and taped in a cardboard box. Then using cheap lengths of pipe insulation for padding, I built a second cardboard box encasing the first one and the insulation. Yeah, it added some dimensions to the box shipped, but very little weight -- and oh, the seller "did not have fun" unpacking it -- but it arrived undamaged. (I also shipped the pedals and cables/cords etc. in a separate box.) I have some smaller gear to sell and will test both Reverb and Gear Exchange to see what's best for me. Old No7
  22. True, that was called naugacide. It was also because the remaining naugas learned to hide really well, causing even more shortages of naugahyde due to naugahide. Old No7
  23. So... Be weird back at 'em. Make the commitment, go there and play it -- not just for 5 minutes. Be prepared with cash $$ or a U.S. Postal money order in case you DO want it. (Not made out to them, you can cash it made out to yourself if you don't use it.) If you DON'T want it, still pretend that you do and whip out an obviously faked money order -- and let them refuse your payment... Act a little disappointed and leave... Be sure to ask "why they're selling it" a couple of different ways, to different folks if there's more than one... See if the stories align. Old No7
