  1. I'be been there, and continue to learn how not to beat myself up over these things. Either 1) I made the best decision I could given the information I had available at the time, or 2) I suspect I didn't do that. Regarding the former, wishful thinking is no reason to beat ourselves up. Who wouldn't have bought Amazon stock at the beginning if we only knew! With the latter -- either not doing something I think I should have, or vice versa -- I try to figure out what to take from it all. Maybe, for example, I should not have let some little thing bother me and stop me from otherwise doing something I wanted. It still catches me off guard, though, when sometimes the only way to learn what we want for ourselves is to first learn what we don't want.
  2. Just watched the Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jam from 2018 on AXS. Lots of fun... Chuck Leavell played piano/B3 as part of the "house band," supporting many of the performers, and even sang a verse on Blue Sky. As a huge bonus, the keyboards were mixed so you could actually hear them most of the time!
  3. The word "hacks" as a replacement for "tips," etc., is now annoyingly everywhere, including music, such as: https://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifestyle/6-clever-music-hacks-that-speed-learning.html
  4. Must be the control panel in the Yellow Submarine. Ringo looks like he's worried he might accidentally launch a torpedo
  5. I have the Baby Spider Pro and like it quite a bit. It's a little bulky to carry, but not too bad. I also have the K&M bag designed for the stand, but I'm not a big fan. It's a little flimsy, and the handles are too long to allow it to be carried easily, but they don't work over the shoulder either. I think I'm going to look for a different bag when this one gives out. A bag that can be carried like a backpack would be great with this stand.
  6. Did anybody see Yanni on Impactical Jokers? I"ll give him this; He was a good sport [video:youtube]
  7. Thanks, very helpful! (Fortunately, in my non-professional setting, i don"t go anywhere near 66 tracks! )
  8. OK, thanks. So if you record such that each channel has peaks near zero, when mixing you would have to bring down the individual channel levels so the overall peaks don't get too hot. Is there a downside to doing it this way?
  9. I rookie mistake I make that I didn't know I was making! I also learned in the analogue days. Why doesn't this work right in the digital domain?
  10. Yes, agree, I use exactly the same thing. Being able to charge the iPad while using USB is quite useful.
  11. I finally had a chance to put my P-121 through its paces with an iPad connected (via a single cable into the USB to Host connector on the P-121). Since some folks have been wondering on a couple of other threads about how well this combination worked, I thought I"d report what I foundâ¦. In a nutshell, from what I"ve seen so far, the connectivity and MIDI implement worked exactly how I would want. When using GarageBand, for example, the P-121 MIDI data (velocity, sustain, etc) found its way into the app with little effort on my part. In return, the GarageBand audio (from its sound generation engine) flowed into the P-121 and on through its headphones/speakers. iRealPro worked great too. For those not familiar with this app: the user creates a chord chart and enters other pertinent information, such as time signature, tempo, type of music, etc. Besides being able to create and read the charts, the app can generate a basic drum, bass and/or piano accompaniment based on the inputed chords and other information. When used with the P-121, the app"s audio flowed into the P-121, allowing me to play a keyboard part (using the P-121 sounds) accompanied by bass and drums, with all sounds coming through the keyboard"s speakers/headphones. It was actually pretty cool. The volume control slider on the P-121 simultaneously controls the P-121"s and app"s output. Thus the right mix is achieved by adjusting the volume of the app/iPad. Also, if the goal is to play a voice from an app by itself (without the P-121 sounding), a simple key combination on the P-121 toggles between Local Control on and off. More info about the MIDI implementation can be found here (under 'Manuals'): P-121/5 downloads If I missed something of interest, let me know and I"ll see if I can check it out.
  12. Netflix's "The Eddy" is a good eight-part series and has some excellent Jazz. All the music, and there's a lot, is played live during the recording by real musicians. The music is quite good! I read that they were thinking of taking the band used in the movie on the road, but coronavirus changed all that...
  13. This is an interesting thread. Replying requires introspection, and that is quite useful in it's own right... I feel more comfortable with an improvisational approach than, for example, playing classical or even trying to play note-for-note from blues/rock recordings. (I do, however, try to play note-for-note with signature lines or where I can't think of something of my own to do.) I like a lot of Jazz music but don't have the chops for that; when I retire, I'd like to explore this more just for my personal enjoyment. I'm more of a blues-based keys player. I work to play melodically, though, not just run through scales. It can be challenging sometimes, but it gets the creative juices flowing. I like including elements of rock and "funky old soul", and currently play in a blues/classic rock/southern rock band. If possible, I'd like to eventually play with more straight-up blues players. Perhaps not surprisingly, I play more meat-and-potatoes keys, very little synth. My Nord Electro 5 is a pretty good fit -- perhaps somewhat too little in the synth department, but the Stage 3 is probably a little too much (meaning, I didn't want to spend that much given that I probably wouldn't get the most out of its synth).
  14. Yes, I find this useful too, though I only have the basic, no cost version. When my iPhone finally died a few years ago, I went to the store, bought a new one, and, via iCloud, they completely rebuilt "my" phone, with everything just the way I had it on the previous one.
  15. I also use the iPad as a complementary device, as sometimes it can be less fun to navigate with the iPad. Fortunately, though, it does everything I need for gigs. For home use, I use a Mac. And I also agree that the filesystem navigation can sometimes be a hassle. I've actually never been a fan of the way Apple stores files.
  16. I have a 9.7 inch iPad 6th gen, wi-fi only, 32 GB. 32 GB is plenty for me -- I don't store many audio or video files on the iPad. And wifi is fine for my needs. In fact, our singer has a wireless IEM system that we use, and I was able to download an app that allows me to control the mix I receive via wifi.
  17. I have an iPad that I'm very happy with. I can use garage band, yamaha's smart piano, irealpro, forScore, and other apps with no problems. Connects to my Yamaha P-121 with no problems. I would definitely got with it again.
  18. I saw a Steely Dan tribute band. They had eleven musicians. Sounded awesome, the music was faithful to the original. Wow, that sounds impressive. Wouldn't mind seeing something like that myself.
  19. I think a Steely Dan tribute band would be cool. Love the music. However, given the calibre of musicians that played on the originals, I think that would break the ground rule that "you'd have no trouble finding other musicians"!
  20. With the P-125, you can play back audio from an iPad through the USB connection
  21. Scott, that's interesting. I assume that, before going back into the MIDI in, you'd have to combine the MIDI data with that from another controller for pitch bend etc.
  22. Dan - it"s admirable to be prioritizing your kids at this difficult time. Although it can make things even more challenging at this point, it"ll also make it all more rewarding in the end.
  23. I also have the P121, and am quite happy with it. It has a very nice action for the size and weight. The AP sounds nice -- the rest of the sounds are a mixed bag. But it works well with the iPad to help make up for that. I don't use the speakers, though, so I can't comment on that.
