  1. I caught them at a UMASS spring concert around '94. It was just about the time they started playing instruments on stage IIRC. I distinctly remember the long curly cable MCA was using with his bass - at the time that was SUPER retro. They were amazing live (Except Ad-Rock yelled "Thank you New Jersey!" - I couldn't tell if that was some kind of gag, or if in fact he really thought he was in New Jersey.)
  2. I remember hearing a similar sample on Tangerine Dream's Melrose, but that was a few years after So. I don't recall earlier TG albums where it was used (but I'm sure it must have been).
  3. Just curious (cause I see a lot of players on youtube with Nord Stage keyboards that are primarily being used as controllers for Mainstage) - Are you leaning towards digging into Mainstage again because there are shortcomings with the Nord Stage? I often wonder if people are leaving a lot of horsepower and functionality on the table when they incorporate virtual instruments into rigs with already robust hardware. (I realize I may have opened a can of worms here.)
  4. Mine varies based on the gig, but whenever I can bring my Gemini/DMC122, I am happy. Over 10 years use and it's just as useful now as ever. If I have more than a couple piano tunes, I like to have an 88 key board (currently the K2700). Piano on the DMC is NO fun. I've tried introducing VI approaches to my rig (Macbook, and 2 different iPads). I keep coming to the same conclusion - for live gigs, I am a hardware guy. I just don't like working with a computer/tablet to facilitate my playing. Next, I'd like to add a dedicated monosynth like the PolyD, or something simliar.
  5. Thanks to @Dave Weiser for completely hijacking my week by exposing me to this band. I am hooked.
  6. When I had an E-III, I had the full set of factory CD-ROMs the shakuhachi was in there and it sounded amazing. There were a lot of incredible samples in there as well, including a haunting waterphone.
  7. I appreciate anyone putting effort into the "Show" of a gig. As a young musician, I was adamant that the music should do ALL the talking. I've changed on that quite a bit. Gimme something to look at while I'm enjoying the tunes.
  8. Mummy funk - now I've seen it all. At least they don't have to spend time worrying about what to wear on gig nights.
  9. I'll add to that, the process of customer segmentation. No manufacturer wants to cannibalize their sales by selling a $1500 product to someone who will spend $2500. Ideally any manufacturer wants to maximize potential sales within each segment.
  10. I assure you, in pool, I am equally bad with a broomstick as I am with a pool cue.
  11. No, but a shitty house DI can possibly make the last mile sound worse. I've had it happen and totally ruined a gig for me. Bought my own Radial Pro D2. At the very least, I don't worry about my signal to the board on gigs anymore. $200 for 2 channels is definitely worth the piece of mind. *Note: by shitty, I mean a club/house DI that has been used and abused. Had beer spilled on it. Fallen off stages. And the like.
  12. I have an old whirlwind DI that cost $80. Had it for 20 years and it works fine. I don't think $250 on a DI is a waste though. If you have a $1k-$4K instrument, how much sense does it make to cheap out in the last mile?
  13. OK - I read this wrong and assumed you were going XLR out of the PC4 (then I was baffled because PC4 does not have XLR out). So, it looks like you have 1/4 TRS to XLR cables going to your PA. I'm not a fan of those types of cables over just using a DI. Having 1/4 thru on my DIs is always a nice option if I want to run my own powered monitor.
  14. If you are using 1/4" outs to a DI, to your PA, the level shouldn't be significantly louder than any other line level keyboard. I'm wondering if the XLRs are inherently hotter? I'm assuming there's no pad on the channel inputs of the PA. Maybe the mic pres on the board are adding something? My K2700 isn't any hotter than my other boards (running 1/4 to a DI). As an aside, my Radial Dual DI is the once piece of my rig that I would replace instantly if lost or broken. I never use house DIs.
  15. I had to look that up. I never knew Wendy was born Walter and transitioned. But I imagine it wasn't quite so public back then.
  16. Ahh - missed that. Apologies for the kurfuffle.
  17. Go figure - I must be on some kind of watch list!
  18. I was thinking the same. Thus, I'll be inserting random words in all my posts henceforth. Stool Endoscopy Thermonuclear Those are all good.
  19. In responding to another thread, apparently a rather benign word I used was deemed a violation of forum/platform rules. According to Webster's dictionary: Is this some kind of programming error, or do the geniuses in Silicon Valley assume I'm referencing Native Americans in some way? (Which....I still fail to see why that word would be a violation of anything.) Is this Google Gemini trying to protect us?
  20. Mine is also a bit on the loud side. Nothing distracting, but I notice it. I wonder if there's bushings that can be replaced. I have no concerns about opening it and doing my own maintenance.
  21. Would that also mean no audio passthrough via USB? I'm finding that incredibly useful on the K2700 with my iPad.
  22. Sounds like the 88 version is positioned somewhere between the PC4 and K2700?? UI looks the same. The drawbar inspired fader colors are a nice touch. https://www.gearnews.com/kurzweil-k2061-k2088/
  23. Nameboard or Fallboard strip is correct. Also could be called the Fallstrip. ( I had to go back and look at my text book from my piano restoration class in college!)
  24. There is definitely a learning curve. I too assumed It would be intuitive enough to just figure out on my own (using iPad version). I got lost quickly. I will say, I emailed support with my setup and what I was trying to achieve and they responded with a detailed email containing marked up pics and directions. I was amazed - great support. (FYI - once I learned how to use MIDI Thru connectors and advanced channel routing on my layers, things started to make sense) Edit: To answer your question about accessing the GUI for your instruments - this is absolutely doable on the iPad version, so I assume it is possible on the PC version.
  25. The Genuine Soudware Gemini has a nice modelled Pipe organ. It sounds great to me, but I don't have enough real knowledge of pipe-organs to rate its authenticity. "...we chose to offer a Baroque-style organ based on a single manual and 9 stops plus 3 couplers and the classic "tremulant" effect. This synth engine works as an hybrid synthesizer, uses additive synthesis and physical modeling, there are no samples involved. The expression pedal responds naturally and varies the amount of air that passes through the pipes. There is a total of 776 virtual pipes." https://www.genuinesoundware.com/?a=showproduct&b=43
