  1. JP8 was what, about $5k at the time? That's roughly $15k in today's dollars!
  2. My first "real" keyboard. The architecture was completely foreign and impossible to program for someone who was still just learning basic analog synth signal flow. Built like a tank and the only keyboard I ever had with an installed power cord. It was never a great option as a dedicated instrument, but could layer nicely or compliment a sampler or analog synth in a rig. I was much happier when I sold it for my DSS-1.
  3. Agreed. I had one that I paired with my DX-7. The keybed feel was about as uninspiring as the sound. and the wheels were pretty wonky feeling. I never ran it through any FX, so I'm sure a chorus and delay would have helped. I'm not sure if this was common for synths of that day, but plugging in a 1/4" while the keyboard was powered on could result in a nasty shock!!
  4. Slight OT tangent: I listen to Craig Garber's podcast "Everybody Loves Guitar" (He interviews a ton of big names and well accomplished supporting musicians - not all guitarists either). One of the most common threads for many of the most successful career musicians is supportive parents. Not necessarily just financial support either - often just acceptance was enough. Steve Lukather tells a great story in his book how he took the usual Saturday trip to the music store with his dad and when it came time to leave, he discovered that his dad bought him the gear he was demoing. He knew it was a financial stretch and a sacrifice for him and understood the importance and value of that.
  5. Please tell me you had a cape and platform boots (And a roadie).
  6. My 70s rig had wheels for easy transport to my various household gigs.
  7. A good friend of mine, who gigs all the time and has has played countless grands, as well as a variety of weighted boards over the years, just picked up a PX-5S last year. He raves about it. Absolutely loves that board.
  8. I'll stand occasionally, but much prefer sitting. I'm tall and standing frankly feels too exposed - like I'm towering over the other performers. Pedal management is def easier while sitting as well. I do like the high stool setups, a la Tony Banks tho. Good middle ground. I always max out the height of my throne.
  9. Funny - I was just looking at a Facebook memory from 9 years ago of me playing a gig with my DMC/Gemini. I can't believe I've had it that long. What a great tool this has been in my toolbox. Still going strong!
  10. Extra credit for the Steely Dan drop!
  11. The waveform in a DCO is still technically analog, it's just controlled digitally, hence the "dual analog oscillator" description.
  12. I just picked up GSI D6. I don't really need another clav, but the iPad app will come in handy for rehearsals where I'm just bringing the iPad and a controller. So far, it is very good - sounds just like my Gemini (which I love for clav). GSI also has several other apps on discount. I may also pick-up the Drum-80 as well.
  13. I'd be interested to hear it compared to other modern "recreations", like the OB-6.
  14. I totally get how business practices can influence buying decisions. 20 plus years ago I stopped buying anything from Monster Cable based primarily on their uber aggressive tactic to sue anyone having anything to do with the word "Monster". That put more than one small company out of business. (Oh, and they were overpriced cables that frequently shit the bed....so there was that.) At the end of the day, I voted with my dollar and stopped buying from them. I'm not familiar with how Behringer operates, other than they are making copies/clones/tributes of older gear. That alone doesn't bother me, as there are countless instrument copies (e.g. strat, les paul, et al) in the market that most seem fine with. But, I'm thinking there is more to the story (I'll look it up. Not trying to de-rail this thread).
  15. Behringer topics can def be polarizing. Even in your response, you are quick to defend your opinion of the sound, then go right to disparaging their marketing material and referring to Uli as an Overlord. I can see where someone might interpret that as having a proclivity towards disliking Behringer.
  16. I'm curious if the sound has been updated since the videos that came out about a year ago. I recall not being overly impressed at that time with what I was hearing. Certainly this sounds better to my ears, but that could just be the FX.
  17. I play frequent album cover gigs. While I do listen to the original recordings, I often look for samples of how the original band covered the work live. That tends to be more interesting and a good reminder that it doesn't always need to sound JUST like the album. I figure the more creative license the original band takes live, the more comfortable I am doing the same.
  18. Well, now it's our duty as GAS addicts to push you toward questionable decisions.
  19. I would expect not...just from a pricing standpoint (Which I can't touch at $5k). I agree with others here, it would have been better if it was a uniquely branded synth, rather than a copy. Remove the stripes, name it the the PolyB-80 and then we have a much different discussion going.
  20. Looks like $3K US for the Vortex https://kraftmusic.com/products/viscount-legend-vortex-315-rotary-keyboard-amplifier-black?utm_source=google&utm_medium=merchant&utm_campaign=vis-vortex315&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAx_GqBhBQEiwAlDNAZuoGdm-d1ygpdGV7NnrcRaiGvHdq3vRUZPEfwQU6xgOSABW-gSdRbhoCrKAQAvD_BwE
  21. At this point, this is like GnR's Chinese Democracy. I'll believe it when I see it! Though, this looks promising. Frankly, the VA engine in the K2700 has all the poly goodness I'd ever need, so it'd be a luxury spend at best for me. Happy to see 5 octaves though!
  22. I've been enjoying this app. Def worth the spend. If you want the MKS Piano sound, this is a good way to scratch that itch. I've gotten some beefy synth brass stacks out of it as well. I wouldn't use it as a dedicated piano module, but I have blended with other piano sounds and it is great for that. I have no need to use it as an AU host, but it plays nicely with Camelot and the interface is well laid out and it maps easily to external controllers.
  23. First there was the Motif. Then came the Montage. Now, introducing The Montez-7
