  1. As an owner of both Arturia and Logics B3's, they are definitely both different. I seem to be completely at odds with some other opinions here about the Logic B3; I find that it's pretty ballsy and has a lot more gain in the Leslie speaker cab model than Arturia or the Nord. To get the Nord and Arturia really dirty you need in the case of Arturia to add a pedal or for the Nord add an amp. The Arturia model is very noisy and I frequently need to add a gate to it. I also used to use a Hammond XK3c (still have it, just don't gig with it anymore) and I thought it had completely different qualities than the models. Much glassier and pretty, but it just didn't get into Jon Lord territory very easily.
  2. To me the Nefertiri is almost a cross between a Wurli and a Rhodes. The bells/tines/sparkly tones are way subdued or even absent in the lower registers.
  3. I complained about the reffing..but I don't thing it would have made a difference. VGK was clearly a better team in that matchup and it's now coming out that a lot of the Panther's stars were playing very hurt. Ekblad broke a foot in game 1. Tkachuk had a broken sternum. Both had to clear concussion protocols at one point. Gudas had a high ankle sprain (I don't even know how you play at all with one of those). The first round had so many upsets. I ran a bracket challenge for my beer league team and it was really a crapshoot. Literally...I did a totally random one as a joke and it would have gotten second place. I don't think anyone picked FLA to be in the finals, let alone make it past Boston.
  4. Sometimes...you just gotta let the boys have a little brawl. Panthers sending a message for game 5 and their fans are disappointed by the reffing. That last tripping call Stone drew...right after he'd obviously slashed the stick out of a Panther players hand was frustrating. I could see the slash being a no-call, but then the trip should have been a no call too. Giving Tkachuk 36 penalty minutes in the first two games? Letting Stone do whatever he wants? But then I start watching the NBA and I realize...it's the same damn thing. The refs can call a couple little fouls early in a game and make a star sit out minutes with foul trouble. NBA refs are just as flexible.
  5. On a different subject...this might go down as the worst reffed series in years. The referee's in game 1 and 2 totally emasculated the Panthers and I think they have no idea where the actual line is between stupid penalty and no-call. Vegas actually seemed like the more physical team the last couple games.
  6. There were two expansion teams running deep into the playoffs. VGK is 1 game away from winning it all. The biggest issue with hockey is very few have ever played the sport or even put on skates. It's a tough game to understand if you've never played it. But personally, there's no better sport to watch in person. But then again...I still play, and all my kids played, so we have a different perspective.
  7. The only thing that could make this song any sadder
  8. Well...not tonight it wasn't. Congrats to Las Vegas. On paper this looks like a hum dinger of a final. I would think most money is on Florida, but you never know until the teams actually meet.
  9. I like the Keyscape Rhodes (and there's several) but not the Wurli. They seem a little clunky and have a bit of all the mechanical noises baked in. I'm Probably spoiled by the Kurzweil Wurli's with IMHO the Nord being a close second. The Rhodes sound is so broad...there's a lot of choices and they each have their place depending on the song. Although the Rhodes that comes with Mainstage isn't amazing, I've found that, in a live setting, it sometimes works really well even though it's probably the least realistic of all the VST or instrument choices that I have.
  10. Does it sound like you're cheating? That's my razor. Did you just not try to get the vibe that made the original a song you wanted to copy? If you headed in a completely different direction, then cool! if it works. In summary, don't get caught in the middle. Either sound like you made a professional effort to capture the original emotion of the song, or take it in a different direction, but don't sound like a lazy version of a popular song. I do love it when an iconic riff or solo is played very close to the original, but I also love the artist who takes you somewhere unexpected, even if it arrives at the same destination.
  11. In a lot of modern music where the drums are written by non-drummers on a computer, there's a distinct reduction in the amount of crashes...like, almost no crashes. Not to mention that even in music recorded with real drummers the crashes are typically not near as loud as drummers think they need to be in a live room.
  12. I'm also a guitar player. Some of the guitar solos that I have absolutely loved over the years are by Billy Gibbons and David Gilmour. When it came time to learn them I was absolutely shocked by how pentatonic they are. Scale-wise, they are not ambitious at all. But what I learned by playing their solos is that the scale is but one small part of the solo. Billy Gibbons almost seems to favor rhythm over scale. David Gilmour is the master of getting that bend just into the right place and then making it soak into the song, but he can also be funky an make the hook of a riff stick with you. I think as keyboard players, including myself when playing keyboards, think too much about scale and note choices, when there are so many other factors to a solo besides the scale or mode. So to tie it back to the OP. Yes! absolutely! If it sounds good it's never wrong. The scale or mode alone is never what is making that phrase sound the way it is. It is also the rhythm and an any other subtleties that you can attach to it, and the context that it lays over, and where it leads to the next context. I feel like I wrote that way better than I actually solo...but I stand behind it.
  13. That's a great work around. I typically have Mainstage open right next to my Nord, so that will work great. And probably give me a little mor SA on what's available.
  14. Received a NS4 73 and finally got it set up to play. The action is definitely different from the NS3 88. Better? I don't know. A little livelier? It's got a little more bounce in a snappy (not mushy) kind of way. One major ass pain is the users guitde is on version 1.0 but the current firmware is still on 0.98. And one of the things yet to be implemented is the category search for the synth presets, making this feature essentially worthless until implemented. Some of the youtube reviewers clearly have v1.0 and it's frustrating to not have their capability yet. The effects section is a massive quantum leap forward. Not just in the number of layers, but in the number and quality of effects in each section. Although many were underwhelmed by the NS4, the effects section alone make's it a whole new instrument.
  15. I've used the Knox and the K&M 18880. They're both VERY convenient and usable. The Knox is so cheap and usable I don't know why everyone doesn't have 2. You can get them on Amazon and just send it back if you don't like it. Seriously...just buy one. They fold up to almost nothing and you'll definitely find some use for it. I actually typically use it as a shelf holder for controllers and computers, but seriously, it works for almost everything. You can use it as an angled amp stand for example. Or just put your drink on it. Some people don't think the K&M is that solid. There's a little bit of rock in it but I've used it endlessly on gigs and while it ain't exactly rock solid, I've never thought it was an issue. It folds up flatter than an x stand and weighs literally nothing. I'm lately a fan of the liquid z stand. It goes up to 34.75 inches, comes in a lot of colors and isn't expensive and most importantly COMES WITH CASTORS! I have 2. A small bit of assembly at the gig (two thumb screws) but it's rock solid. https://www.amazon.com/Plixio-Piano-Keyboard-Stand-Adjustable/dp/B07574VQPQ/ref=asc_df_B07574VQPQ/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198057020828&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13394919924170749859&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9030164&hvtargid=pla-379121761339&th=1
  16. I had Boston and Edmonton in the finals w the oilers winning. Guess I won't be winning that bracket challenge.
  17. My fave moment of the playoffs so far. Las Vegas Karen flipping double birds with prejudice at Evander Kane as he blows her a kiss.
  18. Even if he barely hit him, it looked so deliberate that you should be suspended just for being such an idiot. I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a chop like that.
  19. True story: Sitting in with a band at a bar in an Abu Dhabi hotel bar. They let me sit in and I smeared the keyboard right off the stand. I think it was Smoke on the Water...It wasn't a clonewheel because that's back before that phrase was even invented. It was some kind of 61 key digital synth with an organ-ish type patch. Yes...there was alcohol involved and no, I never sat in with them again.
  20. Initially, Dennis DeYoung of Styx. Then Kansas melted my brain. From there it just grew to all the early 70s prog stuff. Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson, Pink Floyd. The usual suspects. I was really into Return to Forever and The Elektrik band stuff. Then I quit music for 15 years. I came back as a guitar player but have migrated back to being a keyboard player.
  21. Remember, TKachuk's dad was the last player in the league to get 50+ goals and 200+ Penalty minutes in the same season (96-97). They're at their best being pests in the tough parts of the ice.
  22. What an epic night last night was. The team with the best regular season record IN HISTORY loses game 7 to the last seed. The defending champs and all their superstars lose to a Seattle team that I can only name 3 players. One more game 7 tonight and then on to the second round! Needless to say, my bracket be blowed up. If the Rangers win tonight I'll be 50/50 for the first round.
  23. I had Edmonton and Boston going to the finals. My bracket may be completely blowed up by tonight! Not to mention that as a Phoenician, I am sworn to hate all things LA.
  24. Really looking forward to the Lightning/Leafs game tonight. I feel like Tampa should have won the last two games but just didn't and now they're on the brink of elimination. Both teams are just chock full of talent. Any series that can cause Matthews and Stamkos to fight has got to be testy. First time ever two 60+ goal scorers have ever dropped the gloves with each other.
  25. 4 years ago, but one of my favorite hockey players to watch. So sad when he was traded to Vancouver.
