  1. Sight reading for me is being able to read and play from the sheets. Usually meant for sheet music using the bass and treble clef.  I can read and play from Tab but not on sight.  It may take me 8 weeks to learn 8 measures LoL!  But, I can take a sheet of chords and lyrics and play and sing a tune I know on sight without practicing first.  I would consider this as a form of sight reading and playing even though I can't do the same with sheet music for guitar.  You'll see a lot of players using music stands while performing so they can remember the notes, chords, lyrics, arrangements, etc.  I have known talented pianists, guitarists, violinists, bassists, etc., unable to play without their sheet music.  😎

What mods?  Does this forum have an active moderator? :idk:

Brother BluesApe is listed, but I get the idea he just comes by to hang…looks like he hasn’t posted since last summer.  Myles Rose is still listed, but he hasn’t been here since 2019.  A String left when I rescued the place from the Future Publishing folks.  I believe he expected that this would become more of a money-making enterprise…but my goal was more to preserve the 20+ year old community and the history gathered here.

The Future folks wanted to merge us with their Music Radar site - ugh. :pop:

I come to the guitar forum to learn more about my gear and the craft in general more than anything else.  When I see something that needs maintenance, I fix it….but that’s about it as far as mod duties here.  By and large I look at the guitar forum as your house.  Y’all seem comfortable here… 😎

If one (or more) of y’all wants the keys to the place, lemme know.  If not, it seems to be working okay for the time being, yes?  🤔

It might be fun to give the forum a more creative name, though. :duck:

+1 Dave, the BluesApe, Myles and Astring Mods disappeared on us seems like eons ago.  Thank heavens you came along and filled in the gap for us as far as keeping things alive.  I think the name of the forum is OK as it is but have no objection if some of us think it needs changing.  Thanks again for all you do!  😎👍

  3. Rabid, One of the biggest things that make a Taylor sound different than a Martin, is the person playing them.  Materials, Workmanship and Love would make a Gibson sound different than a Takamine as well as any other brand comparison.  +1 on finding the right fit as we get older...😎

CEB, Good thing your deck is not made out of Mahogany as I liked it the best.  Thanks for the video!  😎

  4. Something I just thought about regarding Tone Woods.  You ever hear the difference between a one-piece wood carved saddle bridge on a jazzy archtop guitar and a tune-o-matic plastic or metal saddle bridge.  A huge difference IMHO having nothing to do with the electronics.  The George Benson guitar comes with both so you can decide which "tone" wood or otherwise, you prefer.  Also, on a floating bridge with wood carved saddles, you do not want to pin it so that you can adjust intonation.  With TOM bridges you can have the bridge pinned so that it doesn't move and still be able to adjust intonation.  I wonder why the OP video doesn't go into this area of discussion as the metal Tele barrel bridges used do make a big difference in "Tone" when comparing with wooden carved bridges (especially when the intonation is way off).  Carved wooden bridges sound too dark for me, but jazzers love them...😎

  5. @ Kuru, I definitely leave the bridge saddle sanding and nut cuts to the techs.  +1 on leaving it overnight and check it again on any truss rod adjustments.  Then check it again a day or two later.  I'll try your 1st and 12th and 6th fret string technique for gauging and checking the gap using the string as a straight edge (even when not doing an adjustment).  Some one long ago (may have been me LoL!) posted an acronym "TRAIN" that I had read somewhere.  T = tune, R = relief, A = action, I = intonation, N = noodle.  Then do it again in that order each time...I do intonation on adjustable TOM and Strat style saddles on electrics and leave the acoustic intonation to the techs.

  6. @ Winston, funny you should post that info, I just got through changing the spark plugs, oils, oil filters, front and rear end gear oils, air filters, fuel filters, etc., on my Suzuki 400 Artic Cat and a Briggs 15hp OHV Brush cutter LoL!  I have done some minor truss rod adjustments, but I usually leave it to my techs when they do the initial set ups.  For anyone thinking of doing truss rod adjustments that have not done them before, I would recommend they watch a few YouTube clips 1st.  I agree with your techniques.  I have never busted a rod yet and hope I never do as I am careful.  Fret buzz, neck relief, back bow, etc., issues can be created by those that are unaware of how to adjust a truss rod.

Thanks for the info and for posting a good response! 😎👍

  7. Tone woods make a big difference on acoustic guitars plugged and unplugged, cedar vs spruce tops, not so much on electrics.  Pickups make the big difference on electric guitars along with pots and caps and switches. Fretboards are more for feel than tone.  However solid spruce tops on semi-hollow and hollow body electrics vs. laminated tops, does make a difference IMHO.  Mahogany bodies also make a difference on electric solid bodies as well....IMHO.  Back and sides maple vs walnut vs rosewood can make a difference on acoustics, not so much on electrics.  A lot of it is visual which may get your juices flowing.  Like Kuru says picks also make a difference and +1,000 on Scott's comment regarding don't demo a guitar on YT plugged in to distortion or O/D, effects.  I want to hear it clean or not at all...😎

ps.  I liked the OP's demo video and comparison tests.

  8. +1 Kuru, for most of us Non-luthier types, doing your own fret work and truss-rod adjustments is best left to the techs IMHO. However, if you have the right tools and want to go for it, a $20 dollar guitar is a great way to start out. 😎

  9. Wish I could help Dave, but I'm sans pedals these days and my memories fading.  +1 As Kuru indicated, just plug your favorite guitar into that little Princeton and have fun as all I really need is a little verb.  I would add a snap on tuner LoL!  The main thing is to have fun and a lot of these guys can really help with the line-up ??'s.  😎👍

  10. I've been very lucky on new guitar frets.  The Gibson Pleck system works fine for me, the other Fender, Taylor, Conti, Epiphone, etc., frets were just fine.  The only guitar I bought new that had a lousy fret set up was a Takamine and one of my MIM Fender Tele's had a little bite.  It cost me $80 bucks to have my tech straighten the Takamine out, but it was worth the trouble...the Tele wasn't that bad so I just sold it...😎

  11. DBM, I got my 1st and only Stella for free...my uncle gave me his old one back in '63 or so...that was my 1st guitar and it was played at a few beach/surf campouts.  In '72 I bought a Fender acoustic for $99 as I needed a guitar when I got out of the Army.  It's been played around so many beach and forest campfires that I couldn't name them all. It's never been in a case and has taken some very hard licks over many years.  It's a wall hanger now.  I'm wishing Kuru a lot of fun times camping out with friends and family and his latest find!   😎

  12. Thanks Kuru, That's a nice looking Ricky...I'm just not serious about adding any guitars to my harem at this time.  Probably won't want to add any more guitars for quite some time.  I keep saying that and somehow wind up with another one!!! $2 grand is probably a decent price for a collector's item...😎

  13. Kuru, I'll keep the Daisy in mind too...thanks for the review!  I like the octave strings on the bottom too and the intonation saddles.  I would have to try both necks as I've never played either the Rick or the Daisy.  I really like the sound and until now I thought only the Rick could get it.  The price on the Daisy (used) is well worth keeping in mind! 😎👍
