  1. You probably know I play regularly with a jazz/fusion/soul/funk outfit. They're currently called 'The Lyveden Project' and while I love the name I'm also aware of the value of having a band name which people can recognise by hearing aloud and then google for. They might decide to keep the name or change it. Any cool name ideas appreciated. We do standards jazz style and also in funkified manner as well as some popular soul and funk tunes. Repertoire includes: The Red One - Pat Metheney My Funny Valentine My Favourite Things This Masquerade Desafinado Chan Chan - Compay Segundo Stratus Red Baron Spain 500 Miles High Song For My Father Summertime You Don't Know what love is Autumn Leaves One Note Samba Ipanema Affirmation Jeep on 35 - John Scofield Valerie Footprints Cissy Strut Chameleon Canteloupe Island Afro Blue Blue Bossa Superstition Ain't No Sunshine Crazy (Gnarls Barkeley) Take Your Momma Out etc to give you a flavour - I'm keen to add more standards. Any ideas on a name (hope the list helps give the context and also bear in mind the video I posted before)? Thanks
  2. Happy New Year Geoff! It was wonderful. There were some problems with the mic lead but they were a tolerant crowd. I was surprised that I wasn't much affected by the jetlag and lack of sleep - maybe a couple of small errors and one slightly manic solo and the 4 hours were a blast. I found that not playing for 2 weeks actually helped my playing. It felt fresh. The crowd appreciated the subtler jazz stuff earlier on - got to play some walking stuff and by 1:45 had transformed into dance-crazy party people and had to lay down the funk. It was a blast!
  3. I'm seriously wondering how many punters will come to the gig tonight. There might still be some tourists here for the holiday season but playing on a cold night so soon after New Years Eve it might be quiet.
  4. Back in London yesterday from LA and it's so cold. The heat's been on full-blast for 24 hours. I have a jet-lagged jazz gig tonight - luckily I remembered Dave Brown's excellent advice about hand-warming/relaxation (hot water and massage). Haven't played bass is two weeks and it feels good! Determined to relax and let the music play me tonight rather than vice versa - reading Victor 's book for the 2nd time was pretty inspiring - also read a lot of books over Christmas. Watching Rocket Science on DVD (good stuff) and practising.
  5. I know nothing about cars, I've never had one.
  6. We did warn you about motorbikes! Glad you are OK.
  7. Take it as a sign you were meant to survive. Is that push-bike or are you talking motorbike?
  8. I sound nothing like Hugh Grant! I don't say y'all out loud over here though - I might slip it into conversation on my next trip to the US.
  9. Neat animated gif a guy in a band I play in made: http://www.shamisenclub.co.uk/lunakalamata/
  10. Nice tracks up on my jazz-fusion band's myspace: http://www.myspace.com/lyvedentrio
  11. What do you think about this chord sequence? click here!
  12. Another good link for transcriptions: http://www.angelfire.com/fl4/moneychords/jazztranscriptions.html
  13. Not really OT but I periodically mention this great web resource which I frequently dip into: http://www.cs.hmc.edu/~keller/jazz.html Bob Keller's jazz links page, wow!
  14. It's actually my old avatar from about 3 years ago. I didn't think anyone would notice.
  15. Geoff, I tried to learn that . . . and realised it's not the bass playing and singing at the same time I sucked at . . . rather just singing full stop. MySpace is blocked here - I'll try to have a listen tonight. Did you ever get to see that Geoff Beck gig?
  16. Yay! I asked my kids I teach (7-9 years old) if they knew about the election and which country it was in - they did. I asked if they knew the names of who people were choosing between and I got a thoughtful silence . . . until Mary said that she thought one of the candidates was Bob Marley.
  17. Very sweet wood. Had a jam recently with a drummer and guitarist on some fusion stuff: http://www.4shared.com/dir/9946981/ce6e4695/Whitechapel_Jam.html
