Docbop
Got most of the band"s gear into this back in the day. Amp slid back with acceleration and shattered the rear window. That"s Rock"n"Roll! Awesome! I think those wagons had 500 hp engines. And extra points for pretty much being the National Lampoon Vacation car. My friends parents had one of those that he drove he alway pointed out that they were basically a Lincolin Continental with a station wagon body. Because they were built on the same assembly line. My favorite was a bass player friend who had black 1955 Chevy Nomad wagon that he and his brother fixed up and was fast. Every once in awhile we could get him to haul all the band gear in the Nomad. MuzikTeechur
500 HP?!!! Hell no, they had a 400M 2 barrel carb; 167 HP tops. But lots of torque. We had one for the family band. Hauled a Hammond Porta-B, Leslie, Drum set, Guitar, amp, and PA. Got most of the band"s gear into this back in the day. Amp slid back with acceleration and shattered the rear window. JohnH
I have two Ford Escort Wagons. Unfortunately my 93 got messed up on the way to work and needs front suspension work so now it's just in town only It has 334K on it. I flew to Phoenix and brought home another one just after in 2014 it had just 80K miles on it now has 207K. These have 65 cubic feet of space, so almost has much as a CRV or RAV4. What is interesting is in the past two years I get people coming up to me and talking about the cars, as if they were some kind of collector 50s or 60s cars. This is something I never would have imagined happening. Happened last week at the gym with my beater 93, guy was a former ford car salesman and wanted to buy it. My favorite compliment is "You get all that gear in that car?" Yes I do!

My favorite compliment is "You get all that gear in that car?" Yes I do! We bought an early-90's Escort wagon for our oldest when she was in HS. She passed it down through three more kids, and if it hadn't been totaled by the youngest I suspect it'd still be in service. Those things can take a BEATING. TommyRude
This was my first gig rig (one just like it), I bought it for $350. Threw my Rhodes into the back seat. Awesome car, drove it into the ground. One incident, a huge deer ran into the driver's side as I was driving to Ojai from Ventura. Caved in the side of the car, but it kept on going for about another year or two. CowboyNQ
This is not my car, but if you threw a bull bar and spotlights on it, it would be almost identical. 2015 Mitsubishi Pajero, 4WD diesel. Can fit my entire setup in the back, very handy for long drives across the country and excellent torque for towing our gear trailer. I had a 2008 model of the same vehicle that had done 285,000km so I upgraded before the resale value got too far diminished. The one I"m driving now has done 168,000km. Absolutely bulletproof these things.
Docbop
Funny seeing all these big cars and trucks you keyboardists have and thinking how lucky I was that in my gigging days I played guitar or bass so any car had plenty of room. My upright bass fit into my BMW, friends would get to gigs in a Prius, just fold down the back seat flatten the passenger seat and slide the upright in . The amp would fit in back next to the bass body.
jarrell
Back in the day I had a Volkswagen bug - took out the back seat, put in a piece of wood (trimmed to fit the contour) as a new floor, with a rug ontop (also trimmed to fit). I could fit my minimoog, rhodes, a dual showman bottom, amp and cables all in the back, and still carry a passenger up front, at 30 mpg no less :-)

Don't see many BMW wagons here in the states, but you see them all over the place in Germany/Europe, along with Mercedes and Audi wagons. Stokely
My gig rig is currently so tiny I could do it in a Smart car. Once I get my PC4 I'll be back to occasionally using two keyboards again and need a bit more room. In my never ending search for the perfect gig bag/case I am trying a Husky rolling toolcart. 26 inches, 15 gallons, with a telescoping handle and large wheels. So far so good. It's externally a bit larger than I like, but extra bonus for the matte black color with no bling that can be on stage with me--I left it under my keyboard stand as a mixer stand! Nice a stable and flat top for my beer Short of needing a PA for a band situation, I don't think I'll ever need a large vehicle again for music. I don't mind them as I don't prefer shoehorning stuff in, but it's not required anymore. With no amp and no rack that frees things up. The biggest PITA is my rock n roller cart, it can easily scratch the car getting it in (that's where a cargo vehicle would be great.)
