  1. The two most often recommended YouTube Logic Pro tutorial channels: Music Tech Help Guy Why Logic Pro Rules Also, Logic Pro Help - David Nahmani's forum; he has written several books on Logic Pro (the latest of which is referenced by DocBop above).
  2. I bought his Song of the Sun album back in the 90's and really enjoyed it - great playing, really nice songs and arrangements - he just seemed to come at things from a different angle. RIP...
  3. I use Scotch Super Hold tape - it's much better than regular scotch tape. I tape just the backside, about a 4" strip on both the top and the bottom. I have never had a chart need retaping (yet). I also use 28 lb. paper - much better than the standard 20 lb paper most people use. Having said all that, I plan to move to UnRealbook at some point. As jerrythek says, you can use hotspots, or just unroll your digital chart (instead of jumping back to the D.S., just add it as the next page, same for coda).
  4. FWIW I've been using the M-Audio EX-P Universal Expression Pedal - lightweight plastic, but served me fine for the last couple of years.
  5. Check out Larry William's Minimoog solo (and outro solo) on the tune "Streetwave," on the Quincy Jones produced album "Blam" by the Brothers Johnson. Also note his comment (willyworld1234) noting how he replaced his idol George Duke at the last moment on synth for this cut... The whole album is both blatantly commercial but cool, with Quincy's touch featuring the Seawind horns and players like Harvey Mason, Richard Tee, etc.
  6. When the DX7 appeared in 1983, it listed for $1995, which is $6,162.69 in today's dollars. It was a game changer, but not sure it was in affordability.
  7. That's what I use for smaller, more acoustic gigs, and they sound much better than OK - flat response, great for acoustic piano, and the weight is an added bonus. Highly recommended!
  8. To me Herbie's solo on Chamelon is "iconic Herbie". The melodic inside/outside lines, funky groove in the lines, even the 2 chord progression (no stale I IV or V I, but a 3rd apart and of course the second one a sus chord) - all done in a thoughtful, relaxed and playful way... I love how the strings come in and provide a nice backdrop just a taste. Of course the rest of the rhythm section kept the groove, Paul Jackson and Harvey Mason - and finally, nice Rhodes sound. Soloing over one or two chords is its own challenge, different from a tune with a lot of changes. Then again it is different when there is no other chordal instrument, like here, where you are free to harmonically go in various directions. If there was for example a guitarist comping behind you, you'd likely be more harmonically constricted, depending on the guitarist. Still whatever the situation is, the challenge is always how to be creative in the moment, given what is happening around you...
  9. Really nice contemplative version there, Dave!
  10. C# dim 7 is a C# dim triad with a B flat. C# dim maj 7 is a C# dim triad with a B sharp (or C natural). To add additional upper partials to a diminished chord, you just use the other scale tones (actually the dim 7th a whole step up, D# dim 7th) for the 9th, 11th, 13th and 7th. So my understanding (and I have seen) this as a C# dim b13 - a C# dim 7th with an A natural (and omitted 5th). The bottom staff shows 1.) a standard 2 handed voicing, 2.) the voicing in question, obtained by dropping the 5th and doubling the root.
  11. Here is sounds like you expected more care and compassion from him, even after you didn't extend those feelings towards him, both hurting him and making him look stupid in the eye of others. I think focusing on his behavior is missing the point. I don't think the take away from this situation is: was this relationship too transactional, or failed because it was not easy or convenient enough. Rather, it is that lack of communication causes problems, and ignoring people shows you don't care and can be hurtful. I realize that you had other issues that prevented you from fulfilling your commitments here, and sympathize with you in that it tough to deal with letting someone down as a result of one's own behavior. However, you clearly demonstrated to him that it was more important to you to not only not do the work but also not explain why. I think the most positive thing you can get for this is to learn that communication is key, and lack of communication always makes things worse.
  12. I too own the American Concert D, and would be happy if they offer an upgrade path with their products. I look at it as both a working musician and former software developer. In both cases you want to be paid for your work, but you don't expect a club, say, to pay you less because they've paid you for previous gigs, if that analogy makes sense. Oh, I see they do offer an upgrade path, at least for Ivory II owners.
  13. Some powered speakers have a low frequency boost or cut function, so check the manual for that speaker. If it does have that capability, I would guess the borrowers enabled the low frequency boost, thereby making your keyboard sound more bass heavy.
  14. Just checking - do you use the Audio MIDI Setup app, and if so, are you using a configuration that has the Babyface, not the Fireface, current?
  15. I just realized you are talking about headphones, not ear buds, with the Sony's you have. Do you know if Sony has the same features in an ear bud? I do have a friend who is both interested in something for gigging, who is also not in the Apple ecosystem. Yes, I should just google some...
  16. Those look pretty cool, yes a little pricey... One thing I wonder is, is the monitor input mono or stereo? Their documentation doesn't say, just that there is one 1/4 TRS input. That could be unbalanced stereo, or balanced mono. Also, I'm wondering, aren't there other in ear monitors with ambient mics built in in this price range? I'm guessing this is a mid level function - that is, cheaper ones don't have ambient mics, and expensive pro ones assume a pro tour level setup (as opposed to individual musicians like a lot of us), where there is a dedicated individually tailored quality monitor mix coming from FOH as so do not need ambient sound.
  17. Thanks everyone for your input and advice. I now understand that the amplifier power output is different from the current draw input. I knew that it varied according to source material, but as I said these are the only specs listed. Well, That 0.6A is listed only for the ZxA1, so I assume at 1/2 power it would draw at the most 2.4A, or 4.8 for the pair. The SxA360s don't list that, but if roughly comparable (they are listed as less watts speaker output), that's under 10 for all 4 speakers, and the PC4 is listed as 2.5A, although it may be in fact less. Long story short, I just now told them 15A is what I need; I'm sure I'm fine.
  18. I got asked for an upcoming gig about amperage, which I've never been asked before. I am providing the PA through which I play keys (including key bass), plus there is a mic for bandleader talking. We play at acoustic volume - neither saxes, pans or drums are mic'ed. The system I am bringing is 2 EV SxA360s for mains, 2 EV ZxA1s for monitors and my Kurzweil PC4. I would normally just bring the ZxA1s (which are 8") but because I am also playing bass, the 12" SxA360s work better. My question is, how do I realistically calculate the amperage draw for this setup? I know the formula, watts / volts = amps ...and have the watts listed in the owner's manuals, but I'm thinking the watts listed are the maximum the powered speaker can draw. I always set the speaker volumes to noon (I.e. half volume). What I have right now is: Kurzweil PC4 15VDC 2.5 A (how it is listed in the manual) EV SxA360 600 W 120V = 5 A x 2 = 10 A EV ZxA1 800 W 120V = 6.6 A x 2 = 13.3 A Total = 25.8 A I swear I have plugged this system in at several places that I'm sure only had one 15 (or possibly 20) amp circuit. My Furman SS-6B power strip, which I usually plug both ZxA1s into along with my PC4 and sometimes a bassist's amp, is rated at 15 amps - just the 2 ZxA1's and PC4 would exceed that, at 15.8 amps. Of course, I've never had a problem with it. I mean, I can just tell them 25.8 amps and be done with it, but if it causes some cascading freakout or some such, like for that much power draw, the band must play only in one location that is in the direct sun, while all the guests chill in the shade (has happened before), or some other inconvenience, I'll be regretting my amperage honesty.
  19. Back in the 1980's I got a chance to work with the Chroma system. A friend had 2 Chromas and 2 Expanders, along with two Apple II's and the Chroma sequencer software (and some Roland drum box); I recorded a bunch of tunes I wrote on his setup. Sadly (and similar to most of my past projects), I just have a 40 year old cassette that I never digitized. Very powerful system for its time.
  20. Ligeti's Poème symphonique from 1962, for 100 metronomes...
  21. It does... happy to support this site which is a great resource in so many ways, with a lot of great people contributing over the years.
  22. I used to own 2 Roland KC300 keyboard amps, and while I liked the design of the mixer (very flexible), I disliked the sound - not flat, tubby sounding, lousy for acoustic piano. A friend had 2 JBL 12's and offered them to me for free, so I put one in one of my cabinets. I then A B'd the two cabinets, and could hardly heard any difference. So I concluded the lousy sound was amp/preamp/cabinet related, not speaker. But that's just specific to that KC300 amp.
  23. Why not just use two mono units. like you do with cables? A friend just recently bought two NUX C-5RC devices, one for each channel of his keyboard. They transmit at 5.8 GHz (superior noise/interference rejection than 2.4). He used them on a gig with his Kronos, said they worked great.
  24. Just curious... how many here have experienced losing access to a music app (temporary or permanent) on their iPad or iPhone due to Apple/Developer disagreements? I understand abandonware, but I think that is more the developer's fault.
