mildbill
someone else brought it up, so i'll continue it (even if it is a little early). korg will replace the triton line. yamaha will bring out the ES rack. roland will reproduce the jp8000 for varios. access will give us the D. clavia will give us the NL4. alesis will give us the ion rack. kawai will give additive another try. (K500)? kurzweil will revive the VA1 (in a modified form). that's enough for a start - anyone else think any of these will happen, or am i off base? Tusker
My guesses: - I think we will see more dsp/hardware combinations like Powercore. - We will see more PC-as-synth ideas like OpenLabs. - We will see more hardware/software business alliances, partnerships and possibly acquisitions. - The analog revival will continue, at lower price points. - Yamaha will release (gasp) a soft-synth suite. And some fine new Mlan applications. - The distinction between "synthesis DSP's" and "other DSPs" will continue to erode. - Control will continue to be an important sub-theme, with midi control (and hopefully) other kinds of control in devices. - Korg will announce an important new synthesizer, possibly OASYS inspired (Z2?) with new dsps. And for more of the same ... - At least 20 new "tube" versions of existing devices will be rushed into the market ... again. - At least two great new grand piano samples will be featured and debated. - Cooler looking speakers will be the order of the day. The usual speaker-drivers will arranged in glitzy new ways to captivate the "casual gigging" market. Jerry
RABid
Virus D More controllers with built in sounds. (Like the latest Novation.) Lower quality as hardware tries to compete with software by slashing prices. Robert This post edited for speling. clusterchord
ION Rack or Tabletop. I agree with Jeebus, too early for NL4 with all G2 series just picking up speed. Virus D perhaps, but i'm 50/50 on that one. Too many B's and C's on the market. It would need to be a radical design advancement. Also, even if they do release it, it will more likely happen at 'home', on Frankfurt Messe instead of NAMM. Some Firewire 800 audio devices may be released. PCI-X devices maybe 2006 - MI is very slow in following the advancement in hardware PC world. More and more VSTi "True" emulations. All current industry trends will continue. not many sensational products, more like 'safety in numbers' policy - more RAM, more FX, more bull.. bigger new triton or whatever. UA could possibly release a firewire version of their mega popular UAD-1 card. oh, and Bob Moog returns to modules production with exact replicas and some new exciting modules, and releases new Multimoog - a smaller, more affordable, brother to Voyager, with 2osc, midi, etc.. hehe, this isn't even hoping, more like dreaming science fiction http://www.babic.com - music for film/theatre, audio-post

mildbill
i'm not sure what it means, but 'i think' that: young chang bought kurzweil; then samick wanted to buy young chang; but this is not to happen. but can samick still buy the 'division' of kurzweil from YC? i think so. the reason samick couldn't buy YC had something to do with it becoming a monopoly for pianos in that area.but kurzweil isn't primarily a piano company, so it should be a 'go' for that deal, right? or do i have it all mixed up? Why would they want to get mixed up with the Kurzweil division? My bet is that they probably would have sold off that piece anyway. Sad about Kurz, though. Sad for most every synth manufacturer out there. These companies deserve to be among the richest in the world, if you ask me. But, I guess we've reserved those spots for discount retailers and carbonated sugar-water companies.
Synthguy
If the American instrument people have any sense, they'll pull together people from the rubble of Emu, Ensoniq and Kurzweil (if they do indeed go down) and create a serious electronic music company. Ensomuweil, or, Kurzmusoniq, or... well, something. Or wait, go to Dave Smith! VAST must not die, and I really want to see the VA-1. This keyboard solo has obviously been tampered with! capnzoot
Late breaking NAMM news. Sony and Apple will both introduce updates for Acid and Garage Band to Acid MAX and GB MAX. Both will contain full blown linguistic and algorithmic composer engines capable of writing and performing lyric content, ship with a 160GB HD containing a history of world music library pre installed and be able to slice sample component content and re assemble it on the fly based on any morph of the 3,216 musical styles available. At the 2006 Grammy, CMT and Latin Grammy's a VAIO or Powerbook will be escorted to the podium to receive Song, Album and Artist of the year awards.
