yannis D
Hi Guys Yesterday night I saw Lou Donaldson with Dr. Lonnie Smith on the organ playing live - the point is that Dr. Smith was not playing with a B3, not even with a double manual simulation, but he was using a Nord Electro 61 (the same red one many of us have in our rig). He was just amazing! A master-player of the B3 seemed just happy with the little monster - you could just turn your head away of him, and you could not recognize the difference in terms of sound, drawbars settings, ect. He was looking fine with the virtual drawbars and the various limitations (keyboard split, etc), and, on two occasions, he put the keyboard behind his head in a Hendrix-esque figure! His sound was amazing! After the concert I decited to sell my heavy Korg CX-3 and just keep on searching the possibilities of the Electro. After all, if Electro is good enough for him, must be just fine for most -if not all- of us Regards Yannis Be grateful for what you've got - a Nord, a laptop and two hands
BP3
I'm lovin the electro! You caneasily do the two manual thing by taking another keyboard on MIDI ch 2 and inputing it into the electro. The second keyboard would be the lower manual.
Superbobus
I've got the VK8, OS 2.0 and two months ago I played on a mint condition B3. That Nord Electro must be reaeaeaeaealllllyyy good or the Doctor has been contracted and has to fake he's happy. http://www.bobwijnen.nl Hipness is not a state of mind, it's a fact of life. coyote
LOL!! Actually, I can see Dr.Smith having a good time with it. Especially with the Hendrix poses - Smith is very much into Jimi. HOWEVER.... I doubt Lonnie would give up his the B-3 on a permanent basis. He is one of the best basspedal players I've ever seen, and generally a wizard on Hammond. It would be a waste of his considerable talents to lose the Hammond for good. Originally posted by Superbobus: I've got the VK8, OS 2.0 and two months ago I played on a mint condition B3. konaboy
Cool! Elaborate on the amplification system used with the Nord... Real leslie, or stereo PA? hang out with me at woody piano shack
yannis D
He had a real Leslie along with the foot pedal - but he seemed to use just the Electro's rotor system, and he used the Leslie's rotor only on "fast" - no beaks, no nothing. I'm sure he would be much happier with the real thing. But, even with the Electro, he was all smiling! petros
There you go, with a real Leslie it would be right on the sound. I wonder if the Nord Electro was a rental or loaned, because a real B3 was not available for that gig. Did he USE any of the OTHER Electro sounds???? yannis D
Dear PetrosThe Electro was propably rented. But i'm sure thew could have find a real C3 -they did that on other occasions in the past. Maybe Dr. Smith asked for an Electro (????). In any case, Dr. Smith used strictly the hammond sound (he was playing the base lines all along). coyote
They might have thought they had a B3 or C3 rented, and the rental fell through for whatever reason.... the Electro might be his backup.... maybe he's trying out new stuff.... lessee now, what other baseless speculations can I come up with? petros
Thanks Yannis & Coyote,I take it that Lonnie Smith was using the keyboard in the split mode for the bass? I wonder why he would use a 61 key instead of the 73 if he is splitting for bass?
marino
Lou Donaldson and Lonnie Smith are hitting Rome next Wednesday! Lonnie is announced on "organ"...I'll try to be there.
yannis D
Dear FriendsDr. Smith was having a split (the standard split of the Electro, not his...). In fact sometimes he would play notes from the lower keyboard, without percussion - not by choice but cause the keyboard was... well, had THIS split from Clavia's masterminds! Anyway.. The sound was superb.Dear Mario, don't miss the concert for nothing!
