I will say this - when I was a teenager, I would have answered either "Karn Evil Nine - 3rd Impression" by EL&P or "Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel" by Kansas. I still really like both a lot; but as far as I'm concerned, there's too much great music and I have too many different musical needs (ifyaknowhatImean) to be able to pick just one piece that's my do-all end-all fave.

CHEATER!!

Everybody ELSE has to pick ONE!!!

:D

I can't pick one, either. I can't even pick one per IDIOM. But for the sake of argument, I'll take...

All Along The Watchtower, Jimi Hendrix Version

But I can't REALLY pick just one.

The Black Knight always triumphs!

Okay - in the same spirit, I will choose Camille Saint-Saens' "Danse Macabre".

Awesome piece of music...I'd love to record it...

Only one? Six or seven, perhaps...

Bartok's "Six Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm" (they close vol.6 of Mikrokosmos)

Mozart's Requiem, especially the Lacrimosa

Beethoven's Sonata op. 106 "Hammerklavier"

Ligeti's "Lontano"

ANYTHING by Bach

Coltrane's "Giant Steps"

Strayhorn's "Lush Life"

Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring"

and on and on... Come on Dave - you know it's not possible to single one piece out...

I´t´s impossible to pick one..but ok...if I was going to be executed and I was allowed to listen to one last song in front of the firing squad it would have to be Memphis Soul Stew with King Curtis. I just love that guy. Not much keyboard in that one though..just a pinch of organ...

You'll see a common "theme"... :D

Classical - Concerto de Aranjuez by Rodrigo

Non-Classical - Spain by Chick Corea

I tried to choose something in the Rock/Pop world, but came up with too many and can't narrow it down to anything less than five.

Edit: Doh... learn to spell.

What a great, great song !

Thanks for the reminder.

I just never get tired of listening to Steely Dan. Always new discoveries in their music.

I could never pick "a" favourite though. Too tough.

O yeah. An amazing composition, one of the best pieces of music that band ever put out. Lyrics are a bit cuckoo (well....that's Yes LOL) but the music is gorgeous. I mean....pipe organ!...trips around the circle of 4ths....really ambitious writing.

I like Tarkus a lot too, that's a classic. But I just can't think of a single favorite piece...I love so much music, and there's so much good music out there.

One piece that moves me a lot is "Lunar Sea" by Camel...and I've been digging "Dancing With The Mooonlit Knight" and "Firth of Fifth" by Genesis lately. Musicians' music.

"The Song Of Loving-Kindness", by Gary Bartz. A short instrumental jazz piece off his Blues Chronicles album. The piece follows a very angry rap, making its beauty even more striking. This is not something I can listen to very often; it's overwhelming.

A classical piece that often profoundly affects me is Franck's Chorale #3 in A minor, an organ piece. I have a reading of it performed by French organist Marie Claire-Alain...it's a stunning piece. The Three Chorales were the last pieces of music he wrote in the last couple months of his life, and the 3rd chorale has a palpable sense of his knowing he was near the end of his life.

Staggering music.

there are so many, but here's a list:

classical: Firebird suite (one of the onyl classical songs that makes me want to break things) and barber's adagio for strings (how this song makes me want to weep)

Rock: Well this one is hard, but whatever song it is, it goes to NIN. Here are some that I can't decide on Eraser, Something i can never have, The way out is through, Ruiner, Hurt and The Fragile.

aaron copeland's appalachian spring or dave brubeck's brandenburg gate- dang it looks like a tie! both are inspiring in their own ways. appalachian spring was the first classical piece of music i heard and i love it still. surfjazz :thu:
