  1. I'm trying to figure out the "lead" sound in the chorus of We Belong by Pat Benatar (1984). It takes place for the first time around the 40 second mark of the video below. I know I've heard the lead sound multiple times (in other songs), but I just can't place it / figure out how to get started wtih it. I've gotten the plucked sound figured out pretty well. Official Video Any ideas? TIA
  2. I'd normally ask the Motifator crew about htis, but that site is giving me fits (resolves but only with an old-style text page). Hopefully someone here can help with this one - I have a MOXF and I often use the pedal to bring in other sounds (e.g., piano with pedal turned off and a separate element with the pedal on to bring in the strings). Thi sis in Performance mode. Lately this hasn't worked for me - all of the elements are responding to the volume even if I have the controllers (7 or 11) turned off. Am I missing something basic? This appears to be a global issue, but the global settings shouldn't have changed. I'm hoping I don't have to do a hard reset on the machine and start over.
  3. Thanks. This pic is exactly what I was looking for. I did something similar with my StandTastic stand, but eventually found that the 48" StandTastic didn't need it (I could put the back of the upper keyboard on the uprights, and the front on the lower keyboard with velcro to lock it in place). I'll see if I can fabricate something similar for my needs.
  4. I would love to get more detail on how you mounted that M-Audio controller. I can't tell if there's a tier, or something custom.

With the exception of the Omega solution, I think I'm going to go the route of a monitor mounted on a stand as the monitor is large (26"), so it's probably going to be something like this: Pole Mount VESA Bracket It means a stand with a larger footprint, but it will probably be safer considering the size of the actual monitor.
  6. I'll look through IKEA. Didn't see Stubberget bracket, but I'll look a bit deeper later today. The Music Stand idea is possible as well and certainly would help in the short term, as is a tilting, sliding, wall mount. I could also fabricate something myself (I built the desk afterall ), but that takes work, time (which I'd rather use on music), and always a chance of hurting myself on power tools I'll repost results when I get a a solution.
  7. I've got multiple and it kind of depends on the usage. FYI - My primary keyboard is a MOXF8, but I also use a 61 key Novation Impulse and a Hammond SK1 that would have to fit into the mix. Windows PC based recording and playback, so no Mac monitor/CPU combos. In the studio: Z-Stand on casters, similar to this on Amazon Gator Keyboard Table (Sweetwater link) . This is a nice, sturdy stand, but it's depth is minimal and while it has a horizontal bar, that bar is so far under the keyboard that it won't work. I also have a custom "studio desk" that has back and sides, so mounting without altering doeesn't work. This desk does face the wall, and I have a large 4k TV mounted there, but would like to have something for closer work (e.g., a 26" monitor, maybe a touch screen). I've thought about mounting something on the wall behind the keyboard, which is fine when I'm facing the wall, but not when I'm working with anyone else. For live (backing tracks and PA monitoring ), I usually use a Laptop on a dedicate laptop stand and advance, start/stop using MIDI commands from one of the keyboards, but it would be nice to have a second monitor - even if it's small - available. Standtastic 48" keyboard stand with two keyboards Z-Stand for single keyboard gigs I tend NOT to like second tiers on anything other than the Standtastic because the upper is so far away from the bottom keyboard.
  8. I'm trying to figure out the best way to put together a rig for studio, and maybe eventually live, that allows me to mount a computer monitor to a keyboard stand. My three biggest challenges with "standard" mounting arms are: a. most are designed to mount horizontally (onto desks) b. When removing the keyboard, I'm afraid the keyboard stand will tip over. c. Cantilevering it over the keyboard Bonus points for being adjustable without having to pull out an Allen wrench.
  9. Thanks folks. It's a Windows laptop (usually a Lenovo Yoga or ThinkPad), so the Mac perspective is out. It has a headphone jack, but the problem with most Windows laptops is noise on the audio output. However, I dismissed this too early - will look into it before I start tearing apart my controller. When I can I'll update the thread with my decision
  10. Sorry - Not MIDI, audio interface. Correcting the original post. The primary reason for the mod is to allow me to cut down my rig size and have a single keyboard with my laptop for smaller gigs - (e.g., at church where I play mostly piano but could use some additional sounds). It's not about additional DIN outputs - it's all about having audio and the controller in a single unit (controller + laptop as opposed to controller, laptop, audio interface). RIght now when I play I'm using the Impulse, the laptop, and a MOXF8, but I dont' want to haul the MOXF8 around when I don't need to. Sometimes I use my Hammond SK1, which is great for organ and some EP's, but not nearly as flexible as a synth or controller with layers, splits, etc.) .
  11. <Fixing original post based on feedback> I'm thinking about adding a small audio interface (2 channel) to my Novation Impulse controller to give me a bit more flexibility with gigs, etc. The Impulse is light and though I haven't opened it up I think there could be enough room for a disembodied small audio interface (maybe one of the Behringers). I figure the case and the jacks are probably the heaviest part of the interface, and since the jacks will be mounted it shoudl be stable. It will be used with my laptop I dont' want to haul around my MOXF8 (which I generally use with my laptop for audio and MIDI, and the Impulse as a second keyboard) I figure I'll have to graft on a second set of jacks (MIDI, audio, USB) as I don't plan to integrate what's there already internally (e.g., two USB's), including separate power if need be. Anyone else tried this? Any points/hints?

  13. Omnisphere Kontakt Garritan was my "orchestra" library for many years. Trying to figure out what I can use in its stead these days - most of the ones that I have tried are tooc oplicated for most of what I want to do.... or maybe I just have to realize that I need to setup some templates, etc.
  14. I hadn't thought of mounting them on the pedal board and running them up to the keyboards. I can maybe give this a try.... my pedal board is not a commercial one (plywood painted black with Velcro, etc.) so I have to find room for a power stripp.
  15. Tactical question here. How do you store your wall warts for gigging? I have a bag that I keep my microphone, accessories, power cables, and small accessories in, but the wall warts are always getting tangled up. This not only goes for keyboards, but also for mixers, audio interfaces, computers, pedals, and just about everything else on a gig that doesn't have an IEC power connection. I can't store them in the gig bag with the synth (outside they become bumps in the case and could get damaged, and inside the case it's too tight to fit - not to mention scratching the boards). While I'd ideally like to have them in the sleeves with the other cables, unbalanced cables and even low voltage power shouldn't be that close together. Any ideas would be welcomed...
  16. I think stands may be one of the most popular (and opinionated - in a good way) topic in the 20+ years I've lurked on this forum... I currently use a StandTastic 2 tier. I also own a three tier and have the wall mounts in my studio. Pros - Very sturdy, Breaks down easily and quickly (for me at least) Cons - I think they're a sideline to L&M's main business (guitar straps). While I love the stands, the accessories are rather limited (the mic attachment is dismal). By default you can't get the keyboards very close together. I want something as close as possible to a "hammond" layout , or at least closer to the Invisible Stands that I bought 37 years ago and loved (See below). I fabricated something that allows me to do this and it's pretty stable, but it's a bit of a hassle. I've been experiementing with some things and I may even going to cut down a couple of the arms to see if it makes a difference. ZStands (Pro Line and a bunch of others - note that parts are not interchaneable between manufacturers). A Z-stand is my go to for single keyboard gigs. Pros: Some attachments (some good, some bad, some don't connect to the ZSTand - you have to connect them to an upper tier), easy to setup, very adjustable, not too expensive. Cons: Keyboards are too far apart when using the upper tiers. Invisitble Stands - Haven't been manufactured in DECADES. I own two (a black and a rare chrome one). Pros: Keyboards are close together (closer than any other stand I've found by default). Solid. Low profile Cons: Out of production, hard to carry around (the nylon bags last about a year and then fell apart), the suspensnion mechanism tends to stretch or break, but that's easily fixed with some key rings. No attachments. My $.02.
  17. Alright - I'll begin. I probably have close to 20 keyboard stands, going back to Invisible (1985) and USS tubular stands. One of my current favorites is the StandTastic stand, but the ways the tiers work I can never get my top keyboard close enough to the bottom keyboard to be efficient. So... I pulled some wood scraps out of the shed, setup the chop saw and soem spray paint and has some fun. Insert photo Insert with Keyboard resting on it. (Sorry, couldn't figure out how to insert a photo). These sit inside the channel of the bottom tier arms, and allows me to have a fairlly stable base to for the top keyboard. It could be better, and I'm going to try a few things when I get a chance, and including a couple of ideas for my Z style stands (that are easier to setup than the STandTastic.
  18. She has a great voice. A little over the top onstage presence so.etimes, but I may saying g that be wise I'm not young anymore and jealous. Last.ti.e I was blown away by a young singer was Haley Williams, but Lawrence may the Cory Henry of the vocal world for me thus year.
  19. We've had a stand thread since early in j my time at KC How about stand mods? I find that few stands work well enough for me with some changes. With 3D printing it may be easier to do some if these but I'm wondering if anyone else is kidding stands?
  20. Foreplay is on my list too (and I may have a reason to do it soon:) ). Learned Karn Evil 9 (1st impression, part 2) when I was 16 or 17 and played that in a band - which was great fun, but always wanted to get back and do the at least the rest of 1st impression and 2nd impression - probably after Foreplay. I did learn "Freedom Jazz Dance" by Brian Auger about 5 years ago - great tune, and one I'd been thinking about playing since I was 17 as well.... It took nearly 40 years to get to it...
  21. I rmeember a lot of drummers doing that in the 70's (including Don Henley I think). Good idea, but the problem with doing it this way is that while dummers are relatively immobile (swivelling on their stools), the problem I'm having problems becuase I move laterally as well as up and back. I'll keep looking....
  22. I will give the clamp a try. The Rode articulating stand doesn't screw into a standard mic stand, but I can find one that does. Which stands DON'T i have I primarily use a Standtastic (48") stand for two keyboard gigs, as well as a ZStand for single keyboard gigs. I've created a couple of modifications for the Standtastic that allows me to keep the keyboards closer together, and I'm working on something similar for the Z Stand (as it's easier to setup.
  23. Silicon caulk. Removeable, easy to find, and has some other attributes that make it good in most cases. You just want to make certain you don't get any that has a corrosive quality (rare but worth investigating). I worked with a soundguy many years ago who use to put a good size "drop" on 1/4" connectors in his racks so they wouldn't vibrate out. When he needed to remove them it required a good, strong pull, but it didn't impede him in emergencies.
  24. I've been frustrated by typical mic stand mounted booms and keyboard stand mounted booms for a while. I stand when I play (most of the time), and with a couple of keyboards, multiple splits, and reaching for pedals, having a traditional boom is frustrating as hell. I have a headset mic, but those are more difficult to manage singing (can't back away), plus the one I have (AKG) is pretty heavy. it seems I'm singing more and more in the groups I'm in and I'd like to find a way to use a spring loaded, articulated boom similar to this, but they can't see an "easy" way to mount it to any of my keyboard stands AND make it so that it does what I need it to. I have a Rode broadcast arm in my studio for a big condenser mic and I love it. Spring "broadcast" Boom style Years ago I saw Steve Walsh use one live and it seemed like a great way to manage it. Has anyone else done this and mounted it to a keyboard stand? Or a traditional mic stand?
  25. This is a great thread. Thanks to all. For me, I only upgrade the Arturia Colleciton every other year (and this is the year for it), as well as Komplete. Im pretty intrgued by the Izotope bundle (1 year for $199) as well. Got a lot of plug ins, and while I'd love to buy some more hardware synths (Odyssey), I haven't even turned on my Behringer Model D in over a year, but really want to do so soon. On another note, I upgraded to the X32 Compact earlier this year (from the XR18), and that blew much of my music budget, but it is SO nice to have faders and knobs on a board - it's getting me excited to play wiht the Model D again - I just with the Model D had the ability to save patches (even to a computer) so I could recall when I needed to. Oh well.... it sounds good and it was under $300 USD.
