GAS - who's got it?

What don't you like about the PF board? It sounded good in store, and I was considering picking one up until this comment. Obviously the stock cs6x piano isn't fooling anyone, but doesn't the PF have good sounds? Yes, I respect your opinion very much.

Actually, I like the piano board very much. At first the acoustic pianos on the card didn't do too much for me but I have come to like them a lot, in stereo they are much more realistic IMHO than the stock S80 pianos. They are more suited to solo/ballad work since they are much less bright than the stock sounds, although you can EQ them bright if you need that.

Well. Let me say this 1st. IMHO, no piano sample is perfect, and I think you basically have to 'get used to it' which I haven't with it.

I like the fact that it has a nice punchy attack - you can hear the 'hammering' better... The sustain part is weird though; it feels muffled, like there's a blanket over the soundboard. It could just be my speakers, they are far from perfect. The pc88mx sounds a bit harsh to me, but not muffled in the same way. The sound also seems a bit thin; not overly so, but a little bit.

Also, the cs6x action is horrible for piano playing; I think I've said that a fair amount of times in this forum. Now that I've started miding my pc88mx to the cs, I'm enjoying the piano more.

But I have to admit my 'piano tastes' are weird. I can't stand the alesis 'bosendorfer' piano, which suits most people fine. If you like it, by all means give it a shot.

To close in, I haven't had the board for very long. I installed it back in October.. then my gear got shipped and I didn't get up and running until February... and get familiar with the board hasn't been my 1st priority. (The damn AN card seems to be eating up all my free time :D ).

I'll try to post again once I've had more chance to use it.

My copy of Celemony's Melodyne finally arrived today from Germany. I've been waiting almost two months to try it out. I was blown away by the demo at Winter NAMM 2002!

I'm starting a new project tomorrow. Maybe there will be a good reason to use Melodyne for the upcoming work. Otherwise, I'll have to wait until the project is over. Sometime in the next month though, I'm going to have some fun with this thing!

Enthusiasm powers the world.

I finally got a MOTIF7. Funny thing is, this single purchase has given me the biggest case of G.A.S. I've had in years. Smartmedia cards, keyboard stand, new headphones, a keyboard case... and which PLG boards should I load it up with? hmmm...

And now I just KNOW I need a new computer for running softsynths :D . Oh, and a mixer, some studio monitors, some studio furniture...

Could someone please help me explain this to my wife?

Count me in for a new PC, too. Mine's adequate for wares I'm currently running, but not fast enough to upgrade from Cakewalk PA9 to Sonar, nor to really get into running multiple apps at once ...

I'm happy with hardware I've got (gasp! never thought I'd say that) but I do want something that makes 303-ish noises. Maybe an Electribe A since they're reasonably inexpensive, or maybe a copy of rebirth? any other recommendations?

I thought getting the QS71 would cure me of GAS. It hasn't....

now I'm looking for a small, portable PC which has an expension slot for a really good sound card. Its tasks:

USB MIDI patching using a Midiman 4x4

NI's B4 Hammond emulator

Emagic's EVP88

Maybe a soft modular synth (such as Vaz)

I've noticed there are no currently available systems that truly meet this requirement in what I consider a reasonable price range.

These are both great solutions for 303-ish noises. I probably lean more towards the electribe-A - I love its sound and I can get my hands on it.

My newest acquisition came yesterday, a humble keyboard stand. I had been using the same Ultimate A-frame stand for, hmmm, 18 years now, it was just wearing out, the bag was shot, but its worked well for many, many weekend gigs. Thanks to many of you singing its praises, I now have a Standtastic stand, and am very impressed with it. Smaller footprint, much sturdier (steel vs aluminum) and very quick to set up, now I just need to carve a bracket to mount a Hotspot on one side, and I'll be set.

I've avoided buying anything for several years now, but I'm looking really hard at the new Proteus Keys, and it's only $899 compared to the $2,000 I've paid for every other synth I own. And a conga. I've always wanted a conga, even though my rhythm is weak. Someday.... ;)

No doubt you'll be happy with the standtastic stand. I've had mine for a year and a half now and my only complaint is that the slides in back can start sticking - just make sure you don't yank it open too fast too often.

My Emu B3 module arrives today, and this after I've recently bought a Roland KC-300 amp, Alesis QS-7.1, gig bag, and Cakewalk Homestudio 2002. All I need now to really cure my GAS is a Fostex VF-160 or Yamaha 2816, mics, a headphone amp, and uhhh. . .about

2 grand to pay for it all.

Just had another GAS attack, picked up a GT Vipre pre-amp. All I can say is WOW! Oh, and I finally recieved an Alesis AirSynth; it won't replace my theremin for anything melodic, but for ambience and techno sounds it's pretty damned cool.

Just about completed setting up a ProTools HD3/192 rig w/GigaStudio. Just a few more days of wiring and it will be done. Can't wait!!

I am impatiently waiting for my B-3 and Leslie that I recently bought. They should be here by April 1st, and I really can't wait for that terrible twosome to arrive. I also recently picked up an Oberheim OB-8 and OB-12 - Very Cool.

I'm in the process of finishing up a deal to buy an Oberheim OB-4 SEM and OBXa from the original owner. Both are pretty much mint and that deal should be done by the end of next week. The OB-4 is flawless except for some scratches on the top cover Tolex, but oh the sounds.

On the waiting for new gear side, I'm on the list for Hartmann Neuron, Waldorf Q Plus and Access Virus C Keyboard, all of which should be satiating my G.A.S. by May and June. :)

Life is good!!! :) I only need more time to spend with all the fun toys and it would be perfect!

I want either:

24 track HD recorder.(Alesis, Tascam, Mackie, Fostex?)

Digital mixing desk.

Or.

Mac G4.

Logic, Cubase?

Audiocard, audio interface?

have not decided where to go yet.

But the computer way will probably be more expensive since I then need plug-ins, softsynths etc.

Go for Logic and the EXS24, EVP88 and other synths. When you have the funds, then go for a good digi console and the MX2424.

Ain't it great? I've had mine for about six months now - I just adore the thing. Have you tried the instrument input yet? It does wonders for basses...and synths...:D:cool:

Dave -

I haven't tried the instrument input yet, but I can't wait to try it on bass. I've been using a Peavey VMP-2 for synths (not bad at all), but for now most keyboard recording I do is grand piano or Hammond. I guess I ODed on synths temporarily - these things go in cycles. I might fire up the old ARP Odyssy and see what the Vipre does for it.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just had a double and it blew my tax return away. All the planning I have done to buy another keyboard gave way to a set of Event PS8's. It was time to get some decent monitors. The Events may not be the best, but they seem to be excellent for the price and have decent low end at low volume. I plan to follow them up with a set of Sennheiser HD600 headphones for any critical final mix.

The second pain resulted in XM radio for my car. I wish I had this ten years ago. 5 minutes of the world channel and I was extremely happy with the purchase. After years of nothing but 80's, country and gospel on local radio this is Heaven. Just in time for a 12 hour drive to Florida, and then a 12 hour drive back.

Robert

(Now that I am broke I may forget the Triton Studio I was considering and pick up an Electribe A instead.)

Recently I got Tascam's CDRW4U. Despite the fact that it was quite overpriced here (in Estonia), I still am very satisfied with this machine so far. Before the purchase I mixed my music to consumer MiniDisc's... Now I mix my stuff directly to CD's (CD's-RW). Hopefully with better sound quality.
I am back.

This may sound pitiful to many of you (and that's fine) but I finally decided to splurge on a Roland Keyboards of the '60s and '70s sample board, and am delighted with it. No, it'll never be a real B3, Farfisa, Wurli or Mellotron but it's a nice little consolation prize for having shown up to the party 30 years too late.

Not at all. Remember, most of us that purchase a lot have been through the "young and broke" or the "starving musician" phase. Good for us, if you are smart enough to work a synth and creative enough to play, those qualities go a long way towards a good job with good pay. I wonder if anyone has done a study comparing day job salaries of keyboardists and those of various other musicians.

By the way, that is my favorite expansion board. Very useful.

Just so you're aware, those classics still exist and are available - often at bargain prices if yo shop carefully. I just passed on purchasing a well-priced Rhodes88 MkI because I just don't have anywhere to put it anymore! Which is the advantage of the Roland card - you're not stuck hauling a 275lb Hammond around :)

Rabid, yes -- I'm not young and starving (there are people in many places in the world who will pose for that poster much more effectively than I), but I've wanted that board for literally years now, finally got to a point where it made sense to spend the money on it (and where I had that money to spend! I admit it, I'm not Croesus). And in some ways that makes it all the more precious to me.

And yes, coyote, ROOM is another thing you need to have lots of money to have, and I don't have a lot of that, either, so having approx. 60 semi-B3s, Rhodes, Wurlis, Farfisas etc. packed into credit-card space is an achievement and precious again from that point of view.

I will never be able to fool myself these are "the real thing" -- heck even the smell of old Tolex on a warm day is part of what makes an instrument real, you'll _never_ get that with an emulation -- but for what I do, they're just great.

Some have complained about the subtleties of "a bunch of patches that sound the same" but I really appreciate the extra care that went into capturing at least some of the range of what these instruments can sound like.

Best,

rt
