Who's from SoCal?

Recommended Posts

I'm just about to return to the area after my stint in college life back east. I've been noticing how many southern California residents we have posting on the board.. so I figured I'd post this thread and just sort of set up a roll call, (but please please please don't make any references to that stupid call in rap thing from The Beat") to see how many people there are in the area. So post if you're in the area, and give a general city or specific city depending on your tastes.. Maybe something like this:

I'm in L.A. County, my crib is in the infamous quake town of Northridge in the North SFValley. We also host most of the pornoography industry (though I guess that's more in Chatsworth) and I'm pretty sure we've also got the best two composers for animation - Shirley Walker (Batman) and Alf Clausen (Simpsons).

Anyhow, once we know who's in town, maybe we should do something so daring as to leave the anonymity of the internet behind and have some sort of get-together.

Live in the South Bay, work in hell. I mean, Montebello.

You know, after living in SoCal for about 27 years, I never knew where Montebello was until I was forced at gunpoint to work here. That should tell you something.

But I can see the ocean from my living room window when I get home at night, so it's worth it.

I'm not from LA but I've been living here for 15 years...I own a nice house in North Hills, have a beautiful wife and a 2 year old son.

My brother lives 10 minutes away from me in Granada Hills, he built a studio in his garage where I keep all my gear.

Oh, and I happen to work in the Porn industry for one of the largest companies as a web designer.

I thought rocker/composer Danny Elfman did the Batman scores.

Maybe we should have a photographer take an image of that trombone session - I think the technical term is a "head shot" - and we can put it on the cover of Dave's compilation album. Working title: Bona Fide

Danny Elfman did the theme song to the Simpsons and the scores to the Batman movies. I am talking about animation here: Shirley Walker's work on Batman the Animated series/Batman&Robin/BatmanBeyond is some of the most inspiring movie-like music for one of the best serious animation serieses on t.v. Alf Clausen is the one who creates the everyday music on the Simpsons, also a classic of tv and scoring.

Neither, actually. I do prefer the women out here (more brunettes, I am not attracted to blondes and despise bleach blondes) and I love the winter (since I take public transportation and don't drive) but I'm sick of the people I've lived with out here and tired of being away from family. What's funny is that I may end up coming back to this spot exactly to work at Kurzweil R&D, since I didn't manage to do an internship while in school.

I live in the dead Irvine area smack dab between San Diego and Los Angeles and ten minute from the ocean. Irvine sucks kind of. Too many new money, materialistc folk who would buy a 1985, 190E Mercedes for $3000 just so they can say they drive a Mercedes.

Don't get me wrong though, I love SoCal and I seriously think we take for granted how close the beaches and metropolis areas are. Right now, my favorite activity is to take the 5 Northbound for a little over an hour and spend the day at Magic Mountain. That place is heaven!

Laguna and Newport are pretty cool because they're the only areas in Orange County that are actually ALIVE. Oh, and in my 16 years in OC, can you believe I've never been to Catalina?! But I have been to Vegas 18 times... go figure.

Steve, are you saying you're gonna move around So Cal by "public transportation" and don't drive AT ALL?

Ummmmm... you lived here before, right?????

I'd suggest taking up the harmonica for those long waits for a bus connection... We've got NOTHING approaching useful mass transit... do we?

Since 1983, I've lived in LA county, (Pasadena / Long Beach), Orange County, (Orange / Irvine), and now San Diego, (by FAR the nicest place)... but I have NEVER taken a bus... and I don't think I've ever met ANYONE who has... Even 90 year old grannys drive themselves around...

Good Luck to you... I promise to waive if I see you waiting at a bus stop...

I know you're being somewhat facetious but I've got to tell you about my Dad, he was a trip.

My Dad had horrible eyesight so he never drove... he worked 4-5 nights a week as a Pedal Steel player...he lived in Burbank...

My Dad took buses all over this huge city with his Amp and Pedal Steel...every once in a while someone he was playing with would give him a ride home or to the bus stop but rarely. He never missed a gig or a session, never underestimate the power of determination and necessity.

My Dad got to know the transportation systems available in LA...he made it work...anyone CAN. He was made fun of at times but mostly people were just amazed at his dedication and patience.

He loved the buses though and knew a lot of the drivers by their first name.

I miss my Dad.

Hey Steve44, missed each other by about 5 years- I was living in central LA in '96. Didn't have a car, either. Cars are great, especially for long road trips, but it is very easy to isolate yourself from your neighbors and community when you have a car. There were 2 murders on my street in 9 months, but I never had problems and the people in general made me feel right at home, not something I could honestly say about any of the other half-dozen cities I've lived in in CA.

Well I escaped that hell hole eleven years ago. The first year I moved away I had to return on business about once every month. Sometimes more. Now, I've been able to cut my business trips to LA down to none. I feel fortunate to have "cut the cord". I will never return. I don't know how anyone gets anything done there. The LA negativity hindered my creativity.

steadyb,

Did you go to Van Nuys High? If so what class?

While I agree that in some circles the negativity runs rampant, I've found just as much of this vibe in other parts of the country...I've lived all over the US.

I also think LA has made a bit of a shift in attitude in the last 5-6 years...maybe I'm imagining it but people have been pretty good to each other. NOW, if we can just get these assholes to stop using Cellphones when they drive and stop leasing Off-Road vehicles when they don't know how to drive them properly. LA could be a much safer place.

One thing that has always been constant about LA and really sucks is that so many people are in such a big hurry all the time. I find this is truer with people who moved here than it is with California natives though, what do the rest of you guys think?

Born in Van Nuys, grew up in North Hollywod ('til 7), Northridge/Granada Hills (through H.S.) currently in Woodland Hills/West Hills. Went to Alemany H.S. in Mission Hills (now called North Hills). For a valley, there sure are a lot of hills.

Yes, Steve you are right. I didn't mean to single out LA.

A lot of the new music has a negative edge to it. Every new group seems to have that pissed off attitude. It seems to be a prerequisite. What is it?

I hate to sound like a broken record but I think IT is greed. People are making music to make money, not necessarily anything wrong with this but when it becomes your only motivation the music suffers.

Negative music has proven itself a big money maker, so people are following that lead.

Where this negativity in the marketplace came from initially is a much longer story that I won't try to decipher on this forum...too political http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif.

But I think positive music will and actually does sell...it's just not on TV/Radio much. Bands like Widespread Panic, String Cheese Incident, Dave Matthews...make very positive music and sell out festivals/stadiums...that's a lot of money made from really happy music.

I've always believed you have to start with yourself if you want the world to change for the better...you can't change people but you can effect life in your own circle. One way or another it affects everyone. Make sense? http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

I'm gonna go spend some time with my SON now, doing my part to make the world a better place http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I'm in Santa Barbara, about an hour and a half north of Los Angeles. I'm originally from Vermont, and moved out here in Sept '94 to pursue a PhD in philosophy. It wasn't long before my love of music took (or re-took) over and I found myself doing studio work and playing in bands, which I had done all through high school and college back east.

Southern California is unlike any other place in the country. A "What is it about SoCal, anyway?" thread would be both impossibly long and not directly relevant to music, so I'll keep it to summaries of my own personal experience:

On the downside, there is indeed a culture of deep solipsism and self-inulgence here. (To be fair, I'm around showbiz types and kids who have the time and money to hang out in nightclubs all the time. A nurse ladyfriend of mine is always telling me how skewed my data sample is.) Ironically, it masquerades as some sort of Zen openness. In S.B. at least, there is no shortage of people who will talk your ear off about Goddess, Gaia, and Granola, then drive a measley eight blocks to the gym in their 10-mpg SUV. Perhaps the dream catcher hanging from the rear-view mirror channels spiritual energies that help them reconcile the contradiction, and my unelightened mind doesn't grasp it. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif Santa Barbara also has Manhattan-style cost of living without the Manhattan-style advantages. Try getting a decent bite to eat after 10:00... sheesh!

On the upside, I have met more than my share of sincere, helpful, talented and creative people. This region feels to me like the center of the universe when it comes to the market for composition and audio production skills. Plus, I've been able to forget how to use a windshield ice scraper. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/cool.gif

Ive lived in California since 1987. With the exception of a few months living near Venice Beach and a year in Northern California living near Placerville, the rest of my time has been spent living in the San Fernando Valley. I have lived in Reseda, West Hills, Sherman Oaks, the Hollywood Hills, Burbank, Van Nuys, and Northridge. I lived in Burbank the longest, on Evergreen Street ten houses down from OHenry. I could walk to Enterprise, Evergreen, and Royaltone Studios at that time. Nice neighborhood for the biz. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

I may not be here much longer though. My wife wants to move to NYC. Well see...

Enthusiasm powers the world.

I grew up on the East Coast, and made jokes about living in LA my whole life. I moved to SF in 1992, because I thought (and still do) that is was the most beautiful city in the US. MY responsibilities at Alesis made me move to SoCal in 1997; and, frankly, I like it a lot better than I thought that I would. There are all sorts of different pockets of all sorts of different cultures, and it seems to be pretty easy to find one that suits you...we did (I live in the Thousand Oaks area in Ventura county).

I quite like it here now, and will probably stay here unless given a really good reason to leave.

...and yes, I think that a SoCal get-together would be a very cool thing.

Is Kobe Bryant not the most talented basketball player to ever grace the court?

Hey Dave, My sister owns a house in Thousand Oaks...I always thought that area a bit snobby but I won't hold it against ya http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif.

Quite a few LA residents here...it would be interesting to meet up somewhere...I'm a little afraid Synthfool might beat me up though...I'm a skinny runt http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif, no hard feelings ok? http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/cool.gif
