getz out
Homeboy is just buying it because it has LEDs. Actually, Bump, give Chad some work to do; tell him that you want the folks at Alembic to put in a chaser-program so the LED's cycle like a good light-show and THEN you'll buy the bass. Now THAT would be hot.
dcr
What we must not forget, however, is that this is a John Paul Jones model, and that's a package deal. Bump, you have of course seen the "How the West Was Won" DVD. Specifically, the 2nd disc. More specifically, the Knebworth footage. I think you can see what this means for you. Once you've bought this bass, you're committed to shoulder-length hair, a pageboy 'do, and a really big, really white, really big & white pant suit. Oh, and a really cool cleft chin. http://www.cd-bootleg.com/zep_kneb.jpg Booya.

Whacked
$9K is a lot of dead presidents. Too bad that model doesnt have JPJ's symbol like on the back of the pic DCR linked. Love the way it looks tho.

But, yeah, the looks of the instrument sure have an effect. I started playing "Spain" when Chad was showing me the different tone controls and he made the comment that the bass comes with "all the extra notes". I'm NOT paying $9000 for that thing!! It's still a very hefty sum of money, safe to say that I could order two basses from Mr. Lull for the price I'm paying; but it's not $9000. It plays even better than it looks. It really does. It's amazing. The neck was the deal sealer. I usually/historically do not like the necks on Alembic basses. They always feel just a bit off in my hands. This bass has a radius and width that were spec'd by JPJ and I must say that guy sure knows a good profile when he specs it. It's super fast and extremely comfortable. I was comparing it to a guitar player friend of mine with the Ibanez shred guitar necks that were on all their instruments in the late 80's and early 90's. REALLY fast and just begging for all the notes you could possible muster in as short a time span as possible. I still can't believe I'm actually going to pull the trigger on this thing. I just hope now that no one else can buy it or put a deposit on it before I get a chance to next week.

SteveC
So Bump, are you going to keep the other basses or is selling them part of the financing? Will you need or use anyting else after the Alembic comes into the fold?
Tenstrum
Man! I could never pay that much for a bass! I would be afraid to play it! I'm pretty hard on my instruments...My 8 month old Yamaha already has several dings and scratches on it. If I did that to that Alembic, I think that I would cry... More power to you Bump! And be sure to post some MP3s. You kick serious ass as it is! Can't wait to hear you play that thing! Tenstrum "Paranoid? Probably. alexclaber
Can you not get one with a more ornate body design? I played an Alembic Series II (I think) once - it was very nice but so it should have been for £10k!!! (And that's almost $20k) I do like really high end basses but having got my old Warwick so cheaply I find it hard to splash out on an incrementally better (different?) instrument which costs so much more. I'm glad to see that you don't suffer from that problem! I wouldn't say no to one of these or one of these or one of these (+ extra string) In the meantime I'm looking forward to getting one of these... tarkus
I have the same kinda jones (no pun intended) - I took the best road and had a custom made for a fraction of the Alembic tag minus the lighted frets and got somethin that sated the GAS in me. Good Luck!

wraub
I usually don't buy gear unless I've sold something else. musicfiend
why does GAS always come around xmas with the rising GAS prices(up to 9k) i think ill be broke(and playing the bass of my dreams) in no time Hiram Bullock thinks I like the band volume too soft (but he plays guitar). Pernax
Nice soon-to-be score Bump! As has been said many times, with such a monster you're not only paying for a great bass but also a unique work of art. And I'm confident that in your hands it will also turn into a lethal, yet groovy weapon which will burninate the peasants like the fiery flames of hell, or something like that... I'm starting to feel a strong 6-string GAS, but it's yet undecided on which side of the Atlantic the future pride of the stable will come from... If we go to the west, there's always stuff like this or this and this which might be worth investigating. Also something like this could do the trick, only with an added string of course. If the exchange rate of the dollar plummets even further, I think I could get all of those for the price of a Big Mac and have still enough change left to get me a big Slurpie for dessert... Then there's stuff like this and this a bit closer to home, choices choices choices... (up to 200 characters) You may use UBBCode in your signature. motionsideBASS
that's a bad @ss bass, no doubt, for that price it better play and sound good, lol If I bought that today, I would be in divorce court tomorrow. David www.motionside.com
coyote
I think only single guys can get away with that kind of purchase. Anyone with a wife would be getting the "you could have bought me diamonds" scowl for months if he dropped $9K on a bass.
