  1. Seems like you have your answer and it’s resolved itself. If some of the old guys would fit in a new band bring them along.
  2. Indeed very sad news. Like many of us old timers, I have known Jeremy as an online friend anyway, since around 2005 maybe. A long time. We chatted a lot and he had some great advice and insight. When I said he had passed my wife knew who I was talking about l, so for an online connection, I guess it was a fairly good one. I feel bad that we kind of lost track when the big collapse of the lowdown happened years ago. I wish his family well. He will certainly be missed.
  3. Tiny Desk concerts (at "home" or in the NPR office cubical) are the best thing to happen to music in a long time.
  4. I believe the Shuttle can handle the input from a piezo pickup. They also have a great DI built in. I'd say just use that.
  5. Well, for most gigs I use IEM's and no amp. I have a Tuner, Empress Bass Compressor, Bass Big Muff for some dirt, and a REDDI. When I need an amp I have a Genzler MG350/12T-V combo.
  6. I haven't done one for a while. I've certainly settled down a lot from 15 years ago. Anyway, I think I posted my Roscoe Classic P that my wife got me for Christmas a couple years ago. Great bass. Actually got me to like a P bass and has become my main bass for many things, especially the classic rock and some singer/songwriter gigs. Also my go to for jazz quartet type gigs. I actually sold my Roscoe fretless as I just wasn't playing it. Still have the Roscoe Century 5 Koa. That's a forever bass. Every time I bring it out after playing something else for a while I remember why it was/is my #1 after 10 years. My new one from a couple months ago is a Sadowsky. I've had a couple in the past and liked them. I wanted a more "jazz" tone for some things (the Roscoes don't have a "jazz" tone to my ear) and those things also "required" a B string. Most jazz basses, and especially 5's, are heavy and weight is a thing with me. Fortunately(?) this bass was available. It's a Sadowsky Metro Express from Japan. 5JJ hum cancelling pups and Sadowsky preamp with VTC. Beautiful sage green and morado board. Alder body, maple neck. 8.0 pounds on the nose which is really good for a 5 string jazz bass. The neck is a little wider (both ways) from my Roscoe so it's a little different feel. Roscoe 5 is 35" scale, 18mm spacing. The Sadowsky is a 34" scale, 19mm spaced bass. It's a great bass that I'm getting use to more and more.
  7. Yeah, the first album is the best from these guys. The new stuff is very different and "pop" to me. Not that it's bad to be "pop" but I just don't want to hear that from M5.
  8. I think those are great basses. I almost bought one.
  9. I use a Yamaha MODX6 for bass synth stuff in the cover band. 24K Magic, I wanna Dance With Somebody, things like that. Seems like playing bass synth/keys is almost a requirement these days. I know there are some that do it and do it well with pedals, but I do think there's a difference in the way you play the parts.
  10. Daughter had it last week. The rest of us are fine. Everyone vaccinated. Just bad luck I guess. Kids are elligable for their booster next week so we'll get that done at that time. We're staying masked - even though my school is lifting mask mandates as we have kids out and hospital full - as we hope to travel soon and don't want covid messing up our plans.
  11. I use a Yamaha MODX6 for my synth needs. :-)
  12. Is there a way to make this more 'iPhone' friendly?
  13. I still have this on my bookmarks. I do try to come and see what's up now and again. I will try to do so more often. I am growing tired of Facebook and am debating deleting my account there. Although I do like a couple groups there, there's just so much negativity. I tend to be on TalkBass and Instagram for my connections to my bass friends and community.
  14. Family is all fully vaccinated. Masks required at school vaccinated or not. No major side affects. Wondering why people are the way they are, selfish and ignorant.
  15. I did add a compressor back into my signal. Went with an Empress MkII and I love it. Even better than the LA-1A I think going into my REDDI. Since I had a little room left (I am still limiting myself to a Nano) I put my Bass Big Muff back on to try at a few gigs once we get playing again this summer. Sonic Research tuner and my Rolls for my wired IEM's and a CIOKS DC5 mounted underneath. Bass sounds amazing through the new Westone UM 50 Pros.
  16. Nice! That's certainly a nice fretless to get started with. My wife has purchased 3 basses for me over the years. First was a Yamaha BB414 P/J which was a great bass. I sold it. I know. The 2nd was a G&L Tribute JB-2. Again, a nice bass and she also got it for a steal. I still have it. I put new pots and wiring and HipShot UltraLite tuners to help with neck dive. I'd like to get different pups in it but haven't pursued that much. They are the same size and not easily drop in replaced. It's not a bad bass. The finish is beautiful and the neck has a little birdseye in it. Plays pretty well. The most recent was a Roscoe Classic Precision passive 4 string. I use this bass a lot. I put TI flats on it. It looks like Pino's bass.
  17. Not quite sure if this is sarcasm or not, but either way, I am always torn. I had a REALLY good compressor (LA-1A) for a while this year. I thought I'd never part with it, but alas, I did. I found that it didn't have as much of an effect when I got my REDDI as it did with a plain DI - like a JDI for example. I used to be almost anti-compressor but it can be useful. I have thought about trying one again, but that would mean using a small board again. If I did, it wouldn't be a tube this time, maybe a Cali76 or something. For now though, I'm gonna stay with my Sonic Research tuner and my REDDI DI. Simple and solid...and it fits nicely into a Pelican case that's easy to carry around.
  18. I've never really liked delving into effects and I really think that many times the effect get lost in the FOH mix. Maybe I just haven't done it properly or our FOH has sucked. I think we have a nice system so it's either me or I just don't care for an effected tone. I find I seem to serve the music/band/mix best if I have a solid tone and play well. Bass --> REDDI --> FOH/IEM's seems to be working for me these days.

  20. I go back and forth, but mostly forth - no pedals. I find that a lot of effect gets lost by the time it gets to the FOH and the room. I also find that they are more obvious and useful when my guitar player (or synth/keys guy) uses them. I generally just try to lay down a solid foundation and groove with the drums. I have a tuner and a REDDI at the moment. It would be nice to have a filter for Can't Stop the Feeling or a chorus for Don't Stop Believin but to have a board and pedals for maybe 4 tunes a night seems like a waste or more trouble than it's worth. I've debated a multi effect to save space and money and have "good enough" effects for what I need.
  21. Some good "DNA" in that old Genz Benz stuff. The new Genzler stuff is even better.
  22. I'm always torn by this topic. I have 3 Roscoe basses made for me. I love them. They play themselves, like butter, all the cliches. Could I "get by" with a lesser bass? Sure. Would they sound like my Roscoes? Maybe close enough for most. I used to think I didn't deserve basses like this, but I've gotten over that. I enjoy each of them. I also have a G&L Tribute JB-2. It's a really nice bass - for the price. The maple board even has a grain to it. It's a little heavy, but no more than many jazz basses. I did put new Hipshot Ultralite tuners on for better intonation and some weight reduction. The finish is beautiful. If it had to be my only bass I'd certainly be able to gig. I wish that "cheap" basses were as good back when I was younger as they are ow. A beginner can get a really decent bass for just a couple hundred dollars. My first "cheap" bass was maybe $500 or more. A Hondo. It wasn't that great.
  23. Yeah, I remember getting the Fingerstyle Funk VHS years ago when I was playing in a horn band that did 7-8 TOP tunes. Not many players make such a unique contribution.
  24. I've always been a less is more guy. That's why the Nano with the LA-1A, my tuner and my Rolls box for my IEM's.
