How about James Jamerson on the Motown hit _____________________ (insert your favorite here). Some of my favorites are "Ball Of Confusion" or "Can't Get Next To You" by the

Temps. Or How about "I Was Made To Love Her" by Stevie Wonder.

I really enjoy listening to Stuart Zender. His playing in "Travelling Without Moving" (the song) and "Deeper Underground" really drives both songs. :D

Rig:

Ernie Ball Musicman Sterling

Fender Deluxe V (Bartolini pickups and BTB-01 preamp)

Schecter Diamond Series Model T

Eden WT-400

Avatar B410 NEO

Boss ME-50B

"I Was Made To Love Her" - that was pretty good. So many of Jamerson's lines had that funky "delay to the root" feel.

Since BP had Jack Bruce recently, I always liked what was going on in "Badge" (though there are many others :D ).

And McCartney in.. in.. "I'm Only Sleeping", "Do You Want To Know A Secret", "Something" (though there are many others :D ).

"Roundabout" floored me the first time I heard it. Thought it was a Clavinet part.

A couple favorite bass lines are:

- "Danny's All Star Joint" on the first Rickie Lee Jones album (who was that, Chuck Rainey?)

- Pino Pallidino on "We Take Mystery to Bed" from Gary Numan's "I Assasin" (through Paul Young, Seal, etc., Pallidino never fails to interest me)

- Tony Levin on Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up" (hell, on anything he's ever played with Gabriel)

Actually Ruud, the song is called 'I Wish' from the album (boy am I showing my age) Songs in the Key of Life. Some of my favorites are:

1) Any Motown where James Jamerson played bass.

2) Any Stevie Wonder - I always thought he should be an honorary bass player. Phenom musician.

3) Any Parliment/Funkadelic - 'da original bomb.

4) Keith Jarret - Tokyo '96. The acoustic bass is slamming.

5) Any Fred Hammond

6) Any Steely Dan

7) Graham Maby on Look Sharp

Help me I can't stop ... too many great bassists and too little time/bandwidth

I don't know about best ever, but some of the ones that were an inspiration to me personally:

John Paul Jones: "The Lemon Song," "In My Time of Dying"

Dougie Thompson: "School," "The Logical Song"

Roger Glover: "Lazy"

Stanley Sheldon: everything on the live Frampton album (PF has had a weird career; but Sheldon could definitely hold down the bottom)

Chris Squire: "Leave It," "Yours Is No Disgrace" (incredible!!), "Siberian Khatru"

Geddy Lee: "Tom Sawyer"

Paul McCartney: "Drive My Car," "Taxman"

Gosh, I feel old...

Tom Capasso, it is good to see you mention Jack Bruce. When I first started learning to play it was by playing along to the live cut of "Spoonful" on the Wheels of Fire album. I think I wore that record out...it makes my arthritis act up remembering LP's.

"Stuck in the Middle with You" by Stealers Wheel (Tony Williams)

"Forget-Me-Nots" by Patrice Rushen (Ready Freddie Washington)

"I Want You Back" by the Jackson Five (Wilton Felder)

"Something" by the Beatles (Macca)

Here's something controversial: Jamerson's the best bassist ever, no doubt. That said, my favourite Motown lines are Bob Babbit lines:

"Mercy Mercy Me" by Marvin Gaye;

"Inner City Blues" by Marvin Gaye;

"Tears of a Clown" by Smokey and the Miracles.

Of course, Babbit admits that he learned from the master himself.

By the way, John Deacon played bass with Queen.

Yeah, I'll second McCartney on George's "Something". The bass really carries that song...

The Temptations "Ball of Confusion"...who was the guy that laid down all of those great Motown tracks? It seems I read an article about him once...

Jaco's cool little solo on Ian Hunter's "All American Alien Boy".

There are many other phenomenal bass lines...

Hey, it's not settled. There are a lot of legitimate sources that say that Carol Kaye, not James Jamerson, laid down a lot of those Motown bass lines.

Anyway, I've always been partial to the Jackson 5's "I want you back" and McCartney's "Silly Love Songs."

Good bass lines tend to get sampled.

"Super Freak" by Rick James (bassist unknown) - sampled for "Hammer Time" by M.C. Hammer

"Under Pressure" by Queen/David Bowie - sampled for "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice

Any others??

I love to play lines from stuff like tv shows. it is always fun to able to know what you are playing without having to listen deeply to a song. also anything by the smashing pumpkins is fun to rock out to!

Might as well as The original Cosby show and Ironsides too ;)

Q can really arrange/compose for tv/film. His autobiography is pretty good so far (early Christmas present). That Barney Miller line is one of my favorites. Good warm-up tune.
