Yep. Hee Hee! I 'member them days. Actually had an AOL account back then. And our computers ran on kerosene.

Congrats, and here's to ten more (when our computers will run on anti-matter)

Happy 10th anniversary, Craig! (And everyone else. ;) )

I was unfortunate to really begin conversing with people on AOL's chat rooms just after the SSS was drummed out. Talk about low signal-to-noise ratios! Unfortunately, it was several years before I discovered this place at its' new home. I can't believe it has been just about 4 years for me!

I've learned a lot from all of you and had a great time (mostly) listening to the true experts, lay people as well as the ever present peanut gallery. (I can hear Tedster's response already.. "Guilty as charged!" :freak: as well as several of you typing, "I resemble that remark!" Most people here overlap into several of these labels which makes this a wonderful place to listen, talk, and swap information musical and otherwise. :thu: And occasionally we are openly graced by legends in sound recording and music performance.

Then there's our esteemed moderator, who I guess might object to this, but I've always seen as a living legend as a technical/musical magazine writer. I've been reading columns and articles by Craig for about 20 years. The word "guru" usually describes Craig's reputation as a knowledgable source of information on the latest gear. :thu:

Here's to the next 10 years of SSS! :thu:

Wow. Congrats and thanks.

I wonder if there is a web hall of fame somewhere? I'll bet only a very few non-commercial forums remain active for a decade.

I also wonder how many of the original participants are still with us??

In my few years here Ive seen some good folks come and, unfortunately, go.

Lets call em all back for a reunion party.

Craig , Perhaps you should choose the top 10 topics/posts of the decade an post them.

Kinda like a "greatset hits of SSS" - just for fun. I'll bet very few substantive discussions are obsolete. Even with all the technology details changing as they do - the fundamentals remain the same.

Hey i can recall thinking Lee was a guy for a few months (pre avattar). Tedster welcomed me after my first post - then I pissed him off (yes it can be done) by suggesting his football talk was out of scope (all this before Craig clarified the open mission of SSS). Ah those were the days.

All your posts are belong to great. ;)

Found the Bass forum on a whim, having never done the online forum thing, but the adverts in Bass Player looked interesting. Found the SSS after that.

Definitely the best of the music forae on the web, always fun, usually informative, sometimes enlightening. :) Plus, sometimes we talk about music..!

I look forward to the 20th anniversary!

And many more... :D

Thanks to all the forum heads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Peace,

wraub

I'm a lot more like I am now than I was when I got here.

Great idea! There's a LOT of people missing from the AOL SSS. I started posting pretty early on, but I don't remember when...it as sometime around early 1995, I think, when it was associated with the Velvet Rope.

And when AOL was going to jettison SSS, I remember a number of people saying that SSS was the only reason that they had their AOL accounts! I dropped my AOL account months after SSS left.

I bought a copy of "Electronic Projects for Musicians" sometime in a decade that started with seven. I was thrilled that the author was hosting a musician-oriented project on AOL, which I, in the mid nineties, had apparantly mistaken for the internet.

AOL lost me as a customer when I got several "You can't get there from here" screens after trying to access the new SSS website. I remember there were Sunday night chats, right?

Ha, ha! I discovered the MusicPlayer forums through

George Massenburg's Professional Recording Forum. (RIP) My first month there I had difficulty with neighbors whose car stereos weren't particularly loud, however, the bass shook my house when they parked in the driveway and played the stereo. Having failed to reach a peaceful solution with them, I posted my first topic, "Bass morons..." I wanted other professionals' ideas on how to tweak noise ordinances to reflect this problem which lawmakers don't understand how to address. It took mear minutes before Alphajerk started the verbal attacks. :D No intelligent discussion on the issue, just ranting. Others, however, chimed in with interesting ideas and I was hooked. Shortly after Nika's "96K" thread reached 15 or 20 pages, I grew weary of the overly technical discussion, with notable exceptions, and began hanging here more often.

The rest is history. I'm addicted. On topic, off topic, I don't care. Just as long as it doesn't resemble those AOL "music studio" chat rooms, as was often the case just before the SSS Political Party spun off most of the political "discussions".

I'm just happy to have a place to discuss music, recording and life with people who are as inspired or even more passionate than I about our love of sound, composition and the stuff that makes it possible to play and record it. :thu:

But you made Tedster mad, Kendrix?? I've seen a few comments (which will go un-recycled out of respect) that draw Mr. Hoffman's ire. Did you cut down a tree in his yard, Mr. Neighbor? ;):D

Thanks Craig. While it was very gracious of you to thank everyone, the most important person this couldn't have happened without is you!

Now in tribute, here's my first post (and your first reply to me) at the current SSS:

Topic: Welcome Back From The Dead! :D

I'm so excited to have rediscovered this forum alive and well after it was banished from AOL. I used to frequent SOS (sic) in its AOL days and I was very upset when AOL dropped this service.

I eagerly returned repeatedly to SOS's (sic) subsequent shelter at 3D Audio awaiting word of a new home, but never found it until now.

It looks like I have some catching up to do! I'll be back here often to see what's what.

Thanks again, Craig, not only for your time, energy, and devotion, but also for you kind, friendly, and giving nature as well. :thu:

Wow in 95 I didn't have a computer and had vaguely heard about something called the internet.

Well, since we're posting how we got here.

Lesee.......

Well for me, it all started in '90 when I got my PC (386sx 16mhz) with a 2400 baud modem and a collection of about 5 local phone numbers to BBS's -of which 2 or 3 worked. One was a 17 year old kid who operated it out of his bedroom, and we became friends. Another guy had one with some games, a place to chat, and this thing called "Echonet". Echonet had tons of topics that the sysop could subscribe to, and one was for MIDI.

It was so intriguing to me that every night these computers would automatically make calls to each other and transfer all the messages for the day, and that this network spanned the world. I was blown away the first time I got a reply from a guy in Tokyo. The other cool thing was that this was a FREE service. These were run by hobbyists who paid to have 1 or more phonelines set up, and allowed people to use their computer to host chats, and maybe trade a file or two. It was really cool.

Then a couple of years later, I read in Keyboard about this musician's group called PAN.

PAN was supposed to be free to subscribe to, IF you were a Keyboard subscriber. But, it was a long-distance call, and as I recall, they charged some obscene rate by the minute. Whatever it was, it was more than I had to spend at the time.

Then came the Internet in the mid 90's, which was this unbelievable mode of communication. Never before had I seen so much pornography. It was like I'd died and gone somewhere weird. I had no idea there were so many exhibitionists in the world. Jennicam was like the original 'Reality TV'.

Would she be sitting at her computer?

Would she be sleeping in her bed?

Would she be naked?

Would she be picking her nose?

Ya just never knew!

Ah, the Internet was so innocent back then.

A lot less advertising and banner ads back then too.

I didn't discover MusicPlayer until 2000 or 2001. It was some blurb in the 411 section of Keyboard.

I logged on and I think I lurked for a while. Then I started to post a bit.

I recall getting kind of pissed off because I'd ask -what I thought was- a good question and pretty much get ignored, and then this character who called himself "The Wewus" started posting threads about NOTHING....and he's get tons of replies! I couldn't figure it out!

Anyway, I think I probably sat quietly and cursed to myself about it. Then one day I must have mentioned it in a post somewhere because this dude called 'Tedster' (who only had maybe 8000 posts at the time) decided to create a thread in my honor and call it "Super 8 Appreciation Day".

I was mortified, and I've been here ever since. :)

Super 8

10 years? Really? Wow...

This community remains one of my favorite places to waste...umm, I mean spend my time. As one of the people who has been here since the AOL days, it has been wonderful to see it evolve under Craig's masterful guidance. I have no doubt that SSS will continue to flourish, and I'm pleased and proud to be able to be a small part of it.

Besides, how cool is it to know that we go almost anywhere in the world and have friends there?

As mentioned in another thread, there is already a NAMM dinner in the works . If it ends up turning into an SSS 10th anniversary thing, that'd be pretty cool.

Of course, that would require Craig's presence...

Yea. Who knew when I showed up a week late to register and was member #185 that it would grow to be over 40,000 strong? All of a sudden 185 seems pretty early.
