SSS: Jan 2005 is the Tenth Anniversary!!

Recommended Posts

Yes, it's been a decade of SSS, which started on AOL in January of 1995. Thanks to Anne Abernathy, who started it all (she's the Olympic luge competitor, long story), Lynn Fuston who set up the SSS homeless shelter when AOL kicked it out for being TOO successful (another long, and fairly incredible, story), Paul Gallo/Marty Porter for resurrecting it as part of the original MusicPlayer.com, Rob Kudyba for getting it to actually work from a tech standpoint, the guys at Canned Bananas for believing in it (with a big shout out to Dendy for keeping the machine working), and also, special thanks to our esteemed fearless leader Louise Rogers for not killing it despite the fact that "I've been to your forum, and it's pure madness!!" She knows there's something special going on here.

But most of all...this is nothing without all of you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Oh yes, and if you think that I'm not going to try to take this to another level...well, that's another subject for another time :)

It's definitely a significant anniversary Craig. I've only been here since the Kudyba days, but have found it one hell of a worthwhile ride.

My fondest memory is flying that jet fighter off the coast of Monte Carlo at one of the moderator get-togethers :thu:

Whoohoo... that's really an achievement.

We all appreciate your efforts, Craig and Love this place.

Why don't we Celebrate this Milestone with the usual Winter NAMM Dinner??? Now we have the perfect excuse :thu:

Good thing I wasn't here in 1995...you wouldn't be able to fit my post count on the page. Good grief...

I'm truly sorry I've been such a mouth...but this place is too much fun, y'know. Thanks for allowing us to try your patience and sanity.

BTW...anyone ever still hear from Rob K.?

Bravo on ten, Craig! Here's to many, many more...

I'll leave it to Craig to answer the archive question. Congrats on the big X.

The only place I know where any of that AOL-SSS content still exists on the web is at my site, and I pulled out some humorous threads to "archive." It will give you an idea of what those "good old days" were like. Here are some links. You can tell how much things have changed in that it sounds like something you'd read today.

There are several threads linked from that page. See how far we've come. We were arguing about Mac vs. PC even back in 1996. I'm so glad we finally resolved that one...

Follow the link at the above site for macvspc. I can't post it here, due to formatting. There's another one about Q-Tips that's worth a read too.

There was a "homeless shelter" at my site for a while, as we waited for the next iteration of Craig's site. And a temp BB was set up as well, though Craig was too busy trying to get the next thing off the ground to attend much there. It's still floating around out there in cyberspace somewhere. I ran across it a month ago. You won't believe how far we've come since then. It's not as bad as cave painting, but it looks pretty primitive now.

Found it.

greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a.tcl?topic=3D%20Audio's%20Music%20Business%20Forum%20(SSS%20Temp)

You'll have to add your own http://www in front of the URL above because this forum won't allow URLs with parentheses. What kind of young stupid web-ster would do that anyway? Guilty as charged.

Pretty rudimentary even by 1997 standards. As I recall, we took all of one day trying to find a substitute home before people started getting scattered to the wind. It wasn't much, but at least the lights were still on.

Jay Graydon, David Bryce, Jay Frigoletto, Dave Robinson. Who were some of the other regulars, Craig?

I actually have a huge amount of it archived. SSS was more than forums, there were also articles, samples, calendar of events, EQ-related stuff, etc. It's all sitting here on various CD-ROMs.

But what to do with it? I have no clue! It has nostalgia value, but you can get the general idea from following the links in Lynn's post.

Thanks again Lynn for everything!

I am very pleased that Jeff, Nursers, Gus, Valky, Lynn, Valky et al all chimed in. To me, these people are the bedrock of SSS.

Thank you for having us Mr. Anderton. (Collectively) we may have different ideologies, views, politics, taste in music, approaches to writing, recording, playing and playa hatin, but we pretty much agree that this place (wherever it be) is solid.

I tip my glass (and hat) to you; to the forumites and friends and family that have passed on; and I wish you as many more years of SSS & life as you desire. Like they said to Charlie Brown (now I'm drunk and rambling); you're a good man.

Happy 10 years, SSS!

I'm proud to have been here for 3 or 4 of them. And I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for such a great bunch of people.

It's also great to know that if I ever went out on a bender and woke up in the middle of nowhere (either in the US or abroad), with nothing but my shoes and (for some odd reason) an internet connection, that there would probably be a forumite nearby who would let me crash on their floor for the night.

Kinda brings a tear to my eye... <sniff, sniff> You people are so sweet.:love:

Cheers to 10 years!!!

The great people I've had the pleasure of conversing with here have enriched my life. Even though I've only been here a short while (4 years), this place in cyber space feels like a home away from home. :thu::thu:

Cheers!

Where you been?

sorry, OT i know but kinda missed me ole buddie Spencer :o:)

(Trying not to hijack the thread)

Christmas saw me buried under a mountain of studio work that didn't give me much online time. It's all in the other thread that I have started - "So much for a vacation"

BTW, it's nice to be missed :)

Cheers!

It's hard to believe that it's been ten years. I was on the old AOL SSS for almost its entire run, and then on Lynn's site as well, and here on Musicplayer. During this entire time, SSS has always had a wonderful, friendly, warm, intelligent, funny, and interesting vibe about it, largely reflecting the moderator. Congratulations!!

I remember finding SSS on AOL and thinking that content like it was a real asset to their service. (Too bad there seems to be little reason to stay with AOL today.)

SSS is still a great asset and it's Craig and the contributors that make it so.

Congrats and thanks, Craig, for hosting the best coffee break/cocktail party on the web.

Congratuations Craig!

I stumbled on this place about three years ago looking for answers to some guitar related questions. I'm continually amazed at the collective expertise here. The blend of veterans and neophytes and the relative lack of obnoxious egos is great. I'd never participated in any kind of forum, BB, or chatroom before I found these forums. I've become an addict now but at least my horizons have been broadened.

Thank you for your patience and hard work.

Here's to another 10!
