As Chick Corea said.....  it don't matter what you play outside it's all about how you come back inside.

This.  Tension without resolution get obnoxious.  Music without any tension can be boring.

There are many devices.  I try not to think of it when I do it. We internalize our theory so we can forget it.   Could be simple percussive tonal clusters or recently I been (probably overusing) using some super locrian tricks.   My stuff works best when I just do it.  New devices sometimes fall flat because they are not instinctive and I think too much.

Need to listen for that G in the intro to "Love Reign O'er Me" now!

It's a guaranteed "wtf?" moment, for sure! By the way, it's very quiet. Easy to miss if you're not listening closely on a good system.

I wonder if the dopamine addiction of outside sounds just leads to the need to go farther outside and away from simple melody. I think about Trane and how he sounded more out than in on later stuff, at least to me. I'm sure the more dedicated fan would say "what? I don't see what you mean".

I don’t know.  I find myself using a lot more tension over time.  Not so much that I use increased tension but that I do it more often.

It may just be  driven by the genres I am playing more often these days but the dopamine idea is interesting.
