jerrythek
Ben is one of the people behind the amazing “Down The Rhodes” book/documentary: https://www.jwpepper.com/Down-the-Rhodes/10428790.item I think you can still find plenty of interview clips from it on YouTube… it has nearly every major player you would associate with the keyboard featured. A wonderful piece of history. I never knew he had that “showroom” - very cool.
ProfD
Excellent video. Dr. Mix is living the dream with these interviews and when it comes to the world of KB gear.😎 1 Quote PD "The greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return."--E. cassdad
I never listen to videos more than a few minutes….. an hour and 15 minutes later I was still watching this one. Absolutely captivating to me! Thanks for sharing. 4 Quote Ludwig van Beethoven: “To play a wrong note is insignificant; to play without passion is inexcusable.” My Rig: Yamaha MOXF8 (used mostly for acoustic piano voices); Motion Sound KP-612SX & SL-512. The Real MC
Fascinating comparison between different eras of Rhodes pianos. My first keyboard was a 1973 stage, a gift in 1978. Good sound but too easily masked by distorted guitars. Spongy action hurt my hands after a weekend of playing on it. Sold it in 1983 and was not anxious to own another for a long time. What got me back into them was the disappointment that sampled Rhodes did not do them justice. Starting about 2005 I got into them again, went through three of them and the one I own now is a "mutt" - a sparkle top that was a lucky find in a store. Previous owner had gutted the original electronics/speakers and swapped out the original felt hammer keyset with the later one with plastic/wood hammers. Combine that with the original Raymac tines, square resonators, and pickups (which have a wonderful dynamic timbre), with the right external tube amplifier, and it's a magnificent piano.
Franz Schiller
Holy moly, that 88 key is –to my ears– one of the prettiest dang things I ever heard!
tapes
That resurrected Zawinul Rhodes sounded so beautiful! Unbelievable work. I also have the coffee table book + DVD, it's very worthwhile if you can still find it. I've played a lot of Rhodes models through the years, but never owned one! A MK8 would be a dream... Curiously, I think the "E" Jay Graydon model they mention later on in this video, is sampled onto Keyscape as the "L.A. Custom E".
