Guitar Nut Files

My coworker put a new bone nut on his acoustic guitar and now wants to deepen the grooves in the nut. He is looking at file sets but dones not want to spend the $70 plus for the set StewMac has. Some sets we looked at on line are very cheap and we both fear they may not work well. I am also concerned that some with 6 files have the smallest as 10 and some of us use 8's or 9's on solid body electrics and the 10 might not work well on a future project. Any suggestions?

He ended up buying welding torch tip cleaners and carefully worked the grooves deeper. Trying it for a week or two before considering doing a little more. We are both hobby types and know like fitting a board better to have to shave it shorter several times and get it right than to hurry and go in this project too deep. Thanks Jim

For the future, you could just remove the nut and sand down the bottom of the nut. That would effectively lower all of the string slots without needing a nut file at all.

Obviously, that assumes that they are all the right depth respectively. If you need to lower just one slot, you'll need some type of nut slot file.

Glad you got it taken care of though. :)
