Dannyalcatraz
Have you looked at the cabinet nominees lately? There are arguably a couple, but they're not economists. Sturgeon's 2nd Law, a.k.a. Winston Psmith
I'm hoping American companies will take them to task over this issue. I know that Fender has moved their mid-line production to Mexico, while Kaman Industries (Ovation, Takamine) and Epiphone have their own plants in China, and those are just the ones I can think of. How much are people willing to pay for the next iPhone, if it comes laden down with tariff costs that add nothing to the value & function of the product itself? Costs will escalate, and sales will fall, neither of which will benefit the industry nor the consumer. "Monsters are real, and Ghosts are real too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win." This is why people who actually understand international economics, i.e. none of the current cabinet nominees, say that nobody wins a trade way. Both sides suffer, for no benefit other than making political points with ones voter base. Scott Fraser
whitefang
And now it seems the move to Mexico might not be a good one for U.S. sales. Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!

Dannyalcatraz
One aspect I've seen only a couple news outlets remark upon is that American trade treaties are one major aspect of our foreign diplomacy for 70+years that has helped keep us out of wars. Instead of opening markets with war as was done in the age of empires, we make trade agreements so we don't have to shoot anyone. The agreements like NAFTA (and lesser ones post 2007) are key to why Mexico's economy has improved enough to slow the tide of illegal immigration and yet Mexico taking its role as a partner in the Drug War seriously. Start a trade war with Mexico, and we'll see an uptick in illegal immigration and a boost in the narcoterrorists' power. Sturgeon's 2nd Law, a.k.a. In a similar vein, shutter the overseas Guitar factories, or make it such that American companies abandon them for lack of profits, we'll also see an uptick in counterfeiting. More "Givsons" and "Fendirs" making their way here. BTW, counterfeiters and smugglers don't pay tariffs & taxes . . . "Monsters are real, and Ghosts are real too.
