DulceLabs.com
I saw a really cool piano when I was watching "Prometheus".. looked it up and found out it was a Fazioli M.Liminal. Very futuristic looking: http://showcasepianos.com/images/Fazioli-Grand-Piano-4.jpg As seen in "Prometheus" (screen grab.. sorry for the low-res): http://oi41.tinypic.com/2zdvqqe.jpg I started looking at other non-traditional piano designs.. I really like this one. It's a Klavins 408: Anyone else have any cool or futuristic looking pianos to share?

DulceLabs.com
Search for an old thread on this. Can't remember when exactly, but it was before your time here. Search for futuristic pianos in the past? EDIT: I did my due diligence and Svengled the forum for "Prometheus piano", "futuristic pianos" and "cool pianos".. came up with nada. Only one thing to do... http://www.quickmeme.com/img/ea/eaaf845200cbfe885bef8302fb6a4c401ad197a357cb86db0ee023369c331823.jpg

wmp
I have simple tastes. I got to play this lovely 1918 D for a while last week. It went back to Andover Academy the next morning with a new pinblock, strings, and a new Renner action. I picked a good day to visit. One heck of a piano. http://b3and88.com/img/model-D.jpg Yeah, I know. OT. --wmp

Instrumentation is meaningless - a song either stands on its own merit, or it requires bells and whistles to cover its lack of adequacy, much less quality. - kanker

Joe Muscara
Yeah, I'm like wmp. My tastes run simple, though I enjoy some of the pre-modern era designs, especially when I see them in movies or something. "I'm so crazy, I don't know this is impossible! Yes.. most of these wouldn't look right most people's home.. except maybe that beautiful Steinway.. probably too big though. The really far-out ones need to be in right setting to "work", like a cruise ship or an ultra-modern condo (or a spaceship ) And speaking of movies.. they trashed a replica of the 1938 Steinway in "White House Down"... http://oi41.tinypic.com/rsczgg.jpg It's another good example of one that would look out of place most anywhere, but looks very nice in this setting: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b2/WHClintonEastroom.jpg
MorayM
I'm a bit of a fan of Matt Bellamy's silver and perspex number: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/38/Muse_2013_Stadium_Tour,_London,_Emirates_Stadium_26th_May,_Matt_Bellamy_on_Piano_2.jpg/640px-Muse_2013_Stadium_Tour,_London,_Emirates_Stadium_26th_May,_Matt_Bellamy_on_Piano_2.jpg (OK, so it's not a real grand, but still pretty cool!) wmp
Hard to argue against that D being cool looking. Indeed, but that's secondary to it being one mighty piano. I'd suspect the Fazioli sounds pretty good, but I wonder about some of those things being more art than piano. The two story upright seems kind of silly. Upright actions can't compete with grand actions. This piano looks pretty traditional, but it has some futuristic stuff going on under the hood. Laminated ribs, fanned instead parallel. Stiffer soundboard. The tail of the soundboard isn't glued to the rim. Like nothing I've ever seen before. It's got sustain for days. I've played a lot of super nice pianos in the last year or so. It's great to be moving out of Dodge, but I will have to come back to visit that piano shop. If I get the place I'm looking at today, I'll be a few miles away from the Mason & Hamlin factory and not far from that D in Andover either. I'm afraid I can't do anything about my piano jones. It's back. I thought I wanted one, but the last time I did that I couldn't stop at one. It's cheaper and easier to play other folks' pianos. --wmp
