What's the MVP in your rig?

I have an Anvil briefcase with USB memory backups, flashlight, Ipad, screwdriver, pen/paper, drum key. Also, a bag in my car with spare power supplies, all sorts of adapters & cables, and a long AC cord. But my MVP is my 1980-something:

2-tier Invisible Stand !

Professional musician = great source of poverty.

For me, this has come in handy in so many ways - not just in my live rig feeding the PA and my monitor, but recording (sub-mixing and monitor manager), adding effects, practicing (iPod+rig+headphones) and running my duo's PA. It has been indispensable, definitely MVP-worthy!

I got a Swirlygig first, but it only attaches to the upper, skinny part of the mic stand. I play sitting down, and naturally I want my beverage lower than my boards in case disaster strikes, so I needed one that attaches to the lower, thicker part.

This is why I always want my mic stand right at the inner-left corner of my lower-most keyboard, and I will do whatever amount of haranguing the sound guy is necessary to get it there. "You'll have more room to move in and out if we put the mic behind your boards." True. Now please put it back where I had it. "It'll look better on the other side." Probably so. But it's going here. "The other guy who plays here always has it on the far side." Unless you want to spend the entire gig personally lying on your back on the floor, holding my beverage up where I can easily reach it with my left hand, leave the damn stand where I put it.

Great topic! This little guy is kind of like my "Swiss Army knife" of gear. I use the BR-800 as a mixer, multi-effects unit, field recorder and scratchpad. It's also battery operated so it fits in good with my "no-AC, no problem" set-up.

Scott,

That's pretty ingenious. I never thought about using a "portastudio" box in that way!

Aw hell... now I'm going to go look at them.

If the latency is decent enough, it could replace a dedicated audio I/O for running virtual instruments!

Yeah I get a lot of use out of it. :)

I forgot it is also has a pretty nice little drum machine built-in, but I tend to use my XW-G1 for that these days.

Also look at the Zoom R-24 and R-8.. they are very good as multipurpose boxes as well.

Logic. It saved me from MIDI Spaghetti and brought everything I wanted most under one roof. I can simply build my "band" and start writing. That's what I've been striving for ever since I first started wrestling with a cheapo Fostex 4-track. Now its a Pink Floyd multitrack deck, a convo reverb and every type of synth but pure additive. As far as I'm concerned, that's calorie-free pizza that still tastes like the standard sin-soaked version.

In my own studio at home, where I do all of my sound design work... while I have a few assorted goodies that bring much happiness, none was more of a game changer than these:

Working in Broadway pits, my UK partner and I actually found this little guy to be immensely helpful. While it doesn't enhance the sound of anything and it's the farthest thing from glamorous.... it does serve a vital purpose and does so with elegant simplicity.

We use one on every rig in every show.

On impulse I bought a pair of these at the local Lowes for less than $3 a piece. The magnets work great and they get really bright. They also have fold out hanging hooks. They blow my ild magnetic LED lights away.

Mine is the best singing partner(s) I've ever worked with in my past musical career. My Digitech Vocalist Live Pro. Always sings on key, precise harmonies, always showed up for rehearsal and gigs, never asked for any money.

Can't beat that.

Cheers!

My new stand, which took me a year to think up. Seems so simple once you have the solution!

You have a CHROMA in the background and possibly the expander as well. If so, AIEEEE!!! That's one of the first synths I ever played that said "Piano" to me, expressively. The synth sounds were impressive, but the emulative sounds are what showed off the very fine keyboard's touch-to-sound curve, which was sweet. I've had workstations for so long now, its been a while since I played a straight-ahead hardware synth for its own sake. Just playing a Chroma for 20 minutes left a very positive mark. It set the bar high.

Aside from my Mac and main Korg, my dual MVPs would be my venerable old SKB 61-key flight case and the two giant USB sticks that contain safeties of my entire sound library and all of my Logic Projects. Totally different, but still like suits of armor.
