Craig, forum technical issue.

Hi Craig. There is a peculiar thing that I have noticed for a long time and meant to say something but kept putting it off. So here goes......

BTW, remembering of course I use a Mac. Maybe Windows users are not experiencing it somehow. Does this happen to everyone?

Also, maybe it's the method I use.

It has to do with if you are editing a post on this forum, and you want to make a word or section of text Bold as well as possibly something else......Underlined or Italics perhaps.

So let's say you want to make this sentence Bold and in Italics.

First thing you do is highlight the sentence.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/Gypsyfingers/Screenshot2011-08-28at123352AM-1.png

Then you select the B button and get.....

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/Gypsyfingers/Screenshot2011-08-28at123415AM-1.png

If you weren't sure about the need to do Italics and previewed it to see how it looked only in Bold, it would be perfectly fine. All Bold.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/Gypsyfingers/Screenshot2011-08-28at124848AM.png

However you decide you do also want to make it Italics as well.

What you should be able to do now is to merely hit the I button, but as you can see, the highlighting no longer includes all the text. The letters c and s are not included anymore.

If you did hit I you would get this......

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/Gypsyfingers/Screenshot2011-08-28at123438AM-1.png

And obviously if you went to Preview or Post, you would end up with.....

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/Gypsyfingers/Screenshot2011-08-28at124015AM.png

I have never come across this anywhere else so I just thought I would let you know. It is easy enough to work around, but I am sure you can fix it and make it easier.

Thanks.

Hmn; Lemmy try this out... I had not previously experienced this, but I'll give it a go, specifically after posting and hitting "Edit" (be right back)...

OK, I'm back: lessee here, does this work? How's 'bout this? Let's try that again... (but with "Strike Through" instead of Italics, just so that the previous UBB Code fully displays). Seems to work alright IF I highlight the selected material again for each treatment, each time...

So, I guess it's working more or less alright from my end of things here; YMMV, of course...

The problem I run into is with the reply window. As long as I'm typing in the original space, it's fine. I can even do bold and italics. . It doesn't matter if I'm using the full screen or the fast reply, when I get to the bottom of the space, the text starts bouncing up and down with every keystroke and hides the last line.

Well I just meant in the regular post window.....not after it has been posted and then editing although I am sure it will still do it on my side.

I meant as one is composing a thread or post.....editing as one goes.

Actually I could have described the problem in one sentence.

Fumbly, try first hitting the "B" button for bold. That will give you two brackets, an opening brcket and a closing bracket. Then click in between them to put the cursor between them. Next, click the "I" button for italics. That should imbed your italics brackets within your bold brackets. Now put the cursor in between the "I" brackets and type your text.

Yeah I will do that if I know I want to use bold or italics as I go. This "problem" only becomes an issue, after the fact...... if I decide I want to alter text already typed.

I just mentioned it because I do it all the time on other forums and it works perfectly. Any text that is highlighted, remains highlighted in it's entirety. So multiple commands are no problem. You could go bold, italics, underline, (strike through even maybe) one after the other without a hitch.

For some reason, here the highlighted area of text seems to move to the left...... right after you make the first command, bold, italics etc.

It's very strange that it's cutting off the end of the sentence like that. Can you try a few more times and see if it's always cutting off at a certain number of characters?

It works fine here. I click on B and it adds the "Bold" tags, then I highlight the whole line again and click on I and it adds the "Italics" tag. If I don't highlight the text a second time, I get the Italics tags added at the end of the sentence (where the cursor is sitting).

Let me know about the line count (including spaces) and I will pass this along to Jim.

I've had this happen, too.

Since I use a number of diff units, it's unpredictable but I have noticed that it sometimes will, sometimes won't occur on any particular machine.

What does that indicate as far as cause ?

I dunno. Its very consistent on mine. What I have to do is to type my post into a Word document and copy/paste it into the reply window.

Yes, that's an idea...it's definitely annoying when it happens.

For a visual typist like me (I have to see what I've typed), it's quite a pain.

I can tell ya it does happen somewhat randomly, sometimes/sometimes not on the very same machines.

I've sometimes had luck closing the browser window & restarting but not always.

In the examples provided, it appears to be an issue with properly selecting the text area before applying formatting tags.Realizing this could be an issue with certain browsers, my advice is to make certain your tags begin and end in the correct order before and after your formatted text.

The following tags are available for your use:
text = Makes the given text bold.
text = Makes the given text italic.
text = Underlines the given text.
text = Will post your text with a line through it (strike through).

Nesting Tags:
text = Makes the given text bold and italic.
text = Does the same thing.

Hope this helps identify where the interface may be falling short. Please provide your choice of browser and OS when reporting these issues.

Guys.........there is an issue here. I'm not totally stupid about how to do these things. I know I can highlight, grab a tag and then highlight all over again and grab a different tag.I know I can just type in the code manually.

What I have been trying to explain is........

1. I highlight a section of text I want to accentuate.

2. I go up and click on Bold

3. I immediately click on Italics right after

On any other forum it works beautifully. It saves one having to either manually enter code or have to highlight the same section of text, every time a tag is to be added.

Other forums....Drag the highlight over the text, Click-Click ...done.

At GP it ALWAYS unhighlights the last two or three items of text.

Just to show you I am not imagining it....here are some other forums. I have to make two posts 'cos it seems there is an image limit.

As you can see........GP craps out in this respect. Sorry about the sloppy selected screenshots for the GP examples. I was getting tired.

Of course, if this is the way it is....no biggie..the workaround is easy....just more time consuming.

I was just trying to bring this to your attention in case it is an easy fix. I'm sorry for all the super annoying screenshots........but I wanted to prove it is happening this way as the general consensus, in most of the replies, seems to be that it is me doing something wrong.

This is exactly what I am talking about. You should not have to re-highlight the text again.........once highlighted, you should be able to click on tags, one after the other-and have them correctly applied. Nothing within that highlight should change until it is unselected.

I have to wonder if the issue with not highlighting the whole line is maybe a Mac thing? To be fair, it is a step more than I get on my PC. With mine, the text is unselected, with yours, it seems to remain selected, but drop a few characters. Perhaps it has to do with the way each machine handles it's cursor location after losing focus...

I can't click on each tag to apply to the same line, either. However, as I mentioned in the previous post, when I apply the first tag, my cursor jumps to the end of the line. Clicking on a second tag then adds the two "start/end" tags to the end of the line.

So I get this if I attempt to add a bold and italics tag to the same line, using the "single select, double click" method:

here is my text

This is a current limitation of the software here. Although, it is possible that one of the future updates may address this issue.

So with yours, if you highlight and select bold.....when it applies the tag, does it also unhighlight the text?

That is so weird that Mac's and PC's handle that differently. I wonder why it only does it at GP and not other forums? Aren't these various forum software's all pretty much standard code?

Anyway, thanks for staying with me on this.

Whether or not the 2 problems mentioned in this thread have causes that exist because of software, hardware or other reasons, I've no idea.

What strikes me is how in the modern world a problem to which we have found solutions, still brings forth such diligence in trying for other solutions.

I have no disrespect for Fumblyfingers.

I've been here long enough to know he's a steady hand and a worthy member but I can't help noticing that this is over having to highlight a section of text on a computer screen twice rather than just once.

Have we really become that impatient ?

I wonder at what other things might've been done with the time expended on this issue.

Certainly somenumber of instances of text-highlighting problems could've been handled...perhaps something more productive, too.

I'm not belittling the problem.

I fully understand the annoyance of niggling little problems that seem to be crying out for, or perhaps to have, solutions that accomodate our desired goal.

I fall prey to that syndrome myself.

I just think it's worth stepping back on occasion to look at the larger frame.

Yes. With mine, it unhighlights the text and moves the cursor to the end of the - previously highlighted - words.

While there are only a few main providers of forum software, every one is written from the ground up. Any common features are generally written into the code by figuring out how it was done and adding it in a new release or update.

This means that UBB software may differ, or have different features than PHPBB software, for example. As features become more popular, they tend to get added in the software updates.

What abt that "Jumpy screen" effect---what might cause something like that ?

Generally, visual issues can be attributed to the video card or it's drivers. However, if the screen is jumping up and down, it may also be the mouse. Either a failing mouse or, if you have a laser mouse, it could be a bit of dust or a hair stuck in front of the lens.

Can you explain, with more detail, what is happening?

In Fumbly's defence, I think he noticed that a function that is available at other forums, doesn't seem to work here. I think it was more of a question of, "is it something wrong with the software or just a missing feature?". More helping to point it out than complain.

As I tried to make clear, I've no criticism, really, of the thread or the things that may bother us, so no "defense" needed.

It's just that sometimes I'm struck by how deeply we've adapted to depending on things being so immediate in the modern world.

When even the youngest of us were children (maybe 20 years ago), we'd have been amazed at how fast things go now.

Craig,

It's ONLY the text in the reply box that does that. The rest of the screen is stable.

Sorry guys, I must have glossed over this. Being summer, I always seem to have a 7 year old at my side, vying for my attention. I sometimes miss things...

What browser are you guys using when this happens? I've tried to replicate it in Firefox and can't get it to happen.

It's amazing how quickly technology took over and became part of our lives. You'd be hard pressed to find a group of people where at least one of them had a cell phone, smart phone or other technological gadget.

When comparing the Rich Text features of other forum systems to our current one; others use a WYSIWYG editor, ours uses UBBCode tags that are parsed when the page is generated. Both methods may look similar from a user's perspective, but are very different in execution.

I couldn't find any reference to this reported issue at UBBThreads, and am not confident that an upgrade will resolve it.

Please be patient with the current system. We are in the planning stages of new things to come. TBA
