02R96
OK, I just got the new issue of GP. I've always heard of The Mars Volta but never heard any of their stuff. So I went to Project Playlist and listened to a few songs. So how would you classify their music? Prog, Experimental, Um... Interesting? Before any Mars Volta fans clobber me I'm not dissing the music, just wondering. Dan "I hate what I've become, trying to escape who I am..." Caevan O’Shite
No clobbering, whether you like 'em or not. I don't know as there really is a classification that fits 'em, other than maybe "prog" ("progressive") rock. I really like their album De-Loused In The Comatorium, though I haven't heard any of their other stuff. Gifthorse
I think they are kind of like stoner progressive rock. Incredible drummer!! I think they are a great, and original band. The guitarist is also very creative. http://flagshipmile.dmusic.com/ http://www.myspace.com/gifthorse
Dannyalcatraz
Definitely progressive rock...IMHO, with some punk elements in the mix. Sturgeon's 2nd Law, a.k.a. Fingerstyle_Jim
I also like De-Loused In The Comatorium, plus most of Frances the Mute. I bought Amputech(sp?) but couldn't get into it, I felt that most of the song ideas were good but the lead guitarist was trying too hard to be "different" and kind of overdid it. They get called prog in most of the press, oh, and I believe the singer and guitarist at least were in a band called "At the Drive-in". Dannyalcatraz
Yeah, ATDI was the band, the ashes of which hatched The Mars Volta. Sturgeon's 2nd Law, a.k.a. Griffinator
I love me some Mars Volta. Really aggressive abstract rock is what I'd call them, the band that took up the torch that Fripp laid down. A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends. p90jr
I was a big At The Drive In fan, just can't get into The Mars Volta that much for some reason... have listened to them, seen them live... just don't move me, though I respect them and what they do very much.
