AAAAH! a discussion about Carry On My Wayward Son - HELP!

sweet dissonance

Recommended Posts

So I have to learn this song to play with a choir in march, and I've got the intro, the chorus, outros, interlude, and bridge down okay, but I just can't get the part right after the 8 bars of piano! It just doesn't seem to match the song at all and no matter what beat or tempo I play at I can't get it! and these tabs (below) are the only ones I can find, all of them are the same! Any suggestions/help?? Much appreciated. Oh, sorry about the horribly uneven tab but I had to copy and paste and I can't get it to line up right when I do that. But if you really need different tabs just google search them.

You're missing a part - directly after the "piano only", there's an "A-G-F-F-G (x2)" (5-3-1-1-3 on the E string, for those who don't know their theory)

I noticed this the first time I looked at tabs for this track a few weeks ago, that they all missed that.

Bass Guitar Tab White Pages. Has the song in both notation and in tab. I find that most tabs are rehashed by someone who lifted someone elses tab and tweaked it ... for better or worse.

Which is one of the reasons they generally are useless.

If you start training your ears you'll be able to figure out all the music you want on your own and not have to rely on other people's bad interpretations of how a song goes.

TABs are sometimes a good starting point, esp if you are in a hurry. But a starting point is all they are. If I'm gonna use it, I assume all TAB is gonna be slightly wrong from the get go and use ears to straighten out the mess.

Thats my TAB typing... transcribed;

If you are using the song as a guided EVEN with the tab I hope you are noticing where the missing part is.

Just give a listen to the song a few times and get a FEEL for it. There might be a method to the madness of a popular song from 20+ years ago.

Good luck at 3:02 of the song where the keyboard solo comes in.

All smart-arse comments aside...use USE U-S-E your EARS!

Listen is going to give you so much more than 'hoping' someones tab is correct, walking into a reheasal and having your choir director looking at you wondering, "what book of notes did he/she get that out of?!?"

But Lug, surely, in your experience, hasn't what the tab helped you with been the easy bit any way . . .and the hard bits you've still had to so on your own?

Sure, but it still can save a bit of time getting started. You just have trust you ears more than the TAB.

We once had a contest to see who could butcher a classic rock song the worst by doing it in a nu-metal format. My entry was:

Way cool! Is that what Nu-Metal sounds like?!

That actually sounds like a stripped-down industrial version.

If it were nu-metal, there'd be big fat 7-string guits and a lot more screaming in there.

I approached it just from the singing-then-screaming aspect, ala Linkin Park. Being older than dirt, I don't pretend to know all things nu-metal, plus I had to whisper when I screamed because it was late and the kids were all asleep at the time.

From the WIKI:

Nu metal was literally a new age of metal. It was a combination of modern "Urban music" and Metal. Nu metal bands would sometimes feature urban styles for example hip-hop, modern guitar effects, freestyle turntables/scratching and on occasion more than one drummer.

Musical traits

Vocals

Nu metal bands often feature aggressive vocals that range from melodic singing similar to pop and rock, guttural screaming and shouting from various forms of metal and hardcore punk, and rapping akin to hip-hop and rap music.

One method of rapping common in nu metal merges rap with "shouting", this form of vocal can be heard on Slipknot's " Distortion and other post-production effects are often added to vocals in the nu metal genre.

[edit] Guitar

Unlike traditional metal, the overall defining trait of nu metal guitar-playing is the emphasis on mood, rhythm, and texture over melody and complex instrumentation, achieved largely through performance or effects. Generally speaking, the emphasis in the music is on either communicating feelings of angst and hostility, or motivating a crowd to move with the beatideally, both at once.

Bass guitar

The speed and skill of a bassist in traditional heavy metal plays a large role in the band's sound, complementing percussive tempos (and occasionally the guitar riffs) and adding strong rhythmic pulse to the band. Nu metal bass parts are often reminiscent of hip hop or funk grooves, and in some songs, slap bass technique is used to give the music a funk groove. The bass in nu metal is often the driving force behind the music, which can be heard in bands such as Mudvayne.

Next time, try an octave pedal on your bass (bump it up an octave) and play lots of super-distorted power chords. It'll sound just like a nu-metal guitar! :D

Next time? I was amazed the members of Kansas didn't sue me for defamation of character this time (as well as Linkin Park for copyright violations)!

I was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting nu-metal to sound a lot harder to listen to for an old codger like me. The whispering was a neat idea.

I used highly sofisitkated equipment for the sangin part. I sang into a set of headphones because I didn't own a mic at the time. :D And it was a contest to make the worst MP3 so "pleasantly surprised" means I failed. :(

.

And if a nu-metal fan hated it then you'd know you succeeded.

I'm sure they did, thank you for those kind words. :)
