1. It can happen, but they'll need a little help. Doors drummer John Densmore talks about Jim Morrison's talent (48sec): [video:youtube]https://youtu.be/JrMi3jt9EeI
2. I have looked at both the XR18 and X32 Rack. One nice thing about the XR18 is that all connections are on the front so it can put on the floor like a snake stage box. However recording requires a USB capture device. Could both control and audio capture be done with a single laptop? I have no idea what processing power is needed to simply record. I wonder if a Raspberry Pi 3+ or 4 could do it. One nice thing about the X32 Rack is that it has a display that could be used as a backup in case someone steps on the controlling iPad. You wouldn't really need to bring a laptop for backup, though I suppose one could struggle by with a phone or something. Also, the X32 Rack manual says it records two channels direct to a USB flash drive, so no an X-live card is required apparently to record multiple channels. However, because it has all the connections on the back, it can't be used like a snake stage box. Rather it would be mounted in a rack. It would be a more like a traditional mixer, though without a surface. Still, the ease of recording has some appeal when the X-live card is added. Edit: Corrections in red. I should have read the manual more closely on recording capability and believed information posted by a user.
3. I got it back today. It was not repaired. It does exactly the same thing it did when I sent it off two months ago. Apologies for the link to Soundcloud. I seldom use it. I don't know how to stop it from playing other tracks in the channel. Ventilator ticking test
4. The last time I recorded direct from the board was using an Allen & Heath Qu-16 digital mixer. It recorded directly to an external hard disk via USB. It controlled the start/stop etc. I then copied the resulting multi-channel wav files into Reaper for editing. I no longer have the Qu-16 so I'm looking for another solution. I'm looking at buying the Behringer XR18 for live mixing, but only if I can successfully record the raw 18 channels. I have only just started studying the user manual, but it uses USB for audio transfer and requires installation of a multi-channel windows ASIO driver. I presume, and am willing to be wrong, that I will need a laptop and a DAW (probably Reaper), to record sets. Done anyone have any experience doing this with this box? Are there any pitfalls, experiences of disaster? Or on the other hand, has it worked flawlessly and with excellent results? The reality is probably somewhere in-between I expect. Thanks in advance. -- bradley
5. They sent it back to Neo Instruments. Maybe two months is not abnormal.
6. It has been in repair for over six weeks with no status update. Maybe that's normal. I pinged Sweetwater a couple of times. They have "escalated the issue with management". That was a week ago. As it turns out, I prefer the Leslie on stage (no surprise there). If and when I get the Vent back, I'll reserve it for gigs with stairs or for feeds to FOH.
7. About 10 years ago I digitized several hours of recordings my father had made in the 60s. He died in '66. He liked to record himself singing traditional songs and playing his J-45. He used a Wollensak T-524. It was a budget machine that came with a pretty crappy hand-held microphone which he would lay on the table or bed. If you are intent on doing this yourself, do not use the Wollensak. Your recordings will be altered by the defects it has accumulated over the years. Rather, see if you can borrow a high quality machine with adjustable heads. The playback head can be tweaked to get the best audio. Another option might be to try a local college with an audio production program, or a college radio station. They might be willing to do the transfer for you. I don't recall what I used to digitize the audio. It might have been a Focusrite Scarlett or maybe even a PC sound card. In my case, the recordings were so full of hum, buzz and other artifacts that it hardly mattered. Edit: I used an Edirol R-09. At time I used a software called Cool Edit Pro to clean it up and apply some EQ, but primarily it was to get rid of huge amounts of 60 cycle hum and its harmonics. Today, I would load the wav files into Reaper or some other DAW to do the cleanup. There are many more processing tools available then I had then. In fact, I still have the digitized masters and may do just that. BTW, it was this one:
8. Anyone actually get one repaired by Neo Inst? What has been your experience as to how long it takes? Edit: (I have had one in for six weeks and haven't heard a thing. )
9. Firefox and Chrome Does anyone else but me have a scrollbar on the bottom of every page of the forum? (except http://www.musicplayer.com/) There is nothing on the right side to scroll to. In the last line in the following snippet, the scrollbar can be removed with either [font:Courier New]width:99% or [font:Courier New]padding:0px, or just deleting the padding setting. With the padding, I think this div element is larger than 100%, thus the horizontal scrollbar. This is located in the first 50-60 lines or so, immediately following the section.
10. I searched and got a hit on another forum running UBBthreads. There may be a setting, enabled by a user preference, that puts a column on the right side of the display. Based on what is written there, I suppose that Shout Box(ed) text will show up in it. We do not have that preference currently. See this.
11. I prefer dark themes for forums, code editors and the like so I've been fiddling around with a dark style for the forum using a CSS script. I used the dark Talkbass style as an example. The style gets installed with a browser extension called Stylus. The example below is in Firefox. I am an amateur with CSS. Much of the forum content is hard-coded into HTML table cells without CSS selectors, things like images and such. Without selectors their modification with straight CSS is fiddly. There is a great deal more that could be done to it but I much prefer it as-is to the stock appearance.
12. To reduce the vertical space consumed by short postings, I find that it is better to turn avatars ON because most avatars are smaller than the default. Feel free to use my 1x1 pixel avatar.
13. I prefer no avatars. It fits more postings on the screen. However, when avatars are turned off in preferences, all postings sport a 140px by 140px blank avatar with a letter in it corresponding to the first letter of the posters handle. Is there a way to make avatars truly disappear when "no" is selected?
14. Does the chop have a tube preamp or a trek II?
15. You can type the url into outline.com. It sometimes works. https://outline.com/dud26Y
16. I build and repair tube amps from time to time and have been lucky so far, one hand in the pocket and all that. However, when I was young I was swimming in a friend's pools that had a leaky underwater 115VAC lamp. Someone turned it while I was treading water nearby. That was interesting.
17. I'm okay with the instruments. It might be that the examples of the style they are often associated that become boring. Banjo - the first Bela Fleck I heard was Chick Corea's "Spain". Pedal Steel - the first version of Sonny Rollins' "Oleo" I heard was on a Buddy Emmons album. Accordian - not a fan of Myron Floren. I do like some Cajun though. And for more fun, there is always parody blue grass.
18. Aww. One of my heroes and one that I never try to copy. Duke Elegant is on the band's break song list. Queueing up some Caravan, maybe I'm Gonna Go Fishin'.
19. Hammond female 6-pin connectors are probably okay for a fixed installation. For a gigging situation they eventually loosen up and have to be replaced (no fun). I bought 5-pin versions of these EP series Amphenol loudspeaker connectors. The solder cups can hold 12 ga wire, are rated 200V at 20A. Both male and female versions are available from Mouser. EP-5-12 and EP-5-13P are the 5-pin versions of these. http://www.amphenolaudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/ep-3-12.jpg http://www.amphenolaudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/ep-3-13p.jpg
20. There was a posting to the old zk3 Hammond mailing list in 1995 by one Perry Hemus that addressed both the smell and the sound. He was asking about whether he could get a decent Hammond sound out of an M-100 when driven through a "lesley". His posting included this line [ed. changes mine]: This line started a thread on its own. I even quoted it in my mail sig at one point (with attribution of course ).
21. I bought it in Dec. '18, open box from Sweetwater. It has a problem on the low sensitivity setting, used for high-level instruments like my C2D. Once the level gets to about 100 mVRMS, a periodic ticking is heard in the audio that increases in intensity as the drive is increased. I have been using it on high sensitivity (guitars), which is okay, but requires me to keep the output level from the Nord set low to prevent overload and distortion. Coincidentally, the overload point (and LED illumination) on high-sensitivity also occurs at around 100 mVRMS. Since I started using it, I have been using it with two DXR10s on a fork. While it's out for repair, I'll be using (and hauling) what it replaced, a modified 122. In some ways an easier schlep. I was in conversation with Neo Instruments about it (Guido Kirsch), who said he hadn't heard of that problem before. I sent him some wav files. He replied that it sounded like it needed repair or exchange, so back it goes. I hope it doesn't take too long. I sort of like it.
22. Thanks for this. I have been pondering getting iFretless. I have an iPad Air and have been looking for a useful set of bass samples as an alternative to the rompler I have been using for live gigs.
23. Today I rediscovered my Don Grolnick Complete Blue Note Recordings. Fond memories. [video:youtube]
