  1. "Mister Magic" by Grover Washington Jr" I think came out earlier than Breezin. And Spyro Gyro was around in 1974.
  2. A few turning points stand out. When I was 10-11, I was listening to Pink Floyd, Yes, ELP, and Steely Dan. Somehow, I got turned on to Return to Forever's Romantic Warrior. I decided to get other Return to Forever albums, so was led to the radically-different Light as a Feather. The next seminal album - not sure how I made this transition - was Milestones, by Miles Davis. I was 13 at the time, and straight-ahead jazz has remained my favorite music to listen to since then. Incidentally, I remember reading once that our musical tastes - meaning our favorite music - tends to be kind of settled by the time we turn 14 years old. Not to say that we don't expand our horizons, but that our genuinely favorite is often picked by that age. In my case, this is pretty accurate/
  3. One thing this thread has made clear to me is that my first step should be organizing the boxes of photos I have. Whatever I do down the line, this step seems necessary. At this point I don't even know the number of photos I'm dealing with or the scope of the job.
  4. Now that you mention it, I could see it being a little tricky dealing with the lighting and reflections. I guess I'd need a room that had pretty good natural lighting, since lamps/overhead lights might all tend to create some kind of reflection. I suppose I'll give it a shot.
  5. Do I understand correctly that a reasonable approach would be for me just to use my iphone 12 to take photos of each pic? This would certainly seem faster than using my scanner. What's the downside?
  6. For me, I'm not particularly worried about quality (thought maybe I should). I assume the quality is good enough whether I do it myself, or pay someone else. And in either case, I also assume some types of correction can be applied later. Big issues I'm grappling with are: (1) cost; and (2) time. Really unsure how much time I'd really be saving by outsourcing the job.
  7. After years of postponing this task, I've decided it's time to digitize the boxes of old photos we have lying around the house. I suspect the photos number in the hundreds, rather than thousands. Anyone have an opinion/advice about how to proceed? I own a multi-function printer that can scan, but it's not designed specifically for photos. I guess the basic question, therefore, is whether to buy a scanner more suitable for that purpose or out-source the job to some company. I'm guessing that it might actually be cheaper to buy a scanner and do it all myself, but I imagine that would be much more time-consuming. On the other hand, perhaps the type of sorting I would need to do before sending photos somewhere for scanning would also be very time-consuming. Whichever method I choose, I guess it's inevitable that I'd want to label and organize everything. Suggestions?
  8. Speaking of overkill, how about the ASUS Zenbook 17 Fold OLED. Here is the website: https://www.asus.com/Laptops/For-Home/Zenbook/Zenbook-17-Fold-OLED-UX9702/ I don't think it's available yet, and I imagine it will be extremely expensive. But looks pretty cool. Here is a video review. Note the reviewer says that Apple is rumored to be working on a 20" folding screen device.
  9. Picked my user name here as an homage to one of my favorite musicians: Cedar Walton. I've done this at other forums with other favorites.
  10. Is there any notable difference between these items in terms of transportability? In other words, does one get flatter/smaller when you break it down?
  11. Just came across this item as a possibility: https://www.amazon.com/Stage-KSB6500-Keyboard-Stand-Bag/dp/B002RC9QOK
  12. For most gigs, I transport a tabletop style keyboard stand and x-type keyboard bench. Both collapse into relatively flat positions and can be easily carried. But it would be nice to have a single bag that could contain both. Does anyone have any suggestions for such a bag?
  13. Good advice in this thread. By the way, one reason for the question wasn't just to deal with Uncle Sal's niece, but also in anticipation of a group of nieces who want to sing together. In that event, it is particularly helpful to understand what ranges are most common.
  14. That's interesting. I would have guessed that the range for the average man would have started and finished a bit higher. But that's why I asked.
  15. This is what I was looking for, thanks.
  16. Not a matter of transposing to a key that a singer requests. I'm talking about the situation where someone (or group) asks you to play a tune they can sing, and I have no information either as to what key the song is normally played in or any information about the particular singers. So I have no choice but to select the key myself and make a guess what is best.
  17. Occasionally when asked to play at a private gig - like a wedding - I'm told that one or more people might want to sing to a particular tune. And this leads me to wonder whether I should default to a particular key or aim to have the melody sung in a particular range. What do you guys do in this situation? What range would be safest to pick as a general rule, to accommodate non-professional singers?
  18. That sounds good to me (and I am shopping for a bench for gigs). Can you recommend a particular bench with a backrest?
  19. I've got a cocktail hour/piano trio gig tomorrow, and was asked to play some "New Orleans/Mardi Gras" material. Anyone have song suggestions for me? I don't think anyone will actually be listening, but it would be nice to have a modest list of tunes that are at least vaguely associated with New Orleans (and that can be played by piano trio). Off the top of my head, all I can think of are songs associated with Louis Armstrong.
  20. My first Mojo was a used one. I was either the second or third owner. Eventually, I experienced a problem where the sound would simply disappear, requiring me to reboot. I speculated that static discharge was somehow an issue. (I guess my speculation was just based on the sounds that the Mojo made when starting.) Eventually, I got Crumar to send me some instructions/parts to do a repair. Ultimately, I was unable to accomplish the repair (and frankly I don't even remember what it involved). After that experience, I decided to buy a new Mojo. Fast forward a couple of years: I give the old, non-working Mojo to a local wine shop, where I perform with an organ group. I told the owner he can keep my old Mojo if he gets it fixed (thereby giving me a place to play without having to move my current gear). He actually shipped it back to Italy. Crumar repaired it and now it seems to be working. Bottom line: I'm not the least surprised to hear of a static discharge issue. But I hoped that the problem was limited to earlier models. My current Mojo (like 3 years old) has been fine. Oh my last comment on the topic: I also thought that some people believed the problem was related to the older Mojos having an external power supply. Don't know if that's proved to be true.
  21. Just downloaded the free version. I'm intrigued to play around with this. I can think of one time this tool might have come in handy. I was playing a wedding, and got a request to accompany someone on a tune I didn't know (and without any chart to read). With a recording to load, it seems that this tool might have enabled me to generate a quick chord-only chart (though I guess that requires the paid version).
  22. After years of lusting after a vintage Hammond and Leslie -- having only owned a Mojo and non-Leslie amps - I finally found the cure to stop longing for those things: Hurricane Ida. After Ida caused considerable damage to my music room and other parts of the house, I was permanently cured of wanting any gear that I cannot move to safety by myself, and with little notice. When Ida was bearing down, I managed to move all of my gear (with one exception) to an upstairs part of the house, saving most of the gear. The one object I didn't move was my grand piano, which fortunately wasn't damaged (because the water never got high enough to do so). But the experience really stopped me from browsing through classifieds in search of great deals for gear that I don't absolutely need, and would have difficulty moving on a moment's notice.
  23. I just hope that our personalities haven't been changed too.
